Arenado is still the better defender at third

Agreed but I feel like I read he's open to going to first. Frankly between him and Parades I'm good with either playing 1B/3B

Yikes, that's 42m over 3 years in salary plus 50m deferred. He's 33, so no guarantee he's actually worth it for the next 3 years. Lance costs 35m the next 2 years, Pressley is 14m, so they would cover about half of Arenados cost by sending them out.

I don't see why they want to get him if they just got Paredes to play third for a much cheaper cost over the next 3 years. I would rather see them sign Walker as a free agent with no cost in players and find another OF or two. Unless STL is including one of their Outfielders in the deal, I don't think it's worth the cost.

I think it's STL willingness to eat or absorb money (Press, etc) that makes it a fit

I'd prefer Walker and Santander

Which probably means we will get Maldy and Myles Straw

For sure. Presley isn’t enough. Unless they want to include an OF as well and solve both our problems for a net of 3/75 (after they take back Presley) for Arenado, which would be cool I guess. Then, you could trade Framber strictly for prospects or keep him and figure you have at least a conceivable chance at a pennant.
Altuve, Yordan, Paredes, Diaz, Lars N, Arrenado, Chas, Pena, Meyers is a better lineup than what we trotted out there most days last year.
Costs 100M which is cheaper than last years lineup. And we’d have picked up some salary relief and top prospect in minor leagues. If that’s all we did that would be an ok off season.

Walker and Santander and this team fucks. Like, best batting order in years:

Altuve, Yordan, Walker, Santander, Diaz, Paredes, Chas, pena, Meyers.
Thats better than any lineup since 19 I think. If Chas has a bounce back year and meyers and pena combine to be a composite league average.

Santander to the Astros is a pipe dream. He's going to the Yankees of course.

Who you going to trust more than Baerga?  And someone translating his Spanish at that?
have faith.

Bring back ensberg or truby to play 3rd.

We are getting Max Kepler and Nolan Arenado very soon.

We're gonna get him Arenado and Bregman so that we have 4 3B 2 DH a P a C and 0 OF

Meh

Just looking through some predictions for contracts on these guys for fun:

Walker: some say 3 years for 50-75m, or a 1 year 20-27m deal. Seems like a lot, but I do like the short term option for flexibility.

Santander: 5 years 88-150m or something longer that spreads out the cost more. He's 30, so anything beyond 4-5 years is going to be during his decline. Still worth it if they can get him to replace Tucker.

I just don't think they have the available cash to sign 2 guys at that salary. Until they move other contracts, they are kinda stuck looking for bargains. That Abreu 3rd year still stings, as that money would likely get you Walker for a 1 year rental.

I can see the STL deal being appealing because you move the other money at the same time, and potentially get an OF with a couple years of control. That would plug 2 holes at once, shift cash around nicely, and provide some future flexibility. I'm not sure what prospect would need to go to STL in that deal, but it would be nice to get it all done at once. I hope one of those paths work out at least, and we don't end up with some shit like Grichuk and Gallo.

Also calling Tucker a Hall of Famer is really over valuing him as a player.

ZIPS has him at >100 WAR but ok.  Maybe he gets hit by a beer truck tomorrow

Maybe he will really really like Malort

Arenado huh?  108 and 101 ops+ the last 2 years.  Probably won't be as bad as Abreu I guess.

If we shed Pressly and the Cardinals eat some more of his contract (in addition to what Rockies are covering) and it's short term it's a financially viable move

nm, misread it.  Tucker is not projected for 100

Wouldn’t think so. What is it- like 60 or 70?  That’s would make him a borderline in or out.

I'd have been much more pissed at keeping Tucker and letting him walk for nothing this offseason than actually getting value for him now.

If this was all we were going to get for him in return we would have been better off trading him at the trade deadline but hey man you do you...

How is it not a good return? Do you have a history that shows a 1 year rental that got more? You got back an all star that can start at either corner spot and is under control until 2028.  A solid arm that could be a 3/4 starter and 1st round pick last year that signed for over $5million, the Astros entire pool last year was $5.9 million.

This is a good trade today and could be an excellent trade in a couple of years.

I don’t know what more anyone could have expected.

Hard pass.

Why?

I don't think you'd get more for him at the trading deadline since he'd be a half-season rental at that point and I much prefer going into the 2025 season without all the drama around Tucker's contract situation. I am at peace with this deal and optimistic--we could not afford another Springer/Correa situation with the player walking without any assets returned to our system.

100% agree

The problem with waiting til the deadline is if we are good they won't trade him.

Doing it now takes out any risk of forcing them to keep him the rest of the season and letting him walk.

It was the correct move.

Not gonna pay a 1B that especially when we just let Tuck go for a similar amount t.

Kepler and Verdugo are 2 cheap corner OF options that have good upside.  I prefer Verdugo but both make sense if Houston spends all their other money on 1B or SP.

Not to mention putting a lot of faith in the injury gods.

I am warming up with Verdugo, we need both of them. Verdugo can likely play against R/L, but Kepler would likely be a strong side platoon guy.

I'd feel immensely better about the OF situation with Verdugo, Chas, and Kepler. Then you could use Dezenzo as the platoon partner with Kepler. Meyers can be the 5th OF.

Counterpoint to Verdugo…have you ever seen his face? It is immensely punchable and I don’t think I can watch that for 162+

I think if you sign one FA that requires draft compensation then they should just go crazy with it.

Arenado looks done to me,  His back is so fucked that he looks like me out there.

Yeah not sure about taking on Arenado to play 1B. But then again somehow the Astros were a good team last year even though a 100 OPS+ from 1B would be an improvement.

And getting rid of Linzy Singleton on Astros Twitter is a net positive

Arenado would probably want Singleton to give up 28.  Wonder if they will retire Singleton's jersey at 28 or his new number.

arenado has posted two consecutive sub-.800 seasons and had 39 xbh in 2024 to bregman’s 58 in almost exactly the same number of AB, in a season most of us considered sub-par for bregman.

Yeah, no thanks.

Astros don’t seem to recognize the difference between bringing in a guy who is 32 and late in his prime (like McCann and Brantley) vs bringing in a guy 34+ who has already shown clear signs of decline (like Beltran and Abreu).

But those guys take 3 year deals don't you see?
