That said, there are ways to keep lunches reasonable.

Buddy has a house in Breck and I love his approach.  He takes a shopping bag with a couple of beers and bowls of instant ramen and buries it in the snow near the restaurant they'll be eating at so it's there at lunchtime.  Use the hot water for tea to make the ramen.  Still buy some fries or rice krispie treats or whatever, but saves $40+ w/ a family of 4.

Assuming the cars are stuck in place, how do they rescue ppl? Always wondered that on crazy high lifts and gondola sections

They throw a rope with a seat over the cable and lower you down.

I don’t consider that crazy high.  I know most lifts don’t get higher than that but there must be some gondolas that do (peak to peak or over a steep slope section maybe) where throwing rope won’t work.  And at least these folks were inside. Being stuck on a chair for hours is probably much more uncomfortable.

thx for the video tho, interesting stuff

I love sun valley. I would stay in the village, personally. Ketchum is fine and you can find something, and you will be closer to baldy, I just don't think you can beat the village.
You can always book through the resort, obviously, but most places, other than the lodge, are privately owned but still have resort privileges.  Most have their places listed on Airbnb or VRBO.
My order of preference would be the lodge apartments, then wildflower, then cottonwood, cottonwood 2, then atilier, then villager.
Just provides a great p base camp. And you will have access to the pools/hot tubs at the inn and the lodge.
Have to have a dinner at the ram.
Ketchum has staples like grumpy's sawtooth and the pioneer.
Grab breakfast at the kneadery.
Atkinson's is the only grocery store in town.  It is expensive but they have really good shit.
Apres on the mountain is decent.
Parking at baldy is plentiful.

Dude, thanks so much!!!

Update, but sorry without pics.  Headed up to Mammoth on Monday.  Clear skies, easy drive.  Wake up Tuesday to light falling snow.  That built.  And built.  Pretty much dumped the whole time on the hill Tuesday, and then eased off literally as we got off the mountain.  But dropped 9”-12” during the day.  Fun softies around, but the surface of the snow was so hard to see you couldn’t really let ‘er rip without eating shit.  My stamina was shit in the soft stuff.  I knew it would be.  But fun day.  Christmas Day we did presents and breakfast in the morning, and I asked the fam who’d be up for an afternoon half day?  Only the boy was up for it, so we hit the hill at the stroke of 12:30, and it was sunny and all that dump age from the day before was nicely groomed.  We charged it until 4.  Epic day.  I know I’m biased, but I’ve boarded a number of places from many Park City trips, Whistler, Mt Hood, Bachelor, Sun Valley, all over Tahoe, and Mammoth stacks up very well with all of them.

Keystone on Friday. This is the Spillway run. Bumpy AF but still fun

Was going to drive up again tomorrow but the high winds and avalanche alert will make it miserable.

I'm heading out to Steamboat at the end of January. Gonna try for more than 3 runs down the mountain this time. Been doing strength training with my core and legs. My body is ready.

Great snow in Whitefish.  Been out the last three days.  Going again tomorrow and either Thursday or Friday.  Then Saturday.  Heading back Sunday.

Today is our last delay at Taos.  Suspect it will be a short day since it is supposed to get uncomfortably windy.  Wish there was more snow but damn their operations team keeps the runs in great shape.  Lift lines? What are those?

Best snow on the mountain?  Past two days it's consistently been Juarez.

The vail park city situation is a complete disaster. A good portion of the people I meet on the lift at Alta have had to buy day passes at Alta or other areas and consequently double paying as no one wants to ruin their vacation.

Vail rightfully is super fucked as they should pay their people more.

One thing all of shaggy can agree on:

This is bullshit

Then won’t pay enough people to run their shit.

Vail corp has done this before too.

Just returned home from week in Winter Park.  Great snow, nice people, nice accommodations.  Checks every box except for the Lambo / Chanel / nightlife box.  Fine with me.

Drive in was a little sporty - when it's windy and snowing on Berthoud Pass its slippery and hard to see.

Even edit won’t fix that tapa shit.

Berthoud has been angry the past couple of weeks, for sure.

Just got back home from Pagosa - Wolf Creek was just okay.  Snowfall totals are way behind schedule and it was definitely warmer than usual.  Lines weren't terrible and it looks like the snow is on it's way.  Going to try to sneak up in Feb and for spring break.  Sadly, there were no @texasdago sittings.

@HRSchenker If you go to O'Neil's, get the Shepherd's Pie.  You're welcome.

We ate at Deno's, Hernando's, and one of the restaurants at the base (can't remember name).  What are your top 5 restaurants in that area other than those I named?  Also, where is the nicest restaurant in town?  Deno's for New Year's was great - is it the nicest?

Taos is great. Don’t tell anybody

Snowmass was great today.  8+ inches of new snow on the top of Long Shot and it was well worth the hike.

One of the best... or the worst?

Soooo this Park City strike is news to me. We are heading there next Friday, and NOTHING is refundable.

Anyone know if there is any sort of timeline on the ski patrol strike, or should I prepare the family for disaster?

Headed there at the end of the month.  Really hoping it gets settled.

Any idea if ski schools would be impacted by this strike since they get to skip the lines? From what I am reading, there is no resolution in site. If I have to wait an hour to ski 20% of the mountain that is only 23% open, I am going to consume so much Fireball on my own personal strike.

Tabernash Tavern is by far the best restaurant in the area, but it's in Tabernash, not Winter Park.  There are a couple of restaurants at Devil's Thumb Ranch that are supposed to be good, but you have to be staying at the resort to eat there.

I'm personally not a fan of Deno's, but a lot of locals like it.

My top 5 in the area would probably be:

1.  Tabernash Tavern (Tabernash) - by far and away the best restaurant in Grand County.  We eat here regularly.

2.  Fitch Ranch Cafe (Granby) - they own a ranch and sell their own meat at the restaurant.  Very good.  Also has a store attached where they sell the meat from their ranch.

3.  Grand Azteca (Granby) - the one in Fraser now has different ownership and has gone downhill. They used to be owned by the same family.

4. Volario's (Winter Park) - good, but not great Italian.

5. Fontenot's (Winter Park) - good, but not great Cajun place.  If you're in Houston or thereabouts, I'd pass on this one.

Hernando's is good, just insanely crowded.  We don't go there much.

Prepare for disaster, although Vail is getting hammered because of it (stock price is down over 6% because of this), so they might cave.  If they don't, PC will remain a disaster.

I have a personal account for PC that differs from the media narrative. We skied our first day 1/2 and it was C minus, but imo 60% of that was

I have a personal account for PC that differs from the media narrative. We skied our first day 1/2 and it was C minus, but imo 60% of that was from shitty snow. No doubt that Vail management got pantsed but evil corporations aside, they did a solid job of shipping in “manager” patrol personnel. By 1/4 they got a foot of snow and opened the King Kon side. If everyone drinks some truth serum, yeah, those lines suck, but they are not THAT much longer for peak holiday times. I’ve easily sat in Silver Lode lines that long before.

That said, just did one of two days at Jackson Hole, and off to Big Sky tomorrow night!

This is the news I need to hear. We are there on MLK weekend, so I am trying to temper my expectations.

I will be a single skier on the first day while my girls are in lessons, and we will all ski greens together on the 2nd day. Just wish there was snow in the forecast. Looks bone dry for 10 days.

Back from Taos.  Knees intact, my son's friend broke his wrist trying to pull off a method grab while snowboarding.  Landing was rough.

Anyway, weather was beautiful largely for all three days save for the third day when the winds really picked up.  The broken wrist cut our day short anyway so we didn't have to really deal with it.  Not a ton of runs open unfortunately but what was open was skiing impeccably and with non-existent lines, we could bomb runs and just have fun farting around and either carving or hitting the same jumps over and over again.  That north-facing aspect keeps the snow in great shape.

As I said before, the best snow was up on Highline and unfortunately the only run open was Juarez but the snow felt great.  If you're comfortable skiing up there, you can dodge (most) of the exposed rocks.  Skiers right was skiing better and was less trafficked.  Most people would drop in skiers left.  Either way, you rarely had more than 3 people on Juarez at one time so just pick your line and enjoy.

Do I wish more of Highline was open?  Hell to the yes.  Hunziker?  Yup.  All the goodness in the trees?  Yes.  They could have opened Blitz.  The four blacks that were open were short and meh so we just avoided them.  Moe's for example was just a bunch of janky bumps full of slowpoke yardsales.  But in the end, we had fun... save for the clinic visit.  Staff at Taos is always top notch.

Man that looks beautiful. Ty for the pics!

Its just been a nasty 2 months for snow for the Rockies/Sangre de Christos. It looks like some positive changes out west at the 1/20 timeframe. Of course that's the day we come home from PC, but I'm still super excited to get back on some skis.

Decent dusting in Red River today. Planning to head up at the end of the month if a bit more will come down. Pretty sure this is the first snowfall for them since before thanksgiving

Snow at the major CO resorts has been pretty good so far.  WP's got the entire mountain open.

Glad to hear that.  I was there last Feb (about a year ago).  Loved that run.  What a terrific , long , diverse run.....if im remembering correctly of course.  Is that the one where you ski down to it through to the right off the lift a bit, then hike up a decent incline?  The run ends on the far left (If your looking at a map) of the resort.

That’s it.  It’s off the Elk Camp lift.  The hike uphill isn’t easy especially with a foot or so of fresh snow and of course you are carrying your skis.  I was exhausted for the rest of the day but it was worth it.
