February 15Feb 15 Friday evening trips NB 25 from Springs to Denver airport can fuck all the way off. That's not that bad unless you are starting in south COS. Once you get to South Denver just get on E470 and the rest of the drive is a breeze.

Honestly probably good enough. I'm just a big fan of having lenses that overperform in bad weather. Learned my lesson the hard way in very flat conditions. If you're going to lean in one direction on a set of goggles, shoot for a pair that covers flat light. My opinion.
February 16Feb 16 6 hours ago, Pato del Muerto said: so what’s wrong with these other than single non changeable lens ? The point was the overall shift to a much more expensive lineup overall. 10 years ago they didn't have half as many models as they do today, and the vast majority of what they're selling today is more expensive than their most expensive* 10 years ago. *probably not completely accurate, but not far off.

February 18Feb 18 Been a fun 3 days at Vail/BC. Light sucks, snow is great. God bless those poor front range souls trying to get home tonight
February 18Feb 18 Finished two days at Purgatory... Got in Saturday night right after they'd gotten 27 inches of powder on beginning on Friday. Skied Sunday... Crowds at the base were packed, but I've waited longer at Copper and Breckenridge. Sunday morning was 'family time' so a lot of green runs then back to chair three and eight in the afternoon. We got just a dusting last night, and it was a good morning for our second day today. Family was in Durango, so this was just me and the guys... Blues and blacks ahoy. They've had a really dry winter up here, so the weekend crowds had pushed around all the powder making inconsistent surfaces with hard pack/ice underneath. After lunch there were a lot of places where it was very icy and hard to carve and make turns. Bluebird days all weekend... Simply gorgeous! Wasn't the best skiing I've had in Colorado, but it was the best trip I've had to Purgatory. And it's infinitely better than being at work this week.

My oldest just got back from Wolf Creek. Great snow, tracked him tree skiing via his app; which was living vicariously at its finest. Week two on rotator cuff surgery. This is fun! We took one trip to Purgatory back in 2021... I thought it was pretty nice. What's great about Purgatory is that if you are a good skier, you can enjoy lots of great runs with very little competition. Lots of Texans go to Purgatory. Yes, I know... I live in Texas... but what I'm saying is lots of Texans who ski like Texans go to Purgatory. That means you can ride the first lift up, head over to the backside and run laps on some of the more challenging runs, often by yourself. Same goes for some on the front side but then you have to start from the base. Plus, Durango is a great town!
February 19Feb 19 Author For any of you lucky to go to CB this year and who like to push yourself, these are great guides (below). If you can, join the Steeps Program one day with a guide... I think it is under $200 and they'll show you around the mountain... absolutely worth it. I've done it twice at CB. One time it was me and the guide. The other time it was just two of us. I would say you need to be level 8/9 to properly take advantage of the program... The two times I've done it wasn't always super clear where we were although I specifically remember we did go into Teo Bowl, all over North Face/Hawks Nest/Old Pro, parts of Spellbound Bowl, Last Steep, Headwall, Powder 8 Gully, Big Chute, Peel. The better the snow, the happier you will be. Teo Bowl is absolutely worth it but you have to hike out. If the snow is good, there are some great little gladed spots between Silver Queen and Ruby Road. They can hold snow and you can get a few quick steep turns and drop onto Ruby Road (watch out below for cross traffic). Avoid Robel's - it sucks. Again, do not F around in the bowls if you don't know where you are going. One wrong turn can take you to Last Steep (double but fine) or Cesspool (not fine) North Face - https://gunnisoncrestedbutte.com/blog/a-guide-to-skiing-the-north-face/ High Lift - https://gunnisoncrestedbutte.com/blog/skiing-crested-butte-extremes-from-the-high-lift/ East River - https://gunnisoncrestedbutte.com/blog/glade-skiing/# (fun area) Paradise Express - https://gunnisoncrestedbutte.com/blog/intermediate-and-advanced-crested-butte-skiing-from-paradise-express-lift/ Best Doubles - https://gunnisoncrestedbutte.com/blog/best-double-black-ski-runs-at-crested-butte/ Edited February 19Feb 19 by texasdago
February 19Feb 19 Author Side note on CB. Rambo sucks. I've looked over and see no reason to ski it. Locals will tell you... "Those who can, don't. Those who do, shouldn't". Want a last challenge? Ski over to the next run, Pinball. F Rambo.
February 23Feb 23 Looks like i'm headed to Park City in a few weeks with the family. I know absolutely nothing about the area. Looking at staying in Canyons Village instead of Park City. Any and all advice would be appreciated.
February 23Feb 23 Just boarded my flight in Denver back to San Diego. WOW- what a trip. 56” of snowfall since we rolled into Vail. Skied Saturday thru Saturday (took a break Thursday). Back bowls yesterday was some of the best I’ve skied. Coming back mid March 😎

February 23Feb 23 The boy is lucky enough to have been invited with his friends family to Deer Valley Thursday. Looks like weather may be in the 40's and sunny. Personally I'd prefer it a little colder, but 1) Who cares, I'm not going; and 2) The kid has only ever skied in MN so anything will be a vast improvement over the ice he's used to.
February 24Feb 24 Author The East Wall looks like amazing... From A-Basin's FB account. Check out the turns off of Willy's Wide. That hike is an ass-kicker but conditions look better than the last time I did it.

Only saw Bachelor in the summer and seeing the lava strewn runs just looked fascinating to me. 116" tells me exposed rocks shouldn't be an issue but I would think you can get some brutal core shots there. Also, top of the mountain looks cool but I hear that top lift doesn't run a lot which would suck.
February 25Feb 25 Bachelor is the one of the few mountains I've ever been blown off of. Went one day and it was a beautiful bluebird dream, went back the next day and left before noon. Wind was absolutely unreal. Couldn't believe they were still running lifts in that weather.
February 26Feb 26 Good time to be in the Pacific Northwest as well... Gotta figure out how to use some PTO.
February 26Feb 26 Author So excited... went ahead and booked a private guide for a day to take my son and I freeriding in Serre Chevalier. This is a great article discussing some of the better locations/lines: https://wepowder.com/fr/weblog/2021/09/14/the-best-freeride-lines-in-serre-chevalier Lots of good tree skiing And a majority of Euros love staying on piste so the ones who like to go off piste get the goods since a lot of areas are massive and can stay untracked for a long time...
February 26Feb 26 The lack of trees over there allows for a LOT of untouched terrain. I was never a huge powder skier, but the fact that you could ski pretty much anywhere gave you some awesome air opportunities. Jumping off cornices or ledges or whatever and dropping 20' into soft powder is fucking awesome.
February 26Feb 26 Precip this week has pushed Stevens over 300” for the year. But the high temps are getting into the 40s so I don’t know how the snow is performing day to day or hour to hour. Edited February 26Feb 26 by Pato del Muerto

Jumping off cornices or ledges or whatever and dropping 20' into soft powder is fucking awesome. Yeah... it can be an absolute blessing or curse depending on the weather conditions. The good news on Serre is that it is famous for tree skiing, too and if the weather sucks, there's plenty below treeline: https://www.shipskis.com/blog/5-top-resorts-for-tree-skiing-around-the-world/ but I have stayed in places like Obergurgl where the base of the mountain was 1930 meters so tree skiing was pretty much non-existent. I will say that if you want to try skiing in Europe, I really like Serre. Can recommend other places but the one exposure I had to it blew me away. On a side note... "A huge ski area of nearly 4,000 hectares, Serre Chevalier ski resort extends for 15km along the valley to include the towns of Briançon, St Chaffrey, Chantemerle, La Salle Les Alpes and Le Monêtier-les-Bains. More than just a ski resort, the area's wonderful history is best expressed in the old Vauban Fort that dominates the skyline above Briancon. The fort's main street, the Grande Rue, was originally constructed in the year AD1345!" 4,000 hectares = 9,800 acres. Whistler Blackcomb is 8,171 acres.
March 2Mar 2 How’s the snow in breck? Headed there next weekend (along with half the state of Texas. My last time EVER travelling on spring break! Happy dance).
March 3Mar 3 Author Which reminds me... what are the spring break dates this year for the major school districts? I know AISD is basically the week of the 17th whereas I think HISD and SBISD are the usual week of the 9th. AISD used to be synced up but I can't remember why they moved it back. I suppose if you're going to a place with other Texans, being "off" by a week is a plus.

March 5Mar 5 Have to go to Denver for a mediation next Wednesday. Going to ski Thursday. Probably Keystone because one of my college roommates lives in the area and has a buddy pass. Keystone is fine enough for me. I like long, groomed blues. I skied there in January (weekend before MLK day). It was so cold and storming in Denver that it kept the crowds at bay. Had a great day skiing.

March 6Mar 6 I wonder why Japan hasn’t ever been a a real factor in competitive Alpine skiing. They’ve had some excellent jumpers.
March 7Mar 7 In Bend. This town has really grown up since I was last here 20 years ago. Gonna do an afternoon half day tomorrow and a full day Saturday. Flying home Sunday but the rest of my HS buds are going Sunday and Monday too.

I was recently wondering the same thing and someone gave me a good answer but can't remember what it was. One point was that powder snow all the time isn't necessarily conducive to great conditions for alpine world cup skiers. Think of the great runs on the world cup circuit... icy, steep and hard as a rock. The antithesis of Japan. As for Taos, @JCHIL they've had such a terrible snow season but it looks like you timed it just right.
March 8Mar 8 We have a place there. I love the skiing. Lift tickets are cheap for resort skiing. Can get foggy at the top. I ski blue groomers pretty exclusively and it has plenty of long blues to satisfy me. I love the area.Headed up tomorrow, any suggestions / advice is appreciated. Family also pretty much sticks to blues.
March 8Mar 8 11” in Red River in the last 3 days. I won’t be dealing with the spring break fuckery, but that’s more snow than they got all of November and December combined.

We don’t eat out a ton as we like to cook and chill at house. But we always hit up Jalisco. Abruzzo has decent Italian. Jersey Boys has great pizza. We usually get a takeout pizza from there Bowling alley in whitefish is fun. Hellroaring Saloon for Apres. Don’t ignore backside of mountain. Several fun blue runs. You can sled at dry bridge park in Kalispell. But a cheap plastic sled at Costco. Or the big sporting goods store in Whitefish. Mountain Haus. You can cross country ski at the golf course. I have much better intel in summer. We spend summers there. In winter, we basically just ski all day and chill at the house.
