August 14, 20241 yr Baxter was never a killer inside the tackles. He went down with a breath of wind all last year. Try not to panic. Pass first and then gut the defense with draws from Blue and the other dudes. Hope Wingo is as dangerous as advertised. If so we will go deep into the playoffs.

He lined up as a back and played both very well before the backpack incident. That would be our answer. Not saying RT ran between tackles much, but if we have a guy like that in the WR depths, we should be fine with Blue, Gibson, TW and then spreading some carries to an athlete or two. If we were moving a WR, my first thought would be Bolden. He had 21 career carries at Oregon State. But I don't think we're moving a WR for reasons that have already been discussed here. Also, just for reference, here are the RB carries and distribution in Sark's time here. 2023: 444 RB carries (31.7 per game) Brooks 187, Baxter 138, Blue 65, Red 30, Robinson 12, Wisner 12 2022: 421 RB carries (32.4 per game) Robinson 258, Johnson 93, Brooks 30, Robinson 25, Blue 15 2021: 367 RB carries (31.6 per game) Robinson 195, Johnson 96, Robinson 45, Brooks 21, Watson 10 Average: 410.7 carries (31.6 per game) RB1 19.4 carries per game, RB2 8.8 per game, RB3 4.4 carries per game These are injury adjusted numbers (2021 Bijan had his carries across 10 games). Player carries per game do not add up to team carries per game for that reason. My takeaways: rushing attempts per game has been consistent over Sark's tenure. In a perfect world, we're looking at something like Blue 18 carries per game, Wisner 10, Gibson 4. We don't live in a perfect world though and the situation is more grim than I thought prior to doing this math. We can still overcome it with some injury luck, but we'll likely be counting on Gullette/Page/whoever to give us a minimum of 40 carries this year. Probably more like 60 and it could go over 100 if our top three guys miss more than a couple games. Especially if we have a 16 game season. Two subpackage/scheme things to watch: 1) Wildcat. Roschon and Red probably ran that 25+ times per year. I imagine that's probably dead now given that it's success was declining and we now don't have the body type for it. 2) Sark's use of motion. People like to call it the Keilan role, but it's flexible. It's just whichever athlete Sark has on the field that he can move around to get certain reads or calls from the defense. Keilan was the primary guy for it in 21/22 and Sark ran him with it more. Last year the improved WR core ate up his play time and the carries given to whoever was motioning declined, which was more in-line with what he did at Bama. I'd expect that to continue this year. August 14, 20241 yr What I hate the most about these RB injuries is that it will only further encourage Sark to be pass first. We lost the Washington game because he wouldn’t stick with the run. We need to be a run-first offense. And maybe y’all all have the confidence in Ewers to run a pass-first offense. I don’t. Too much inconsistency, too many poor decisions, and stretches of looking like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

And he’s our 3rd string RB. We may be down but Sark has fostered a culture where the next man up is just as good as the previous guy. The future is bright here. We’re nowhere near the Kai Money walk-on scenario we were under Herman.
August 14, 20241 yr Retaining Savion and giving him carries is preventing someone with RB talent from toting the rock. Blue and Wisner with a rotating cast behind them is a legit upper P4 backfield. But another injury would be a very big concern.

That is debatable, in my opinion, especially with the way Blue finished the year. I had high hopes that Baxter would live up to his hype, but he didn't last year, and Blue looked damn good to me after Brooks went down. Whatever, we will find out. Blue was notably better than Baxter by the end of last year. The idea is that Baxter really has more of an every down profile than Blue and could take a bigger step from Year 1 to Year 2. Moot now of course. Going to be really interesting to see what they cook up at RB. I am so glad the OL is where it is.

Savion Red is quite possibly the most overhyped, barely three-star, consensus #1414-rated recruit of all time. In a heated recruiting battle, Texas beat out Kansas, SMU, and Mississippi Valley State for his services. In two years with the Longhorns, Red totaled 131 rushing yards, more than half of which came against Texas Tech in the late 3rd and 4th quarters of a 57-7 blowout. After two seasons of ascent, Red managed to climb to 5th or 6th on the depth chart before transferring to Alabama Nevada where, reportedly, Red has been equally impressive and has been praised for his “moxie” and for “getting the defense riled up” during practice. This underwhelming list of achievements hasn’t kept half of Surly from ruing Red’s unfulfilled potential and devastating departure from the program. Even before the injuries to Baxter and Clark, these talent-evaluating cognoscenti would have gladly shipped off Jake Majors and Michael Taaffe to secure Red’s return. Taking injuries into account, they wouldn’t hesitate to throw in Hayden Conner.
