Those lists are always....interesting. I am shocked at how many guys I have never heard of. haha. I guarantee if this list is redone at the end of the year it will have Ryan Wingo and Jaydon Blue on it. They are gonna be monsters this year.

lol espns list of the top 100 is full of lol’s. Bond being in the 80’s. Ewers at 23 haha. There are plenty more laughs-enjoy https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/40683565/college-football-preseason-player-rank-top-100-travis-hunter-james-pearce

I wouldn’t say either of those are totally out of line. I’m not sure what to expect from Bond. I’d probably have Ewers a little higher.

Bond, agreed. Looks good on paper/vid, but Agiye looked decent, too. Ewers, looks good as well. If he quits side-arming shit five feet off the ground and goes a whole season  without getting squashed or trying to run over linebackers, he'll show higher.

We are creeping up to the beginning of the football season and everyone should be excited for that!

It feels like this week has flown by as well, as here we are at Thursday again. So for your Friday appetizer, here are a few team notes combined with some notable visitors expected in for the Texas-Georgia game October 19.

***

Team Notes

– I reported earlier in the week TE Juan Davis received some looks at the RB spot this week to help provide an option for the Texas coaching staff due to multiple season-long injuries sustained already through camp.

That remains the case, however it was Davis who initiated the move. I was told Davis voluntarily offered his services in the backfield and staff obliged. The selfless veteran on the roster is doing whatever he can to make an impact and contribute for this year's squad.

***

On the topic of running backs, I do not believe LB Derion Gullette to be a full-time swap to the offensive side of the ball. In fact, Gullette should be considered the more emergency back in the conversation given Niblett and Davis received run in the position, as has walk-on Colin Page.

The Insider: Texas Longhorns football nuggets galore at the midpoint of fall camp

In this week's edition of The Insider, we give you Texas Longhorns football nuggets galore at the midpoint of fall camp. Plus, a facilities update on Texas relocating the DKR press box to make room for suites.

FCB

Notes:

  • Given injuries, Sarkisian is likely to scale back full-contact periods in practice while opting instead for "thud" tempo
  • WRs: One source said after last Saturday's first scrimmage of fall camp that Alabama junior transfer Isaiah Bond "is clearly the No. 1 receiver."
  • Another source said the top three receivers after the scrimmage appeared to be Bond, Johntay Cook, and DeAndre Moore Jr.
  • Yet another source said, "I don't know how you keep Silas Bolden off the field."
  • Barron is working at CB so he can be on the field when the team needs better tackling, like against Michigan or situationally
  • "Liona is like the do-right player," Sarkisian said this week. "He's always spot on with what he's supposed to do, run fits, pass coverage, special teams. The thing that I've been impressed with him this year, as opposed to his true freshman year, I really feel like he's cutting it loose more.
  • Sources said Hill is moving around so much based on what new co-coordinator Johnny Nansen brought with him from Arizona and added to Pete Kwiatkowski's scheme for the linebackers that Hill was hardly ever in the middle in the first scrimmage of fall camp last Saturday." Ant Hill was mostly on the outside," a source said.
  • The source said sixth-year senior David Gbenda ended up in the middle when Hill moved to outside linebacker during the scrimmage.
  • DKR press box moving, being replaced with suites. Sources said once the press box is gutted, after the 2025 season, it will be replaced by 10 suites that have already been sold for $10 million apiece.
Spoiler

There's a lot to get to at the midpoint of fall camp, so let's dive right in.

— While sophomore running back CJ Baxter's season-ending knee injury occurred during a contact period (goal line drill), true freshman running back Christian Clark's torn Achilles was a non-contact injury. Clark suffered the injury while doing individual drills, sources said.

A team source said coach Steve Sarkisian is likely to scale back full-contact periods in practice while opting instead for "thud" tempo in which players square up to make tackles and wrap up instead of taking ball carriers to the ground.

— Sarkisian always says he wants players in a position battle to make the decision a difficult one for coaches about who gets on the field.

The wide receivers on this team, so far, are looking to take that request to the max.

A source said receivers coach Chris Jackson was asked if he likes his room. Jackson said, "Oh yeah! But we've got some [expletive] to figure out."

One source said after last Saturday's first scrimmage of fall camp that Alabama junior transfer Isaiah Bond "is clearly the No. 1 receiver." Another source said the top three receivers after the scrimmage appeared to be Bond, Johntay Cook and DeAndre Moore Jr.

Yet another source said, "I don't know how you keep Silas Bolden off the field."

And another source said, "Matthew Golden is probably having his best week of practice since he's been here."

— A college coach very familiar with Texas' personnel said, "It will be interesting to see if Sark tries to target one of these receivers the way he did with Xavier Worthy at times.

"I get that Sark wants to have the most explosive offense in college football," the coach said. "But there were so many times a guy like Jordan Whittington was open underneath, but the ball went to Worthy downfield in a contested situation and fell incomplete.

"Look at the connection rates in terms of targets and receptions for Jordan Whittington and Xavier Worthy. You'll see what I mean."

Sure enough, Worthy had a career catch rate of 58.5% (335 targets, 196 receptions) over the last three seasons. Whittington had a five-season catch rate of 74.1% (189 targets, 140 receptions), including a 74.5% catch rate in 2023 (55 targets, 41 receptions).

There's no doubt Sarkisian wants to push the ball down the field and loved Worthy's speed between the 20s to take shots. Worthy's catch rate last year of 63% (119 targets, 75 receptions) was far better than it was in 2022 of 52% (113 targets, 59 receptions).

A good chunk of those misfires in 2022 came in a 41-34 loss at Oklahoma State in which Quinn Ewers, who was 19-of-49 passing in that game, targeted Worthy 17 times and connected on four passes (for 78 yards and a touchdown). After that game, Sarkisian said he kept calling for Worthy to be targeted because of his explosive play capability.

The balance of talent in the wide receiver room right now, in addition to Ewers' maturity in the offense, likely means the catch rates are more likely to mirror the percentages posted by Worthy (63%), Adonai Mitchell (64% with 86 targets for 55 catches) and Whittington (74.5%) than in previous seasons.

Jordan Whittington spent five seasons in the Texas program. He's presumably battling with former Oklahoma WR Drake Stoops for a roster spot with the Los Angeles Rams.

— A quick side note on Whittington, a sixth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams who had six catches for 74 yards, including a 30-yarder, in the Rams' 13-12 preseason victory over the Dallas Cowboys last weekend:

Whittington, who is likely battling former Oklahoma wideout Drake Stoops for a roster spot, is in a receiver room with Pro Bowlers Cooper Kupp, a former third-round draft pick, and 2022 fifth-round draft pick Puka Nacua.

Whittington was mic'd up during the preseason game against the Cowboys and was seen getting repeated feedback from Kupp.

"I ain't never been in a receiver room like this," Whittington said. "Everybody's close and everybody cares."

— At the cornerback position, team sources say senior Gavin Holmes is playing his best football right now while competing with Jahdae Barron, San Jose State transfer Jay'Vion Cole and redshirt freshman Warren Roberson to replace departed starter Terrance Brooks (transferred to Illinois).

Gavin Holmes had a strong spring and has continued to perform at a high level on the practice field during fall camp. Holmes is in the mix to be a starting cornerback for the Longhorns.

"We're seeing the best version of Gavin Holmes so far in camp," Steve Sarkisian said recently.

Holmes (5-11, 185), who has 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash, was the second-highest-rated coverage defender for Texas last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Malik Muhammad was the team's highest-rated coverage defender last season at 79.9, followed by Holmes (78.7), who had 16 tackles and two pass breakups in 2023.

— One source close to the team said not to be surprised to see Barron playing some field cornerback against a run-first Michigan offense because Barron is such a good tackler in space.

Barron, who led the team in tackles for loss in 2022 with 11.5, forced a fumble in last Saturday's first scrimmage of fall camp after making a one-on-one tackle of Christian Clark in space in the red zone.

Barron was playing cornerback in the scrimmage.

Last year's starting cornerbacks — Brooks and Ryan Watts — were two of the best tacklers on the roster, according to Pro Football Focus, which gave Watts an 85.2 grade for tackling and Brooks a grade of 81.3.

Barron had a 70.1 tackling grade and a 76.5 run defense grade in 2023, according to PFF. Muhammad, the likely starter at boundary cornerback, had a PFF tackling grade of 66.4 and a run defense grade of 68.5 in 2023.

— Sophomore linebacker Liona Lefau had an impressive showing in Texas' first scrimmage of fall camp last Saturday, including two pass breakups in coverage.

Liona Lefau is expected to be a core special teamer for Texas in 2024. That being said, he's said to be coming along as a linebacker and could be on the field a lot more on defense than he was as a true freshman.

Lefau's development is critical for depth at middle linebacker. At some point, sophomore linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who will line up in the middle quite a bit this season, will need a break or be moved around, causing a void Lefau could fill.

"Liona is like the do-right player," Sarkisian said this week. "He's always spot on with what he's supposed to do, run fits, pass coverage, special teams. The thing that I've been impressed with him this year, as opposed to his true freshman year, I really feel like he's cutting it loose more.

"He's confident in knowing what he needs to do, and he's letting it go. In turn, I think he's around the ball more often than he was a year ago. So that's been impressive."

Here's what Texas doesn't want to happen: Hill playing as many snaps as last year's defensive snap leader Jaylan Ford, who played 797 snaps, including all 82 snaps against Oklahoma — his worst game of the season with a PFF grade of 31.3. (A PFF rating of 70.0 is considered above average).

"They didn't trust Anthony Hill enough at linebacker against Oklahoma to leave him on the field for more than 41 snaps," said a source close to the team. "Instead, they left Ford out there all game, exhausted. It ended up being one of Hill's best games of the year (PFF grade of 74.6). He should've played more."

— Sources said Hill is moving around so much based on what new co-coordinator Johnny Nansen brought with him from Arizona and added to Pete Kwiatkowski's scheme for the linebackers that Hill was hardly ever in the middle in the first scrimmage of fall camp last Saturday.

"Ant Hill was mostly on the outside," a source said.

The source said sixth-year senior David Gbenda ended up in the middle when Hill moved to outside linebacker during the scrimmage.

DKR MEDIA PRESS BOX TO BE RELOCATED, REPLACED BY SUITES

The University of Texas System Board of Regents has approved athletics to begin taking steps toward relocating Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium's media press box — currently located on the west side of the stadium — to split locations in the southeast and southwest corners of DKR in time for the 2026 football season.

Sources said once the press box is gutted, after the 2025 season, it will be replaced by 10 suites that have already been sold for $10 million apiece.

The press box would then be divided into two locations in the south end of DKR, where the concrete party decks in the southeast and southwest corners are currently located. UT's current press box is on the eighth floor of Bellmont Hall, located on the west side of DKR.

The 10 $10 million suites will be two stories. That means the kinesiology department, located on the seventh floor of Bellmont, is being relocacted to the second floor.

Yeah, being overly reliant on Worthy seemed to be a huge flaw of Quinn’s. I really hope he doesn’t do that again this year, especially with someone like Bond when we have so many legit WRs and TEs. That would go extremely poorly.

Hunter is an elite DB, but he gets the Champ Bailey/Charles Woodson bump for being a two way threat. Still an easy top 10 pick imo.

Once he doesn't have a dumb fuck head coach making him play every position he'll shine at DB in the league.

Is he?  I know that was the line of thinking, but I wasn't sure if his DB film backed that up.  I know the Colorado defense in general was pretty bad last year.  He doesn't look anything special at WR, not that he's bad, but he certainly isn't a top 10 pick at WR.

IT: Seven Texas true freshmen pups that are already biting in August camp

Spoiler

You likely know the Darrell Royal quote that’s some variation of, “if he’ll bite you as a dog, he’ll bite you as a pup.” The meaning is fairly self-explanatory, like Paul Wadlington’s lisp, if you have “it” early, you’ll likely have “it” later. We’ve seen this with young freshmen in the past. Names like Kenny Vaccaro, Malcom Brown, Xavier Worthy, Byron Murphy, Kelvin Banks, and Anthony Hill come to mind. Even Tre Wisner on special teams was biting as a pup.

There are a handful of freshmen from the 2024 class who are already biting in August camp.

We’ll start with the most obvious, Ryan Wingo:

WR Ryan Wingo
Wingo’s been a stud since the second he arrived on campus. Even before spring ball he excelled during winter offseason. Once spring began, he played up to his heightened expectations and that continues in August. Specifically, he and Arch Manning seem to have quite the connection in camp with reports consistently mentioning the duo.

Outside of the quarterbacks, Wingo’s NFL Draft upside is as high as anyone else’s in the program.

Edge Colin Simmons
Simmons hasn’t made as much noise as Wingo, or Anthony Hill the year before, but from a size, athleticism, and physicality standpoint, he clearly belongs. One thing standing in his way, currently, is Trey Moore but there’s a belief in the program he’ll play early and then more and more as the season progresses. So, he’s like Hill in that regard.

CB Kobe Black
Black has continually improved in his short time in Austin. Some assumed he was struggling due to giving up a very public long ball to Ryan Wingo in the spring game but file that one under [stuff] happens. Black’s size has caught bystanders by surprise and some still wonder if he’ll eventually move to safety if he gets bigger, but for now he’s getting better and better at boundary corner and the belief is he could play this year. Opportunity will certainly knock if Jahdae Barron plays both corner and Star and the staff wants to leave Malik Muhammad at field corner.

Given that size, some wondered how he’d fare against college receivers but August is showing he has what it takes to play corner.

RB Jerrick Gibson
Even before CJ Baxter‘s injury we were hearing Gibson would likely play this year even if it was on special teams. The fact he could play special teams as a freshman tells you that he can move, the coaches find him reliable, and he has the proper temperament. Now, with fellow freshman Christian Clark also injured, Gibson will be forced into action but there’s a good amount of confidence from the staff in his ability to be ready for the challenge.

We have been hearing good things about Gibson going back to the spring. Some of that was just about his maturity and readiness to contribute in some form or fashion. Now he’s going to have the chance to play a major role.

TE Jordan Washington
Tight end is in good shape with Gunnar Helm, a surging Juan Davis, and Alabama transfer Amari Niblack, but Jordan Washington has the most upside at the position. He’s been making plays as a receiver, including a 30-yard seam route recently. He also has the mindset to block. His route to playing time isn’t easy but he’ll earn snaps ahead of a Year 2 breakout.

LB Tyanthony Smith
Smith, the late Aggie flip, is the freshman defender I’ve heard the most about this August. He could always move and find the ball carrier but now he’s carrying “college” weight at 220 pounds while retaining his speed. With Morice Blackwell dinged up, he’s already played second team Will quite well. Expect him to be a fixture on coverage units before starting in 2025 alongside Anthony Hill (in his final year). Based on what we’re hearing about Smith, that will be a fantastic duo. Another offseason is going to do him wonders.

OL Nate Kibble
Kibble has a body type like DJ Campbell and the mindset and maturity of Kelvin Banks. He’s not the raw, powerful athlete that Campbell is but he possesses the wide base and feet at guard that makes it very hard for defensive tackles to go around or through him. While he doesn’t have a quick path to the field he has the look of a future starter. That’s truly impressive considering he was a late enrollee.

A player not making this list doesn’t mean anything for their future. Some have more competitive depth charts, longer developmental curves, etc. An example, is, both Wardell Mack and Santana Wilson look good but both need more physical development and they have a lot of experienced players in front of them. That doesn’t mean they can’t be great players, they just require more projection. The players above don’t require a lot of projection.
