Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo has died of brain cancer at the age of 58, the NBA announced Monday.

"Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.

That's terrible. RIP.

He was an amazing humanitarian and apparently a great dude... but I'm a little embarrassed to say that the first thing that popped into my mind was the "Who wants to sex Mutumbo?" story.

Damn, didn’t know he had cancer. I was just showing my 8 year old boy his signature finger wag when you block a shot on the way to his basketball game yesterday.

Just a quick story. Dikembe's mother died during wartime in the Congo when she couldn't get to a hospital in time because an ambulance was unavailable. Plus, she could have been arrested due to the climate. Dikembe's response to that tragedy? He built a hospital in his hometown.

Same. No more sex Mutumbo.

I figured he was early 60s. 58 is young even for a big dude.

f cancer

RIP

I'll always remember him laying on the floor with the ball after his Nuggets finished the first ever NBA 8 over 1 upset against the Sonics

Here is the Atlanta area he was beloved. The Hawks never got anywhere, but he was such a defensive stalwart in the paint. Entertaining contributor to the game without being a diva.

Damn.  I stepped on his foot in an airport in Orlando.  I'm so glad I didn't do the finger wave, which crossed my mind for a split second.  RIP.

My favorite all time player. I had his Nuggets navy blue jersey in elementary school. Such an awesome player. Rip

Oh, man, this is fucking rotten!

All-time great defender, and very funny and intelligent guy if you ever caught his talk show appearances.

You were way too young, Mountain. Fuck cancer!

This is terrifically sad. Did not know he was ill, but apparently it was first reported nearly two years ago.

Dude was known for being huge and finger wagging, but he had a great smile and big heart.

Couple of other talk-show moments. Seemed like he made the rounds on Letterman and Conan almost as often as he did on the NBA on NBC.

Sucks, man. Fuck cancer.

What an amazing human being he was. 58 years seems so very short for a man who did so much to better the lives of the people back home in The Congo as well as Africa as a whole. His love of people was his greatest quality. We could use more folks like him.

My absolute favorite basketball memory of him will always be seeing him lying on the floor after game 5 in Seattle in 1994 holding the ball. The sheer joy in his face was one of the most iconic moments in NBA history. That was the perfect encapsulation of who Dikembe was as a human being. The world was better for him being born and he left things far better than he found them. Rest in peace big man.

Not get side tracked, but that was also a sublime moment because those Seattle teams were a bunch of assholes coached by a bigger asshole.
