New blackmail scam: Pay $8,600 or we’ll send your family video of you watching porn

by Tim Barber/ABC7
Friday, July 27th 2018

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (ABC7) — Police are warning about a new online blackmail scam trying to force you into giving up your money.

It all starts with an email that includes “your password” front and center.

The criminals give you two options: “…turn a deaf ear to this e-mail…” or “…or pay me $8,600…”

If you don’t pay, the criminals threaten to send a video of you watching porn to your friends, family, and co-workers.

Prince William County Police say it’s a scam sweeping the nation. And there’s a third option.

“If you get an e-mail like this, don’t open any attachments,” says Officer Nathan Probus. “We would encourage, if they see them, to delete them.”

These scams often have the same fake script with just one bit of personal information at the top, which they switch out for each victim. In some cases, they stole the person’s old password.

The latest scam has a new twist. The criminals write: “You’ll make the payment by Bitcoin (if you do not know this, just type “how to purchase bitcoin” in Google).”

The potential victim only gets one day to make the payment.

Just watching porn?

I know that's fake...

Neither my family nor my employers would be surprised to learn I masturbate to pornography.

How often is the real threat.

I actually got this email. Thought it was a nice change to the usual old crap. Bravo, Nigerian scammers.

So where does this supposed video come from?  Did they install a camera in my house?  Did they hack the webcam on my computer?  Drone from outside?

That's not a denial.

I’ve gotten several of these. The thing that was concerning is that they actually did have a password of mine (since changed of course).

They can put a picture of my O face on a billboard for all I care.  I'm proud of it.

One of my employees got a similar email. It was from someone that said they hacked his phone on his camera and had video of him beating it to porn. They wanted $300 or they were going to send it to his work email list. The way it was worded was very specific, so it freaked him out. He ended up quitting over it although nothing came of it.

It's always interesting when elements of Black Mirror translate into real life:

Wonder how they priced the ransom at $8,600?

It's 1 bitcoin

Challenge accepted.

What if I constantly masturbate in front of family, friends and co workers already?  Cool.  Free shit.

"Watch" porn? I "watch" football, meaning I just passively stare at the screen.

I participate in porn.

Used Pirate Ships run around $8500 each, as a currency standard.

Kinda reminds me of this:

Weird amount to ask for...

Haha, my wife told me this morning that she got one of these, so that's when I knew it was a scam and put a stop payment on the money order I had just sent.

I got shook down for about the same thing before.  $52,000 at each pickup...twice per year.  Yet somehow the blackmailers rounded it up to $105,000 per year. .

Fucking maths.  The film quality was decent enough for the time though, considering what we were all up to.  Then they wanted my car.  Because the cassette player was awesome.

2457 multiplied by 3.50 and then rounded up.

Who the hell knew Louis C.K. posts on Surly?

Jokes on them.  My porn LT is a burner. In the age of chrome why not keep 2 laptops?

LIkely a mistake. Probably meant 10k dollars. One dollar is approx .86 Euro.

1.  Take your burner LP and open every nefarious looking attachment in your spam box.

2.  Put every White House, Congressional, government and news related email address on your contacts list.

3. Put on a Trump mask, and vigorously beat off to every video under the categories of ‘Ivanka’ and ‘Cucked by Putin’

4.  Make sure to use your ‘small’ hand and don’t forget to hold a Big Mac in free hand.

5. Profit.

This actually might be a good way to get dates. All I have to do is pay them $8,600 and they’ll send the video for me?

Wait, I was supposed to be eating Big Macs?

I got it too. Except they wanted $3k. My favorite part was the threat that they’ll send the video to 10 friends if I didn’t respond within 24 hours. Hah! Good luck, I don’t have 10 friends. Suckers.
