Kim Ng and MLB's financial backing is going to turn this into the pro league we've been waiting for.
June 17Jun 17 Author Boo So far the only confirmed player in the portal is Rachel Wells, but she was a walk-on and I do not believe was going to be allocated a scholarship for 2026. No more walk-ons with the new scholarships. Enjoy your ring and hope she finds a scholarship somewhere Edited June 17Jun 17 by Js1
June 17Jun 17 It's gonna be hard for us to find a top-flight portal pitcher wiling to come in a back up Kavan. It makes sense Pannell would choose tamu given that Kennedy has finally graduated at 35 years old. I'd settle for a lefty curve thrower like Czech.

Hard to ask a top-flight pitcher to come in and have to split innings with Cam, Wells and maybe Cit. aggy lost Kennedy (157.2 IP) and Lessentine is their top returner (66.1 IP). There's a clear gap for a #2 pitcher after Lessentine, since Peters (36), Leavitt (41.1), Sparks (49) and Munnerlyn (26) kind of split the #3 role. It's probably a battle for staff ace. Whereas Texas returns Kavan (207 IP), Cit (82) and Cam (62). There's definitely a very established #1 and battle between 2 pitchers who got a lot of time in the circle for #2 than at aggy. Cam was basically our #4 pitcher most of the year and got as many innings as aggy's #2. Edited June 17Jun 17 by Js1

Maybe it is out of necessity, but he usually has an ace and then #2 is by committee.

But she will probably hit more often in the DP role. I think she will get a similar load to Cam last year - some spot starts against bad teams, some 1 or 2 inning relief when we are up big against other teams. Work her way up in the circle of trust by postseason play, like Cam did. This is assuming we Cit doesn't leave and/or we don't get a portal pitcher.
June 17Jun 17 42 minutes ago, Cairn Horn88 said: How much will Wells contribute when she gets here? This is a tough question because the answer can literally be on both ends of the spectrum and for totally different reasons. A smart man would say that if she plays a lot, then that means our season has gone sideways. However, I think she has enough talent to break into the lineup as an every day hitter and reliable #3 on the mound. Mike will spend this fall getting her drop ball to his liking. The quicker she learns how to use that pitch effectively, the more she will pitch. She has tremendous power at the plate, but it will take some time for her to hit on a consistent basis against SEC competition. I think we will see some tape measure shots from her in the fall against lesser competition.

June 17Jun 17 On paper, Pannell's role at Mizzou made her a good fit for Texas: someone who could spot start but also hop in as needed to close out tight games. Of course, we already have pitchers with that potential, just not as proven. Aggy can offer more starts and total innings, but perhaps a lesser chance of playing for a ring in OKC. Wells has a world of hitting and pitching potential. She should be great once she settles in. But I agree that if she's leaned on a lot next season, we've had something go way wrong elsewhere on the roster. Barring really bad injury luck, we'll have too many Top 100 players available to find ourselves in that predicament.

Based on his comments a bit ago, it does sound like Nichols or Lawson will have a battle there for 3rd. Though I haven't seen any destination or visits for Lindemuth yet (Tech transfer 3B)
June 18Jun 18 Author Also just for fun - 2-4, RBI, R off Texas 1-3, R, K off Canady in game 1 of the series 0-3 off Riassetto (1 AB) and Canady (2 ABs) in game 2 of the series 1-4, K off Canady in game 3 of the series Also our last OF transfer from the Arizona Wildcats is still a program favorite

Incoming freshman infielder Jaycie Nichols is a top 10 national recruit from Caddo High School who will be a strong candidate to replace Scott at third base. Nichols has crazy athleticism, winning four state championships in softball, a state title in the long jump and reaching the state semifinals in basketball. A 4.0 student, Nichols maintained a .450 batting average and stole 66 bases in three seasons of travel ball. "Jaycie Nichols possesses speed, power and defense," White said. "When those attributes are combined with her softball IQ, she has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Janae Jefferson and Mia Scott."
June 18Jun 18 There are 4 incoming Freshmen that could possibly play 3rd. I'm sure the cream will rise to the top. Even if Texas gets Lindmuth one of the Freshmen could prove to be better. I'm not concerned about Katie having to play 3rd.

Yep, other than DP, there's not a lot of holes in our roster between Mike's last 4 recruiting classes 2022 - Atwood, Goode, Cit, Vivi 2023 - Kavan, Stewie, Henry 2024 - Salmon 2025 - Nichols, Crabtree, Wells, Sneed, Lawson Not to mention 2026 - two 5 stars (Abdullah and Doty) + South and Clemmer and Booe
June 18Jun 18 Author Altmeyer now following Texas Softball, so announcing incoming Spearman looks Tech bound by her follows (Pannell and Canady). Tough to pry an El Paso girl from Tech. aggy picked up 2 OKST transfers, including Tallen Edwards Some mutual follows between Dakota Kennedy and Arkansas

I'd love to get one of her or Spearman, and the latter I guess is fading from us.

I haven’t seen any names for us except Rachel Wells (yet)
June 19Jun 19 I’d be very pleased with those portal adds. Still would like some pitching help, unless Wells can really step up as a freshman.
June 19Jun 19 Author Obstruction rule During the meeting, committee members clarified the obstruction rule. Obstruction occurs when a defensive player, neither in possession of the ball nor in the act of fielding a batted ball, impedes a batter's attempt to make contact with a pitch or impedes the progress of any runner who is legally running bases on a live ball. It can be intentional or unintentional. It is obstruction when a defensive player, while not in possession of the ball, does one of the following: Blocks any part of the leading edge of first, second or third base or home plate (as defined). Otherwise blocks the runner from advancing or returning to a base. The defensive player is not considered obstructing if the player is in possession of the ball or if the movement or position of the defensive player did not impede or alter the runner's path to a base or home plate. Notes: Once in possession of the ball, the defensive player can be positioned between the runner and the base/plate. Obstruction may be ruled even though there is no physical contact. Obstruction can occur on a force or tag play. Blocking the leading edge of the base constitutes obstruction unless the runner's ability to reach the base is not hindered. If the base runner would have been out, regardless of the defensive player's movement or positioning, which had no effect on the play, the runner would remain out, and the obstruction would be ignored.

It seems like the umpires either ignored or didn't know the "would've been out either way" part of the rule because it was buried in the footnote. I'm assuming the discussion/clarification was just an emphasis on the common sense part of the rule: if the runner is out by 5 feet, the runner is fucking out, there is no obstruction
