See I thought he was great. It showed they were all just a bunch of regular guys thrown into war, doing impossible things.  He's the last guy you'd think of as the war type.  But everyone sees actors thru their own lens'

He just doesn’t have it, IMO. However, I can totally see him as Private Pyle in FMJ

Since you brought up the Wire, my vote for shittiest casting goes to this ol' college cut havin' ass bitch. Every scene with her and Daniels I'd swear he was talking to his mom.

Tom Cruise as Jack Racher. Just...no.

Paul Giamatti in Saving Private Ryan

Did you even watch the movie? A beleaguered Giamatti cusses out a soldier, sits on a pile of rubble to rub his feet, causing the wall to collapse, exposing Germans and starting a Mexican standoff. Giamatti was perfect.

This thread is about casting, not characters.  They didn't change anything about the character - except the actor who plays him.

OK, who should have played Sgt Hill, a cursing, tired, miserable soldier who comically wants to rest his tired dogs and who nearly wets himself when he breaks the wall down to the German hideout?

I see a crossed dressed Natalie Portman......

Giamatti could play Portman...  he's that good.

I'm a fan.  Good guys, bad guys, fucked up guys, he can play 'em all.

NSIAP but Christian Slater as Lucky Luciano in the movie Mobsters.

Kevin Costner in anything he has ever done.  I may give a pass on Tin Cup but he really kind of sucks.

Silverado was a great role for him.

Crash Davis says you're goofy

Ok, I give another pass on Bull Durham.  But it's more like a Baker Mayfield situation to me where he looks good because he is surrounded by talent.

To each his own, but damn man Silverado is just good clean fun all around.

Who was he surrounded by ?  Robbins, Saranden ?  He was great in that role.

Jeff Daniels in Godless.

Jeff Daniels has never done it for me.  I like him, him not a lot of memorable roles IMO.  Am I forgetting something big he did ?

I did like him as the uptight NASA manager in The Martian.

There was a movie Costner was in with Aflek I thought he was good in, played the BIL I think and helps out Aflek when is unemployed.

Costner was good in No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Tin Cup, and most of all, Fandango.

Forgot about Fandango, one of my cult favorites.

They intend for him to carry a film but he is just not good enough to pull it off.

I gotta disagree. He's been the lead in many films, and he kept getting  them so he was bankable.  He chose some lame scripts to star in. The Postman,  Waterworld, Robin Hood to name 3

I’m not a huge fan of Costner but he was good in all those

Mobsters was a shitty movie all around.  Can't fault Slater for a terrible movie.

Wow, negged over saying Costner is not a good actor.  Somebody has the gay for Kevin.

So was Open Range

Yeah, I don't get the hate for the guy. He's played some damn great roles, and he's been in some stinkers. Not an actor out there who hasn't. He was made out to be movie star to be, and has acted much better than that shallow moniker suggests.

I'd take him over a Tom Cruise type actor/movie star any day of the week.

Costner was the king of the classic dramatic technique known as the conspicuous butt in the movie walk, very popular for the mega hunks of the late eighties and nineties. This guy sold a lot of movie tickets to middle aged women who knew what they were getting when they went to see one of this movies. Its practically the only reason anyone bought a ticket and sat through Dances with Wolves.

just take your neg and shut the fuck up you stupid fucking pussy.

Costner has some duds but

Crash Davis

Roy McAvoy

Gardner Barnes

and

Jake

are all great characters specifically because of Costner

I will allow that others could have just as adeptly played roles like Ray Kinsella and Tom Farrell but Costner owns the four I mentioned above.

Not just that, I knew a shit load of Sargents as a military dependent that coached our baseball and football teams, acted as our father figures while our fathers were deployed, etc. Guys who had zero athletic ability, but were damn good at doing Army shit, and knew how to do their part to keep an army in the field. Paul was a fucking perfect fit for that role.

Seth Rogen, The Green Hornet

SCARFACE (casting, not the move quality, which was campy fun)

Really, almost everyone in Scarface.  Pacino, Robert Loggia, F. Murray Abraham, the drug lord in South America, as Cubans or South Americans.  I think only Steven Bauer (Tony’s friend) was Cuban.

Why didn’t they just hire Cubans/Latinos?  The accents were terrible;  Loggia’s was probably the worst

I watched Speed last night for the first time since theaters.  I had forgotten he was Keanu's partner.  I found that to be odd casting.  Some dad looking guy as a LAPD bomb specialist next to ultra-cool surfer vibe of Keanu.  (Side note:  his character's name was Harry in it.  I decided to look it up on IMDb last night to confirm my suspicion.  Yep, two consecutive roles named Harry).

He was great in Speed. Kind of a hang-dog veteran gets shot by his hot-shot partner.

And Nathan Fucking Arizona! Shit just came full circle. And for the record, anyone who shit-talks Bull Durham has never held a baseball, and probably pees sitting down.

That aside, Cruise as Reacher gets my vote.

Costner can do baseball movies forever, but that shootout in Open Range was the balls.

Lollygagers

Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus.
I could watch Gladiator forever but fast forward every scene Joaquin is in and not care

or maybe he played the villain so well I hated him.  I’m not sure.

This is the worst post on this thread. He was nominated for an Oscar. Come on man.
