Disagree. That one is perhaps the most important kind to call. The rule protects the defender just as much as the offensive player. Dropping your head like that is how necks get broken. See what you hit and you don't get called for targeting on that play.

I hear what you’re saying but you’re just penalizing for bad tackling form. “Targeting” implies you made someone a target with malicious intent and is why the penalty originated. Penalizing bad tackling form and fundamentals was not the intent.

Something bizarre is gonna have to happen to get TxSt back in it, which is very unlikely.   ASU is lucky to get there with a W.  Tough luck for the Cats.

We need miracle. Some kind of Doug Flutie. Hail Mary throw it up to the gods play.

T-O, ASU ball on TxSt 18  3rd and 8. Damn, 1st and goal. Def game.

No, leading with the crown of the helmet has been illegal for decades to prevent injuries. It used to be called spearing.

Bummer for Texas St.  Great game to watch other than a loss.

Good showing, even in defeat, by the Cats. Best of luck to the rest of their season.

Yeah Tech has no defense, so anything can happen there

That UNT bet was my hard bet vs the spread. Techy Tech is lost in a dust storm!

Still bad form. The QB was being hit by two other players at the same time. He inadvertently hit him helmet to helmet. No intent. Penalize and move on. It’s not targeting in the spirit in which it was derived. Shouldn’t be thrown out of game. Thats all I’m saying. Guess I’m arguing the degree and punishment more than the act. Not arguing. I understand your stance. I’m old. I was a linebacker. Head up, see what you hit, face mask is like crosshairs on a gun. Doesn’t always happen though.

3-0 on the shock the state of Arizona tour. If I’m going to be handing over thousands of dollars to this university for a masters I am going to enjoy the rare moments of gridiron success. Good on my guys for actually going to San Marcos for this game.

This ^^^^ . Unimpressed with the play calling in the 2nd half.  Hero ball was not working, the long interception where the defense wasn’t close to ready and the receiver was wide open was a bad miss, and every screen or pitch back ended up in a loss. They needed to run forward and use the ball control offense that worked in the 1st half. Almost beat a quality opponent though, good crowd (loud), and maybe this loss will spur them on, and keep GJ a little longer. If he wins 10-11 games, I don’t think he’ll last long, unfortunately. Eat ‘em up!

Failing to keep one's eyes up while tackling (i.e., spearing, [one form of] targeting) is the kind of "bad form" that has far and away the greatest impact on risk of cervical spine fractures that cause quadriplegia (in the offending player). There were once people against requiring helmets also.

I figured there was targeting discussion in this thread.  If you would have shown me the 2 plays back to back, I would have guessed both would have been called, but if you told me only 1 was called, I would have guessed the first one against ASU.  Would like to see a replay and an explanation as to why that was overturned because I clearly still have no idea what targeting is (and I'm guessing neither does anyone else - seems like it is still a total crapshoot).

Targeting:

(1 ) No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. This is defined as a point within 6 inches of the apex.

(2) No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. A ball-carrier is not considered defenseless.

Now define circular...

In the game the first was definitely targeting. The second was borderline. The field refs were XII. Generally, at least the last ten or so years, visitors' refs are on the field and home refs man the review staff, although I think that's a contract matter and we played Bama in Austin with XII refs and in Tuscaloosa with SEC refs.

(Side note: my book says we won that first Bama game; our own conference refs fucked us out of two points and a short field. PK and the D failed us there, just as they did the 2023 0U game.)

I know y'all may be referring to it as Kinne's offense because he's the HC and people keep acting like he's the architect, but Mack Leftwich runs the O and calls the plays.  Couldn't agree more on the playcalling being less than ideal, and it was like that from the jump - we were behind the chains all night because of limp dick calls on 1st and 2nd down.  The late game horizontal calls were GDGD-esque and had me punching air.  There is some unreal beauty in our offense when it's playing balls out, but it can't slow down and idle for shit.  Grinding out games isn't what we do well, and I think they were trying to pace, knowing ASU can eat clock.  I'd rather hang brain and lose going full throttle than trying to do something other than what we do best.

The point is well-taken that referees see fouls differently. I honestly felt the first one should have been called. There was formerly (and may still be-- I have not looked to see what modifications have been formally introduced) a specific instruction that when it was not clear whether contact constituted targeting, the call should be made.

I feel like the first one only wasn't called because the top of helmet glanced off after impact.  The rule has been a mess since inception.  It's too complicated and too punishing.
