December 4, 20241 yr 22 hours ago, LTtxfan said: Setting the scene for the Purdue Coaching Search John Brice One of the most disappointing stretches in modern history of Power Conference football now is over at Purdue. The Boilermakers are officially seeking their next head coach, after parting ways Sunday with Ryan Walters, the promising defensive coordinator unable to translate that skill-set into head-coaching success. Purdue has resources, solid history and facilities; a fan base that wants to win. Who makes sense? Who can navigate the challenges at the school -- men's basketball is king; a natural recruiting base isn't overflowing with talent; the Big Ten is more arduous than ever -- to reclaim the consistent, very solid success of Jeff Brohm's tenure, and Joe Tiller some years before him? Here's the latest that sources are sharing with FootballScoop: Runner-up for the job the last time it was open, Tyson Helton is a legitimate contender once again to become a Power-Conference head coach. Hindsight always is 20/20, but Helton is arguably Brohm 2.0, and he's a natural fit for the Boilermakers. Additionally, sources tell FootballScoop that there already is internal support for Helton to helm the reins of the program. A Gainesville, Florida, native who played collegiately at Houston, Helton is a perfect six-for-six in leading his Western Kentucky program into the postseason as the Hilltoppers head coach. He was hired at WKU following a one-year stint as offensive coordinator for former Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt. All Helton's done in his six seasons in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is win eight or more games in five of those six years to go along with four postseason victories in five appearances; the Toppers are awaiting their bowl bid for this season's eight-win campaign. Ohio coach Tim Albin, a Midwest staple doing flat-out remarkable work atop the Bobcats program, is another name to watch -- if he isn't first hired by Charlotte. As heir apparent to Frank Solich, Albin continues to make Ohio one of the Group of Five's most consistent winners -- and talent developers. His Bobcats roster has been raided via the NCAA Transfer Portal in recent years; they just keep winning. Charles Huff is another potential fit for the Boilermakers; he's guiding Marshall in this week's Sun Belt Conference title-game and is the coveted choice for Southern Miss's current opening; they've had in-depth discussions. Army coach Jeff Monken has the longest track record of potential Purdue candidates, and sources with direct knowledge tell FootballScoop that Monken has definite interest in the position. Monken, a Peoria, Illinois, native whose family is synonymous with football in that state and across the Midwest, has Army with its third season of 10 or more wins since 2017; Monken also knows the rigors of being at a school with strong academics and some limitations in resources and recruiting. "There's simply no question Jeff could find the right players and staff to make Purdue a consistent winner in the Big Ten," a source who's been in recent contact with Monken told FootballScoop Monday afternoon. "He has a plan." If Purdue wants to tap into its more recent success, Brian Brohm is the current Louisville offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for his brother, Jeff. He's got obvious ties to the school, the region and a strong offensive acumen, which seems a key in this process for the Boilermakers following the dismal Walters experience. UNLV head coach Barry Odom is potentially in line for a significant new role, and he's expected to be in the mix at North Carolina, as well as potentially at West Virginia and Purdue. He has UNLV one upset-win against Boise State from a landmark College Football Playoff appearance. Three more coaches worth monitoring in the Purdue search are Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell, Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield and Missouri offensive coordinator Kirby Moore, who's expected to be a head coach much sooner than later after his strong work atop the Tigers's offense and after turning down the opportunity to hop to a more high-profile offensive play-caller role in last year's cycle. Of the above list, Helton, Albin, and Monken are most interesting. Huff and Brohm less so. Not sure Odom would want to go there, as I could see him at a higher profile program in his next step. The others? Meh. Hard pass on Mack Brown.

Holy cow, we posted at the same time. Watched him in high school and at Pitt. He was undone by some bad offensive coaching but, he also contributed to that with some head-scratching decisions. He has done well in coaching. I don’t really know him although we have spoken. His dad played high school and college with one of my cousins.

Going with an older, retread coach is a different tack for them. Still, Bronco is probably a good get and fit for them and likely won't get poached. May be his last coaching stop. Glad Utah State didn't get BYU's DC, Jay Hill, who was in the mix. He's done an amazing job at BYU and was a former HC (Weber State).

Eck, the coach ai Idaho also said no. Supposedly harsin was in the mix but can't confirm. The AD is an absolute shit show and has alienated pretty much everyone that works with/for her and many boosters. I think bronco was willing to take it because supposedly his wife really wanted to be back in Utah and secondly he doesn't really have to put up with any shit from the AD. He's in a spot financially and career wise where he can just say bye if she tries to pull anything with him. Guess we will see how it plays out.

Not surprised Hill was their #1 target. I've heard from someone close to Utah State that there will probably be an announcement about Hill in the next days. He will get a promotion / upgraded title at BYU, so it's not just money that kept him here, but there's also still some possible dominos to fall if Kyle Whittingham retires, too. Drama may not be over.

He went 10-4 last year, 12-2 in 2021 with a Fiesta Bowl win, numerous double digit wins in the years before that, and a winning record since 2007. Will they find a coach who will have that level of success over the next 5 years? I doubt it.

December 6, 20241 yr Total pipe dream. But does Gundy want to come be our offensive analyst/special assistant a la Paul Chryst. That dude always has good ideas; he just doesn't always have the players to execute his good ideas (and I recognize that, as a head coach, the latter is his fault/issue).
