Going to Madison, Alabama would suck, but having the Rocket City Trash Pandas in the AL West would be badass.

Yes, the race to the bottom is more compelling than the race for the title. Only 7 times has the title come down to the last match of the season, and the top 2 teams have never faced each other in a final match.

Biggest fear for 2025

How much worse can those HEB commercials get without Tuck, and Breggy. The idea that Pena, LMJ can carry that cast…….God help us.

Tucker could be replaced by a cardboard cutout and no one would notice.

Not as bad as not having an HEB.

my 18-team fantasy football dynasty league does this. It's a fun twist on ff.

The Athletic lists Mike Yastrzemski as a possibility to be traded this spring.  He would be good:  contract is $9.25M, hits left, 110 OPS+, 2.1 WAR, plays good defense.

Throws lefty, 2ER in 1 IP last year, so he can turn their switch hitters around in a blowout because fuck them.

The analytics on Graveman are:

2021 Astros—didn't win World Series

2022 Astros—win WS without Graveman

2023 Astros—didn't win WS

My reply:  Astros lost all of that talent, and they still take up your baseball bandwidth.  LFG!!!

I will always cheer for George and Showrea, unless they give me a reason not to.  Breggy could have stayed, so it’s different.

Edited by Iceman

They all could have stayed if they really wanted to

Bregman is doing the same thing Correa did...just 2 yrs older.

Correa turned down 5/160 from Astros....signed 3yr 105M with Twins. Opted out after yr 1 and then signed 6yr 200M....so getting 235M over 7 years

I bet Bregman is probably going to opt out unless he goes full Abreu and try to pull the same shit next year and see if someone will bite and give him a 5 yr high priced contract

Yeah, next year is another shitty year for 3rd base FAs led by Eugenio Suarez and Max Muncy ($10M club option). Urshela, Rojas, Berti, Moncada round out the list.

Basically the same list as this year (plus Suarez and Muncy) because they all suck and only got 1 year deals.

Yaz would be a very good strong side platoon in LF or RF. Just straight up platoon the OF.

Gamel, Trammel, Yaz

Dezenzo, Meyers, McCormick

until one of them show they can be an everyday OF.

This.

And I'm fine with them not wanting to. It's a business.

My biggest fear is our OF mess turning into a third place finish in the division.

erm ackshually.....more like 3.5/4 year difference.

Correa didn't turn 28 until Sept 22 2022 so he was playing most of that season for the Twins as a 27 year old. Bregman turns 31 on March 30, three days after the Red Sox season opener. Correa's situation afforded him more leverage at that age than Bregman. But yeah I think he's betting on himself to kick ass in 2025 and eyeing an opt-out next offseason with a bigger payday.

Sorry to see Bregman go, but basically fuck him. At his age the Astros would’ve been fools to sign him to a contract longer than 6 years. Maybe even fools at 6 years. Or maybe it’s all Boras’ fault.

Maybe Bregman will put up killer numbers thus year. If so, good for him. But I doubt it.

The pressure will be on to prove a top 5 contract AAV is warranted.

That kind of money should demand 2019 Bregman numbers not 2024.

If he opts out and signs a 5/150 after a good season he still comes out ahead.

Present day value on his contract is 32M. With taxes and stuff like that it’s only a slight upgrade at essentially 6/180. Comes with downside risk. Alex just wasn’t well that interested in being here. It’s his right. Bums me out a bit that he felt that way, but I’m not sad he didn’t sign with us for 6/160 or 165 or whatever our final offer was after they said they upped it a little bit.

per nightengale ...

Alex Bregman will have $20 million of his $40 million annual salary deferred each year.

Deferred to when?

How does that all work with salary cap?

According to spotrac, Bregman's LT is $31,705,000 for this season. So, $20M is deferred but $11M and change still count against the tax, even though he is taking in $20M this season to real salary.

I think there’s a reasonable chance he does. He basically needs to be worth about 4-5 war / year (though that contract makes it somewhat difficult to assess performance value, given the options and deferred money). So if he produces, say, 5, 4, and 3 war seasons in ‘25-‘27, the Red Sox are probably happy. That doesn’t seem terribly unlikely.

He's top 5 in MLB salary per year though now.  He's not worth that.

My guess is he has a one year bounce back, opts out, gets the big contract, and then is a negative for the team that gives to him.

I do find it hilarious that he refused to take a paycut on paper for this season from the Astros, then takes a huge one from the Red Sox in terms of 2025 dollars.

Yeah but it’s a 1/2/3 year deal. All those guys that signed 10/300 would be making way more than 40M if they signed a 1/2/3 year deal.

Holy shit, Devers press conference today was 🔥.

Reporter 1 - "If they asked you to DH, you wouldn't do it."

Devers - "No."

Reporter 2 - "Can you expound on that?"

Devers - "I play third."

Yeah, this is going to be a disaster.

The contrast between Devers and Altuve is obvious.

(Altuve's the bad guy, though.)
