Same. That was a first for me (getting the alert before feeling the shaking).

How much notice did it give you? Seconds? Minute(s)?

Few seconds. About 70 miles from epicenter

So just long enough to wonder what they fuck is about to happen.

But that is better than all of a sudden getting knocked on your ass.

Heard the alarms, but didn't feel the earthquake, which is strange since most people did. Maybe I mistook the earthquake with my kinda wobbly standing desk.

I'm in the OC about 80 miles as the crow flies.

yep.

I was living in Dana Point when there was a tsunami.  It took the bait dock out of commission for months.

its a pretty unpopulated part of Russia, so if it only is the EQ, then it sucks but damage should be limited to the area.    if its made a tsunami... shit is could get real along the entire west coast in about 9 hours.

Yeah, understood. I did not say massive russian loss of life, I said someone is getting fucked.

Wonder if there are implications for Northern Japan.

the fact that the quake was shallow is pretty scary news. Hope everyone heeds all the warnings and gets to higher ground. Watch became a warning now so not great news. Damn.

Fuck.

you can track the aftershocks here - the first on was 6.9, about 35 minutes after the initial 8.7, they are getting smaller and closer togetherScreenshot2025-07-29205959.thumb.jpg.c7eaba045d7508024d20f8dc0ea76772.jpg

Source? The embassy is evacuating or telling Americans to evacuate?

Had two warnings in the last hour for a possible/probable tsunami that would hit Hanalei over on Kauai around 7:10 HST.

Sorry was watching CNN. Just paraphrasing what they were saying.

Something told me not to head to the beach today on the North Shore. It’s what I usually do on a day off.

He's more than 4,000 miles away.  I doubt it.

This dude is showing various streams.  Now measured as 8.8.

I've got the SUV loaded with water and food and other essentials ready to go to higher ground if need be.

I get it that there's still 3+ hours until it gets there, but why wait and risk the roads being jammed pack?

Good to see you two check-in. I am going up to higher ground at Pearl Ridge. I live down near the old Dole Cannery and I see how it gets there just for heavy storms, much less this.

Will any of the water make it into Lake Travis?

So fucking greedy. Yall are good for a minute.

Fair point. I have two older neighbors I'm going to check in on to join me.

Yes. Regardless of any weather events, Katy should be evacuated. Permanently.
