August 5, 20241 yr I can't remember the last time a freshman was being hyped up by Bobby/Gerry the way Wingo is - I guess Kelvin Banks was pretty similar. I'm curious if Cook/Moore get the courtesy start against CSU because it sounds like a combination of Bond, Bolden, Wingo, along with Niblack, would be extremely difficult to defend.

I should hope that the era of courtesy starts is over. You bleed for the team, great, you have our thanks. But that should not get you playing time if someone else is better.

Yeah, Burton said this morning that he thinks Niblack gets drafted before Bond, or any of the other portal transfers. So getting buried behind Juan Davis seems... unlikely.

August 5, 20241 yr Popular Post Bobby Burton Administrators 2.2k Posted 3 hours ago I'm headed over to the University this morning for the media window that begins as 9am. Here's a quick what-we-learned from week one: - Silas Bolden will have a significant role in 2024. Expect Bolden to win the punt returners job and expect him to find a way into the rotation as a receiver. "Fearless" has been the way some have described the diminutive transfer receiver from Oregon State. - Ryan Wingo is better than advertised. He has continued his ascent and did not hit the freshman wall over the summer. - Trey Moore is making lots of plays. But he doesn't look like he should. He is clearly the smallest of the Texas edge players. - Texas is trying to manage the secondary to get their best 11 on the field. That means Jaylan Guilbeau has seen the majority of starting action at nickel with Jahdae Barron potentially filling a role opposite Manny Muhammad at one cornerback spot. - This has the makings of a really good transfer class. If I'm guessing who would be drafted first among the transfers, I'd maybe pick Amari Niblack at this point over Isaiah Bond. Niblack has looked like a major weapon early in camp. - The Texas WR room has the most depth I've ever witnessed during my time covering or following the Longhorns. - The Texas QB room is ridiculously talented. Go back ~10 years and my guess is Trey Owens would be pushing to start for Texas just like David Ash did. Yet now he's comfortably third string and can bide his time. - Gavin Holmes is not going to give up the starting corner spot to Jay'Vion Cole willingly. Holmes put in some real work this off-season and it shows. - Anthony Hill appears to be taking the next step as a leader and true middle linebacker. Multiple coaches are high on him and think he has not only the physical skills but the mental aptitude to pull off leading a defense. - Derrick Williams is poised for a big season. In fact, the entire Texas sophomore class looks like it could be one for the ages. They are that talented across the board. More after today's practice. Hope everyone has a good week!
August 5, 20241 yr Popular Post CJ Vogel Moderators 3k Moderators Posted 9 minutes ago I was hoping to get one of those hour-long media windows this Monday to get a lengthier look at the roster. Turns out we were back to special teams and about 20 minutes of availability. Luckily, there was plenty of notes from the session. *** Texas went straight into a mock team run/screen hurry up offense for all three quarterbacks – Ewers, Manning and Owens. A quick look at the 11-man roster on each side of the ball for those sessions. 1st Team Offense QB Quinn Ewers RB CJ Baxter WR DeAndre Moore WR Johntay Cook WR Isaiah Bond TE Gunnar Helm LT Kelvin Banks LG Hayden Conner C Jake Majors RG DJ Campbell RT Cam Williams 1st Team Defense EDGE Trey Moore DL Alfred Collins DL Vernon Broughton EDGE Barryn Sorrell LB Anthony Hill Jr. LB David Gbenda STAR Jaylon Guilbeau CB Gavin Holmes S Michael Taaffe S Jelani McDonald CB Malik Muhammad 2nd Team Offense QB Arch Manning RB Jaydon Blue WR Ryan Wingo WR Silas Bolden WR Matthew Golden TE Juan Davis LT Trevor Goosby LG Neto Umeozulu C Connor Robertson RG Cole Hutson RT Andre Cojoe 2nd Team Defense EDGE Ethan Burke DL Jermayne Lole DL Tia Savea EDGE Justice Finkley LB Liona Lefau LB Morice Blackwell STAR Jahdae Barron CB Warren Roberson S Derek Williams S Andrew Mukuba CB Kobe Black *** Couple of notes. – OL Connor Stroh was receiving some medial attention prior to practice. Had a brace on his left knee. – Michael Taaffe remained in a green jersey. Not expected to miss time. – I thought Kobe Black physically looked really impressive. He has put in some positive work to his frame this offseason. – On the defensive line, I was a bit surprised at Jermayne Lole's stature. Not as tall as I had originally expected him to be – he is listed at 6-foot-3 on the Texas roster. – Third team offensive line went as follows: LT Malik Agbo LG Max Merrill C Daniel Cruz RG Nate Kibble RT Brandon Baker – Johntay Cook had a drop on the first practice drive of the day on a screen pass. – WR DeAndre Moore was asked to be the lead block on an RPO screen attempt. There was noticeable collision with he and Michael Taaffe on the play. If Moore wants to crack the rotation, doing the dirty work is a great way to steal snaps. – I mentioned this in the thread, but Bolden and Wingo together on the field provide so much versatility with what you can call as a playcaller. – There was not much of the quarterbacks today, as we got to watch mostly the special teams period of practice. Word on Quinn Ewers remains the same – there is sky high expectations for a reason. *** Takeaways The talk of depth at Texas has merit. My first glance at a practice this fall and that was my biggest takeaway. There is NFL talent at every single position on both sides of the ball and it is noticeable from the first time the team broke into individual position groups. The defensive line has enough horses in the stable with size and experience to overcome maybe not having the two stallions they had a year ago with Sweat and Murphy. Alfred Collins specifically was really impressive with his frame.

Going to be a lot of variables that go into this. I am sure Sark is hoping for a lot of comfortable victories, so he doesnt have to make the call. Its more about the delta between the WRs, than if they are starting worthy. If Bond can make good on early predictions that he is a 1st rounder, he isnt coming off the field. I like Wingo to make a move, because he brings a different body type than the rest.

So who knows what he would've run as high school junior or senior.

Also, Texas has committed mid-6 figures to a minimum of 6 WRs at Sarkisian’s pleading. If boosters spend $400k on Golden to just see him returning kicks, that’s going to be a problem in the future.
