Heard something interesting this morning on the drive to work. The hosts on XM84 stated that only two position players have received FA contracts for more than 2 years. Adames and Soto.
It appears that players entering their 30s are not getting the deals they once got. Good for teams to figure it out. Bregman fucked up big time.
Wut.

We signed a position player to a deal longer than 2 years.

Pretty sure Oneill and Kim were longer also.

Cuban OF Kevin Alvarez officially signed with the Houston Astros, their top player of the class.Bonus deal: $2,000,000. For many scouts, the most complete hitter in the entire class.

Might have miss heard what he was saying, easily could have been only 2 deals longer than 5 years. Maybe I was focused on the reports that the Cubs are looking for a one or two year deal with Bregman.

I'm only getting -115 on both on my book.   Need to make a trip to Vegas I suppose.

We could have had the same for this year. It’s the following 7 seasons that would have been the killer

If he comes back on a 3 year ~75m deal with opt-outs each year, that would be pretty great for the Astros. I'm hoping that happens, just like what happened to Boras' big free agents last year. Short term prove it deal, but ultimately avoiding 50% of what would have been a possibly ugly contract in 4 years.

Man, you got to give it up. The Astros have a 3B for next year.

Paredes can play left field for a year or two until Bregman bounces! Crane might go into the tax for a guy like Bregman on a short deal! It could happen 😜

He can WANT whatever he says; but until he finds a suitor, reality is kicking that notion in the nuts.

I’m just laughing that nobody is interested in giving him a long term deal. He massively miscalculated his value instead of just taking a deal with the city and team that loves him

Sure, he's never played the OF in his professional career, so lets move him out there for a guy that obviously doesn't want to be here.

OFFICIAL: We’ve acquired OF Myles Straw, cash, and international bonus signing pool space for the 2025 period from the Guardians in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Straw won the Gold Glove Award in 2022.

The Astros payroll is paying 71.3 million. 30% of the 237 million dollar luxury tax cap to 4 players with minimal to no contribution to the 2025 team. Jose Abreu (30M), Rafael Montero (11.5), Cristian Javier (12.8) and Lance McCullers (17M)

Throw in their 2 back end pen guys at 19M and 15M plus the backup catcher at 6M. 111.3M…46% of the cap on 4 non contributors, 2 bullpen dudes and a backup catcher

Wooooooof…knew it was bad but had to examine the damage. Good news is, there is a fuck ton of room next season. I wonder if there is a play with a current free agent to take a back loaded deal with less AAV next year and more moving forward, also seems to make a Framber extension a bigger possibility. Will be interesting to see play out

jose abreu is on the books at 19.5M and pressly at 14M so you invented an extra 11.5M there.
