  • Found him. Hunting by yourself sucks! Once I got him gutted,I had to drag his fat ass up a hill and down the edge of a wheat field about 100 yards. Great way to start the season. Good luck gentlemen!

  • Our boys shot a massive toad yesterday.  5.5yrs, 160lbs.  For Coleman county, that's BIG! Look at that layer of fat!

  • It’s been a long three weeks to finally getting my hands on this buck. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we started getting pictures of our 2 target bucks this year about 4 weeks ago.  On 11/2,

I am sure you can get it in Hondo. Mummes or Lyssy and Eckel.

Lyssy and Eckel stocks it bagged in a lot of places and will bring in bulk if they don't have it already.

Most feed stores will order it for you if they don't keep it on hand if you'll agree to buy a certain amount.

Side note - be wary if you have any Aoudad.  They're like a heat seeking missile when it hits the ground and will break your bank in a hurry.

I agree with the above, but the biggest issue are the neighbors. I have a very healthy population on my place. The neighbors basically believe in the "if it's brown it's down." We had up to 3 doe on my place that dropped twins every year. Throught the last few years all but one has been shot by a neighbor. I talked to the guys I think are doing it and they swear they wouldn't shoot a doe with twins. They are the only ones that could have shot them imo. They don't travel far. It is just a tough environment hunting on these smaller places.

With that said, I ordered a timed protein feeder and plan to feed some going forward. So I guess I am a hypocrite? [emoji2]

Have the protein timed to open during times when hunters are in blinds and hopefully the deer will be at your place getting a snack instead of getting shot at the neighbor’s.

No aoudad. Will the cows eat that stuff?

Cows will eat it and the sacks it came in and the tractor.

Well, my cold streak continues.  Did a cast-n-blast with my son and his buddies this weekend in Port Mansfield.  Two ducks and three fish between six of us.  First duck hunt for my son and he didn't even get to pull the trigger.  Bill the bird dog was disappointed and was givin the boys the what for on the ride back.  Fished our asses off Saturday afternoon with minimal success as well.  If anyone is on a hot streak and wants to be completely disappointed, give me a shout... because I'm your guy.

My son is usually so even-keeled, but he started to show some signs of frustration on the drive home yesterday.  He's had zero luck this year.  Struck out turkey hunting.  Two fishing trips to the coast put up goose eggs.  Went all deer season and didn't see a shooter buck.  Went last weekend on a doe mission and didn't see a single doe.  Seems like every hunting / fishing trip we've had has been a dud.  And these aren't speculative areas.  Proven spots with history of great results.  Our timing just sucks.

Only silver lining was that I did hook a really nice 24" red wade fishing Saturday afternoon.  Fun little tussle and good eating last night.  And, the weather was awesome.

Hard not to be frustrated but I'm sure he'll figure it out soon (if not already) - that pic is what it's all about.   fwiw, been a VERY rough year for ducks.

Killed more pigs than ducks this year.

We had a LONG conversation on the drive home about exactly that.  Enjoying the moment.  Appreciating what you're surrounded by.  And, the fact that they call it hunting not killing and fishing not catching for a reason.  Slow weekends like we had makes it much sweeter when you do have success.

I've been getting my ass kicked at work for the last 18 months.  But, that all fades far into the background when you're hip deep in the Lower Laguna Madre carefully steering a redfish into your dip net.  I swear I got him on the stringer and just kind of stood there for a few minutes taking it all in.  And, I'd trade a limit of trout or reds caught soaking bait from the boat for just one nice fish like that red on artificials while wading.

This is a weird game cam photo glitch, right?  I’m really hoping there isn’t a nice buck out there with a shot off stump of a back right leg.

My bad.  Congrats on that hog, my guy.

At first I thought it was just his hock right above the grass line and the leg beneath it.  Then, I thought it was two frames merged together or something.  But, I zoomed in, and now I truly think that leg is gone just below the joint.  Holy crap.

Had a doe like that around the corner from my house a few years ago.  Looked totally healthy otherwise, but right leg gone below the joint.

That sucks. We had a deer we called tripod with the same deal. He was decent but never wanted to shoot him because I don't want 1 ham. Sad deal.

I might have to get one of my boys out there for a late youth season mercy killing.

Welp, wasn't planning to head to the lease this weekend, but with the hard freeze coming up on Monday, looks like I gotta make a trip after work tomorrow so that I can shut off the water and drain everything so we don't end up with busted plumbing in the camp house. Was hoping somebody else was bringing their kids for final youth weekend, but doesn't sound like it, and since I'm "lease manager" for our group, I drew short straw.

Ehh, could be worse, it's only a 2 hour drive, and I'll have a nice quiet evening to myself out by the fire.

Nevermind. One of the other guys shut everything off right before the last freeze 2 weeks ago. Nobody has been back since, so no trip necessary.

@USCATX A: I’m seeing a lower leg when I zoom in, highlighted markup below.

B: the buck is standing with perfect posture and his weight pretty evenly distributed, and they tend to show some really weird posture if they’re missing a leg, like that photo above.

If their back leg gets injured, you'll often see the opposite antler grow all funky.

Funny? enough, I have another young buck with a bum back leg. Maybe got hit by a car or just messed with the wrong buck. His opposite antler is non existent. He looks like a 2.5yr old so I am hoping he will heal but very likely he never amounts to much. The side that did grow is impressive for his age. He was also chasing ass all season like his life depended on it 🤣.

At the cabin soloing it. About to rack, bring on the green heads. May get a surprise member in the morning but he said he is drinking whiskey.

Hogs are back with a vengeance at the farm.  Finally had some time to deploy a new hog gun: 6.5mm Grendel PSA pistol with AMG Rattler V2 TS35-384 and Hyperion K.  AAC Sabre Blade Blacktip 123gr is legit.

Still need to refine the thermal’s zero (it’s shooting a tad high and to the right) but it gets the job done out to 200 yards.  I’m using a Maximum Point Blank Range that gives a near zero of 50 yards and far zero at 150 yards (1” high at 100) on a 2 inch target at 2250fps.  That’s good for a 2 inch head/neck shot from 29 to 179 yards.

This rig is waaaay more fun to spot and stalk with than my old DPMS GII 308 and X-Sight 2 HD nightvision scope, unsuppressed.

MAN. Love my Grendel. We have a very similar setup. Mine's a 16" barrel with a AGM Rattler TS25-384 V1. I've unalived plenty of hogs with it. Usually shoot Hornady Black, but I did pick up several hundred rounds of those Sabre black tips that I haven't shot yet. Hoping to go this weekend.

Gorgeous weather on tap this weekend, so I'm gonna run up to my lease tomorrow to get out of the city and enjoy some time in the great outdoors. Need to check on everything at the camphouse after the big freeze and then do some random off-season chores like turning off feeders and shit. Also gonna go drive around to some of the less seldom visited parts of the property and see if I can scout any potential spots for a new stand. End the day with some beers by the fire after a 95% Dry January.

Oh yeah, also gonna hang up my Euro mount that I just got back from the buck I shot back in November. Will be the first mount killed by a current member of the lease to hang in the cabin.

Nice euro mount.   My good buddy sent me this pic a few weeks ago.   They went down to their hunting lease and hung these skull mounts from the deer shot on the place the last 5 years.  Not bad from a spot within 5 miles of downtown Nacodoches.

Ready to get out and do some shed hunting / rucking / pig slaying. Want to get out before it gets too hot. Anybody have a good read on Gillespie / Mason county drops? Is late February too early?

Milam county is pretty ripe for the picking by the end of February. We are MLD so I usually finish filling my freezer middle or late February, then spend a day or so cruising the farm and hunting arrowheads and sheds. And drinking lots of lonestar light as that seems to be all they have out there.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to hunt quail for the first time, and it was an absolute blast.  Had to go to Oklahoma to do it, but it was worth it.

We were after both pen-raised and wild quail.  The pens flew well, and we were lucky to find 2 coveys of wild birds.  Cold front hit about 30 minutes before the hunt and it was windy as hell, so I deployed the 12 gauge over the 20.  Man, it was just a ton of fun.

Bummed.

Was planning to take a group of hometown buddies out to my lease Saturday morning. Been talking about it since November and finally found a weekend where all of us were free, which is very hard to do. Weather forecast this weekend sucks ass. Not gonna make it out of the low 40's and looks like guaranteed rain starting late afternoon and then hard rain Sunday for the drive home. Pretty much defeats the whole purpose of going out (ride around in the UTV's, drink beer out by the fire), so we decided to postpone. Hoping to try again sometime mid-March but who knows?

Got our first bobcat trail cam photo last week in Lampasas, pretty cool.

Fuck that. Go. There is fun to be had in that weather. Put on some boots. Animals will be out.

4 does last night and 1 this morning. Put the rifle away and went shed hunting after that. Found a shit load of single 3 points, but on the way back to the buggy I found this set. My first matching set in probably a decade

Two years ago, I went helicopter hog hunting in Dilley about this time of year.  Only shot two pigs, but it was still a blast.  Group shot 12 total.  The previous year on the same hunt, they shot just over 200.  The highlight of the flight was when we jumped a BIG mature buck.  Couldn't count points, but he was at least a mainframe 10.  He was bedded down, hopped up and ran about 20 yards before jumping over a little briar patch.  When he landed on the other side... POP!  Both antlers flew off.  Never seen that in my life, let alone in the air.  I had my GoPro running, but that buck was on the other side of the chopper.  We circled for a bit to see if we could find an open spot to land and find the sheds, but it was so incredibly thick that we would've had to land 200 yards away and wade our way through some crazy dense brush.

Pussies! I wish I could do that in the worst conditions. I will be doing that instead at the baseball fields. No beer, no comradery, just pain!

Went out for a little while to check on things and saw this guy/gal from a long way off.
Nappypoo time on a nice Sunday in the trees.

Fished a dead one out of a stock tank once (metal one- not a pond like y’all hillbillies call them), but never seen an alive one in our country.
Friends of mine rented some grass on the NE/SD state line one year and we had to doctor several young cows for quills in their face.

My dipshit boxer would have a run in with one about every six months. This went on for a solid 5-6 years. It happened enough that I got pretty damn good at pulling quills and he got good about sitting there for it.

We have a dog pound dog that will not stop fighting badgers. I think he’s up to six of them now. His chest is pretty much nothing but scar tissue.

Took a pretty nice axis Saturday night at the ranch.  Tipped out full velvet.  Not as big as the one I shot a few years ago, but should make another nice mount.  Right at 29" main beams.  Then, this crew showed up right at dusk last night at the cistern in front of the house.  That one in the middle is legit.  I'm thinking he's pushing 34".  Hoping to take my son out this coming weekend to see if he sticks around.

I was hunting near Camp Wood for Axis in December with my daughter.  One was in a tree 15 feet away from our stand eating the entire time.  Acted almost like a monkey eating with hands.  Hung out for a good two hours.

That was always the given reason for a 'kill-order" on all porcupines growing up.  Haven't seen one on the place in years, but back in the day that was the order of the day

Cleaning out stuff at my parents’ house. Found this pic of my mom toting a shotgun on a white wing hunt in the valley, probably late 1960s.

Looks like I'm heading up to the lease tomorrow with my brother and my niece. First trip in a few months. Gonna go set up a new camera at one feeder, do some mowing around the camphouse...etc. but mostly just enjoy a day away from the city.

I turned off all the feeders last time I was there in February, but still occasionally seeing hogs randomly passing by the cameras. I think next time out I'm gonna fill up 1 specific feeder that sits near a hog trail and make that our Summer hog hunting spot. We'll fill up the rest and start feeding around Labor Day as usual.
