Yes I could go for a nice 12 pack of Diet Coke right about now @Orale

July 30Jul 30 Just got the 30 minute siren warning. I was parked alone up on this section of highway when I got here at 4:30. Now there's probably 50 cars parked up here.
July 30Jul 30 Popular Post Just got home from Padres game where we struck up a convo with a bunch of people from the Midwest out here for a conference. They asked “Are you worried about the tsunami? Should we be worried?” ”I’m not concerned. While we are close to the coast, we are up on a ridge. Where you staying?” ”Lowes Coronado.” ”What floor?” ”Second.” ”You’re probably fucked.”

July 30Jul 30 What makes this worse, and has everyone in Japan, Hawaii, and the US west coast worried for more waves from even this point, is the 8.8 magnitude quake had two 8.0 aftershocks (at least), etc. I always remember that Crescent City, California, is famous for magnifying any tsunami waves that can reach it -- which wasn't lost on me last time I was there eating a nice steak at a local restaurant, at night. I drove through Crescent City in October 2020 and they already had Trump 2024 signs out. So, fingers crossed.

July 30Jul 30 Nada here on Maui. Hope it was all for naught. Getting drunk on a sixth floor balcony with some friends so can’t complain
July 30Jul 30 Popular Post So far, so good. The early warning and preparedness of Hawaiians for stuff like this is impressive. When I say it is genuinely cool to see residents of a state trust and listen to the government on things like this it is legitimately refreshing. More states could stand to be this organized and working as a team to help its citizens.

July 30Jul 30 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/live-blog/rcna221881 Looks like it fizzled. Hawaii was downgraded to an advisory and folks were told they could return home. Cali got waves and less than a foot in most places so far. all the cams linked on page one show business as usual. Thankfully. Edited July 30Jul 30 by SydneyCarton
July 30Jul 30 Yep. Returned home to Kihei and very thankful. My wife and I + everyone I was around at the grocery store about 2 hours before first wave were strangely calm during the whole thing which made me feel that everything would be ok. That was not at all how either of us or the island felt in the moments leading up to the Lahaina fire. Energy is interesting out here sometimes. Mahalos.

I walked the three miles or so from Pearl Ridge over to the Wal-Mart (only place open to pick up a few things) before getting an Uber back home as the bus system was not up and running again yet. Honest to God if this was out on Long Island I feel like some Italian guys would’ve done something dumb in this situation. Were it Texas and the Gulf of Mexico I think someone may have yelled out “Hold my Lone Star!” and done something even dumber.

July 30Jul 30 seems like that fault is still tremoring (and apparently some small tremor out in Stanton)
July 30Jul 30 So other than the run of TP, it seems the HI tsunami was a bust thankfully? No Gojhira or anything?
July 30Jul 30 Which obviously means that everyone will disregard the next tsunami warning…..and will drown.

July 30Jul 30 yeah nothing like an earthquake and a volcano eruption for the win. Just wait until the USGS changes its updates on Mt Rainier. all of the seismologists I follow believe that an eruption for Mt Rainieris fairly imminent (weeks away kind of thing or less) all these swarms the past two months are building up to something.

It was my first time in six plus years living here facing a serious potential damaging event. It was good practice figuring out what to load into the car and where to go. A dress rehearsal of sorts for something more serious. I realized I didn't have a real plan in place for something like this which is dumb when living on an isolated island.
