Good cast.

Nicholas Hoult going for round two on Dracula flicks (Renfield with Cage was pretty fun).

Willem Dafoe keeping busy.

So in. Wonder if they will recreate the rising scene. One of the all time moments in horror movie history.

I can't watch this or the original because the damn episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark as a kid on Nickelodeon scarred me for fucking life.

If you can watch Texas Football after the late-era Mack Brown/Charlie Strong/Tom Herman you'll be fine.

Don’t typically have the stomach for horror but oddly enough I’m a sucker for vampire movies.

Anyone seeing this tonight/this week?  Going to try and hit it up on Friday.

I have tickets for Thursday. Eggers may be the only new director out there worth a shit.

Going on NYE. Super psyched. The witch is a masterpiece straight up. Lighthouse and Northman both very creative if a bit flawed. This source material seems create for what Eggers does well. Can’t wait.

Ive been to a couple screening of the original with a live orchestra. Really cool experience

I saw it tonight. The movie was really good, if a little slow moving in parts. The acting was top notch, and the visuals, well Eggers is absolutely top notch at those. Definitely worth the price of a ticket.

Saw it with my nephew last night…it’s really good you won’t regret seeing it in the theater…gothic horror at its best

Going tonight. Pumped.

I’ve always heard a wide range of opinions on that movie.  I never saw it, myself.

Going today. In the “The Witch is a masterpiece” camp.

My thoughts exactly. I'd add that Lily Rose was fantastic. I'd be surprised if she doesn't pick up an Oscar nod in a few weeks.

I liked it a lot. Dragged a bit at times, but I can’t think of anything that could be cut out that wouldn’t affect the storyline

Agreed.  She was outstanding.

It's fine. I like Northman better. But I may need to rewatch The Witch. I haven't seen The Lighthouse. Owe it a watch.

Saw (thread title) this afternoon. Fun watch but nothing super special. Well worth the ticket which is a lot more than most films can say these days. Eggers is stupid talented overall but I felt like certain scenes or stretches were much better than others and the plot got a little muddy. His world-building - especially at a micro level - and ability to immerse you in a magically-realistic period/setting continues to impress.

Dafoe and Hoult fucking crushed it. I thought little Depp was good but she isn't ATJ (which isn't an insult). Screenplay was really impressive.

It's EXCEEDINGLY fucking graphic - in case anyone's 11 year old-daughter is trying to tag along. Much more adult than even The Northman.

Based on the previews and opening credits I thought it was going to be black and white. Mostly dull shades of gray and brown though which is pretty much black and white. Then there's the scene in which the Harding's daughters are introduced. Looked like Willie Wonka compared to the rest of the movie. Thought that was interesting.

Also really dug Dafoe's pipe. Gotta get one of those bad boys

Am I the one that didn’t realized how close to Bram Stokers Dracula it is? Basically the same plot. Story behind it is interesting.

Checking this out in 30, pumped

The original was a Stoker adaptation without the rights so they changed the names.

And apparently Stoker's heirs sued for copyright infringement and won and most copies of the original were destroyed.

I really liked this. It’s not built for a modern audience with it being a slow burn but tension is through the roof at all times.

I really liked that his look was based on the painting of Vlad the Impaler.

Imagine living in 2024 and not knowing that Nosferatu was a ripoff of Dracula.

Fantastic movie, lead actress was outstanding and really loved the visuals in the movie DOP deserves a lot of credit for that.

Spoiler

Holy shit scene for me was the blood sucking on Thomas at the castle… gulp, gulp, gulp.

The Lighthouse is definitely the weirdest of the three. It's in black and white and has almost a fantasy vibe in some places. But Dafoe and Pattinson are incredible together. I'm glad Pattinson suffered through the Twilight movies to build up the name recognition that got him into great movies, or at least, movies where he can be great even if the rest of the plot doesn't quite work.

Going to see with my 16-yo today but he and I have seen loads of horror together, so I'll just give him a heads up.

We thought it was okay. Nothing special. The wife would rather just rewatch Dracula.

Eggers is definitely who I think of when I think "atmospheric" these days. He absolutely nails the gothic horror vibe. The acting is superb. All that said, it moved a bit slowly for me (it's very rare that a horror movie should go past 1.5 hours, IMO) and I have questions about the plot. I've never seen the original and maybe that's why?

Spoiler

Why was Orlock obsessed with Ellen in the first place? He's in Transylvania and she (presumably) was in England as a child when he first found her. They never met in person until the end, right?

Was the intent behind sending Thomas to the castle just to kill him, or to get him to sign some contract giving Orlock his wife?

Am I understanding the ending correctly in that her plan was to distract him with sex until the sun rose and the light hit him, knowing that he would drain her in the process?

Spoiler

1. I believe at the beginning of the movie depicting her as a younger woman, she had cried out for someone to love her, and he answered the call.

2. The estate deed ploy was a ruse to get him to sign some occult legal document giving up his marital rights to her.

3. Yes. And Defoe’s character know it which is why he went to the tomb in order to distract Thomas from saving her.

Is “atmospheric” the new way to say “slow and boring as fuck”?

Lol. Pussy is truly undefeated.

May be in the minority but I never felt it dragged or was slow and boring, thought it did a great job building tension throughout.

man, me either...i didn't think it dragged at all. i was enthralled from the first scene and thought it moved at a really good pace with no extraneous scenes. so grotesque lol. really, really liked it.

Aesthetically it was great. Felt like a throwback horror film. Not necessarily as scary as I thought it would be. Very much in the vein of Coppola's Dracula. Lily Depp Rose was really good as was Nicholas Hoult. I thought Aaron Taylor Johnson was miscast. He can't carry the same weight as the others.

I did too. It didn’t drag at all to me. What a great film. Depp’s scenes of possession were incredibly well done.

I could see that. Also his character was just kind of a douchebag as written.

I had the same thought about ATJ. He’s usually really good but not here. Also, for a Brit, his British accent sounds fake.

I agree with all of this. I really enjoyed it overall. Would have liked to have “seen” more of Count Orlock especially early in the movie. I thought this was Eggers 2nd best movie. The final act was pretty incredible imo.

We liked it. The sexual tension was more pronounced than the original for sure. Would give it a half star less than the original. I still need to see the Werner Herzog version.

Bill Skarsgard deserves some acclaim for dropping his octave down a few notes to perfect the Count Orlock voice. He was great and any portion with him was incredibly creepy and filled with dread.

Agree, very distinctive portrayal of a character that’s been done dozens of times over the years.  What you might think a medieval Magyar noble would look and sound like if he was undead.  Similar to the aesthetic of Gary Oldman in Coppola’s version, but more decrepit and corpse-like.  Skarsgard is even less recognizable in this get up than he was as Pennywise.

Overall, I’m in the “good not great” camp as a total movie. Worth seeing if you like the original Dracula story.

I will say I think one disappointment for me was not getting any recreation/reimagining of the “rising” scene from the original. That’s an all time important horror shot and I would have liked to see some sort of modern interpretation of it.

Felt like the reimagined version had less rising but more cock.
