The Astros are about $17M under the Competitive Balance Tax threshold after the Tucker trade, according to FanGraphs. They were about $10M under before today.Tucker was slated to get around $16M this year and Paredes should get around $7M

Let's see what the rest of the off-season is.  Maybe 2025 odds go from 8% to 5% but 2026-27 go from 2% to 5% also.*

Add in Press' money and give it to Alonso

Today is another reminder of why you sign players way before they get close to free agency. You could have done a deal with Kyle Tucker basically every year. And he always said he was open for it. Now you’re traded one of the games best left handed hitters.

Connor is right as usual about Crane and Dana. I hope attendance craters. Sell the team.

Why would you believe Kyle Tucker?

#1010

He's not technically lying.  Of course the contract he would have signed would have had to have been for 400 or 500 million.  Tucker is and has been out of the Astros' price range unfortunately.  That's just reality.

Why did we trade for Kikuchi at the trade deadline last year if we are trading Tucker and not signing Bregman? Why would you give up prospects if you plan to tear it down? Those guys we gave up would be nice to have now. Brown has no process or long term plan or process in place clearly. He is so clearly outclassed and outwitted by the other GMs in the league. Second rate owner and GM.

Why would you believe Dana Brown? How many times has he lied to our faces in just 2 years.

"Lemme put it to you this way, Kyle Tucker will be a Houston Astro. We feel strongly about getting it done & I feel he will be an Astro for the rest of his career. We'll get it done." -Astros GM Dana Brown about Tucker's contract.@SeanUnfiltered @SportsTalk790 @moneyonthemic7

This trade is fine. It's even better because of the Macklemore/Astros twitter meltdown.

Enjoy the shitty team we will be putting out and end of playoff runs. You need to expect more out of your teams

I'm a middle aged Houston sports fan. I've learned to set my expectations accordingly.

Four pennants and two championships in six seasons is something I never thought would happen.

If they knew this was the last season with Tuck/Breg, then going all-in with the Kikuchi trade actually makes more sense… and this is coming from someone who absolutely hated that deal when it happened.

Macklemore doesn't understand the fiances of baseball when you are hamstrung with shitty personel decisions and an owner that really is cheap.

When you understand that Tucker was never resigning with the Astros and Bregman's contract is abysmal the minute the ink dries you understand why the Astros are doing what they are doing. Anyone thinking that the 3 guys they gave up for Kilkuchi are going to anywhere as good as Cam Smith doesn't understand baseball at a fundamental level.

Framber needs to be traded next because you can rebuild your farm system and get major league talent that can help you contend this year in the same deal, we just got that in the deal for Tucker.

Clearling off salary and not taking on shitty contracts is how the Astros stay competitive. Really they should have done this with Springer and Correa as well. You had guys ready to replace them, sell high and get another wave of guys that can replace Tucker, Brown, Bregman, etc. Whoever is willing to give you a team discount that is actually good, those are the guys you keep for long term deals and build around them. The problem right now is the $47M that is tied up in Abreu, Montero, and McCullers. None of that is the fault of our current GM.

If the Astros had that money, then this off-season would be completely different, but then again the Astros are not a team that is going to give out massive long term contracts that hinder their future investments, nor should they. If we get serioulsy involved with Santander, a 5-year deal is where I would draw the line. 34 is a good age range to not want 3+ more years committed to a player, unless they are the face of the franchise, you let him retire as a only Astro, ala Bagwell, Biggio, and Altuve.

This is the 1st offseason in 4-5 years that had a plan with easy to pivot to contingencies.

Lighten up, Francis. This move doesn't mean they are tearing it down. It means they are trying to keep the window open and also have good players in the future.  We need one more good bat and we'll be fine.

This is why I am against Bregman, you can get two good bats for his projected price point.

#1027

Sad to see Tuck go, but I understand. Build for the future and hope your talent pipeline continues to pull diamonds out of the rough. The Astros farm system has gotten little respect from the people who evaluate Mlb prospects, despite producing a lot of good pitchers.

The NL next year is going to be an interesting MVP race with Ohtani, Soto and Tucker over there.

#1028

As a Cubs fan, I've got mixed feelings about this trade.  On one hand, it's great to get a player who immediately becomes the best player on the team (assuming the Cubs move Bellinger as rumored).  And Chicago needed lefty power if they do, in fact, trade Bellinger.

OTOH, unless they can extend Tucker, it's probably a one-year rental.  I also think Cam Smith is going to be a good player at some point.  But to get someone like Tucker, it was going to take a prospect like Smith.

Don't be shocked if Paredes, a dead pull hitter, goes for 30+ dingers with that short leftfield distance in Minute Maid.

I'd say this one is TBD

Do you mean before or after the good bat we just traded for a bag of marbles? Because we needed more than one before this bullshit

#1030

Tucker is the best player on the Cubs with or without Bellinger.  Bellinger is also a fucking bitch.

A bag of marbles might have been more productive than Kyle Tucker was during the last two postseasons.

I think you're right -- just meant that Bellinger was probably the only other player on the roster even potentially in that conversation.

To think we had Tucker's replacement lined up only for our shitty manager at the time to talk the owner out of the solid acquisition of Contreras for Urquidy. Then we scrambled and gave up W. Abreu for a player that Dusty refused to play. This is why you don't let fucking managers and owners dictate personnel moves.

Tucker in Copperstown without an Astro hat pisses me off.

Sell the team if you can’t keep one home grown player like Tucker. We will be chasing the Mariners for a wild card spot.

Owner just confirmed we are a second class team. Will be fine when Yordan is wearing Yankee pin stripes.

I'm glad we have an owner who won't sign players to long term deals. They rarely work out.
Agreed. The shortsightedness of some people here offends me lol

Was talking about Crane today with a friend and he mentioned how we have one of the poor billionaire owners.

He's so poor he can't even defer a few hundred million dollars for 20-30 years.

Losing the #2 and  #5 draft picks from the 2015 draft in the matter of days definitely marks a turning point…

But miss the days when we had 2 top 5 first round picks (but not the days that it took to “earn” those picks).

I also miss the days when we had two picks in the first 5 rounds…

Lifelong Astros diehard here, but I might have to find a new team with a less annoying fanbase.

I'd have been much more pissed at keeping Tucker and letting him walk for nothing this offseason than actually getting value for him now.
