I want to believe him but sometimes players have blind spots. He also thinks Broughton is breaking out this year. The most interesting thing he has said is it’s some players that really want to start Barron and Williams at safety. That’s where my transfer questions start. Says those two with JG at nickel would be the best lineup but doesn’t think the coaches will do it. Thanks for the info I'll post again that people shouldn't fret over the starters in the secondary since the 2nd string plays almost as much as the first, unless the defensive philosophy has changed with Nansen coming in

August 9, 20241 yr Nobody seems to be concerned about it but Justin Wells did note that Wisner did have to go to the hospital for "precautionary dehydration issues".

August 9, 20241 yr A couple of names Burton mentioned this morning as possibilities to cross-train at RB: TyAnthony Smith and Derion Gullette. Gullette is about 6'3" 240 so that might be fun to watch.

Starting to wonder if that baseball catcher is our version of Littlefinger. He joined the team two weeks ago and has already moved up two spots on the depth chart.

August 9, 20241 yr Popular Post IT team notes Spoiler Anyway, I caught up with a couple sources after Thursday's practice and they were as high on the future of the Texas Longhorns as they were on the present. "The young kids are really good at football. Texas will be amazing the next three years," said one of the sources. Before we get to that, let's discuss what one said about Quinn Ewers. He stated they worked a lot of two-minute, end-of-half scenarios and mentioned Ewers' poise and experience rather than ability. Confidence within the program surrounds Ewers' mental readiness and command of the offense as much as his talent. Arch Manning got a nod here as well when he said "Quinn and Arch are both ready for the season right now." This is not pie in the sky if you recall our reporting of Ewers the past two offseasons. It's indisputable that Ewers is improved over last year. Another takeaway from a source is the starting D-tackles of Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton have been playing really well. I've had a few people ask so I checked, and yes, VB is playing the run better than ever. He'll never be Byron Murphy but he's piling people up at the point of attack in ways he hasn't before. A different source mentioned Edge play so in tandem we're hearing good things about the defensive line as a whole. The beauty of it, we know the 1st and 2nd team O-lines are good so zero-sum is not going to be the culprit if the reporting doesn't align with what we see on Saturdays. One thing I mentioned as a concern recently was depth at linebacker but I heard, unsolicited, "depth at linebacker is looking good." Behind Anthony Hill and David Gbenda Texas has Morice Blackwell, Liona Lefau, Ty'Anthony Smith, and Derion Gullette. We expect to see all of them this year. Smith has a 'different' buzz around him, one that foreshadows a great career. Back to those young players... the staff has LOVED the last two classes. Keep in mind, 14 were early enrollees in 2023 and 18 enrolled early in the last cycle. So, there's plenty of familiarity. The only concern with these last two classes is complacency or reading their own headlines but that's not likely to happen with the way culture is humming and given the young leadership potential we've heard about. Finally, the loss of CJ Baxter was a buzzkill throughout the program. CJ is a popular young man in the locker room. But, there is a ton of confidence in the two freshmen running backs.
August 9, 20241 yr I cant imagine theyd throw derrion there, but niblett would a great tool in the backfield. Also I dont really think Smith getting snaps at RB would be grear for his development.

August 9, 20241 yr I’m not suggesting we make him a feature back, but Bolden can pitch in 3-4 carries if we’re trying to keep Blue on a pitch count.
August 9, 20241 yr I can hardly believe it's really necessary to move guys out of position to RB, but as long as we're hypothesizing, Jelani McDonald was very good with the ball in his hands in high school.
August 9, 20241 yr It’s nice to see Colt and Ship’s son is all growed up. Glad to see something came out of them being “roommates” all those years
August 9, 20241 yr I don't think they're moving anyone to TB. That considered, there isn't currently a shortage of backs. There might be, arguably, with other injuries, a need for someone to get involved with short yardage situations. How do midgets like Bolden or Niblett help there? Niblett solves nothing at TB. Good lord.

August 9, 20241 yr I “heard” they might move Juan to more like a H-Back position, just to get him on the field. Run, catch, block, and receive. Kind of like the 49’ers Swiss Army knife.Hook’em!!!
August 9, 20241 yr Niblett makes sense if there’s an injury cluster at the position and you need bodies because it’s week 10 and you’re down several running backs. He got plenty of carries in high school so he’d at the very least be comfortable taking handoffs, and he’s dangerous with the ball in his hands. He also probably doesn’t hurt the two-deep like moving someone else would If you just need short yardage because Blue goes down, then sure there are better candidates

He doesnt make sense based on the need in the room. Texas has 2 Rbs that are very comfortable in space (Wisner/Blue). There are questions about their ability to run inside and block. Maybe more importantly their ability to stay healthy, if continually tasked with those responsibilities. If they are going to bring someone into the room, you would expect a more physical/bigger athlete. Sark will run a lot of screens and some jet motion as the extension of the run game with the WRs, so I am not sure he needs to move a fast and small WR over. Lets see how Clark and Gibson do over the next week or so.

No one needs to mention Blue... that's not the point of that statement. If there was little confidence in the two freshman backs being ready to get carries in a game, like at all, then losing CJ is a big big concern. They're saying the RB room is still solid despite losing Baxter.
August 9, 20241 yr The staff/team has tons of confidence in Blue. The real question is, after Wisner, are the true Freshmen really ready? They will get plenty of touches vs CSU, but the implementation of Juan, as a H-Back, might surprise most people.Hook’em!!!
