I agree, even though he's 2024 draftee, he should fly through the minors. They should try hard to get Paredes signed long term, so that way Williams can concetrate on RF. There is now great incetive to bring him up if he's ready early, because he wins ROY, you get draft pick compensation. We need to replace picks we lost to the "cheating" and horrible FA decisions.

You had to go there… and remind me that Martin Maldonado got more ABs than Yanier and Yanier only saw action in 2/3rds of the games in the 2023 season….

Minor league deal...invite to spring training

2nd baseman

10:16pm: It’s a non-roster deal with an invite to Spring Training, Alexander reports.

10:07pm: The Astros are in agreement with Brendan Rodgers on a one-year contract, reports Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. The signing is pending a physical. Colorado non-tendered the former Gold Glove winner in November.

Rodgers had spent his entire career with the Rockies. Colorado drafted him out of high school with the third overall pick in 2015. He was one of the game’s top prospects for a few seasons, though he never developed into the impact hitter expected at the time.

Brendan Rodgers makes a ton of sense if the plan is Altuve playing 100+ in left. Immediately improves the defense. .265/.320/.415 with 15-18 bombs and gold glove defense at second ain’t bad

Altuve- LF

Paredes- 3B

Yordan- DH

Walker- 1B

Yainer- C

Pena- SS

Rodgers- 2B

Chas/Jake- CF

Chas/Gamel- RF

Dubon/Dezenzo- UTIL

still too damn righty heavy and that outfield is still horrendous but I see the vision. Also lots of optionality with Yordan, Altuve, Parades and Dubon able to mix and match defensively. Lefty OF, back rotation starter and another RP and this team would really be cooking but doubt any of that happens at this point

Maybe he's due!

Rodgers at Coors Field in his career: .306/.361/.465 with 24 HRs, 119 RBIs in 910 plate appearances.

Rodgers on the road in his career: .227/.272/.356 with 21 HRs, 78 RBIs in 919 plate appearances.

If Altuve is your full time LF Rogers mashes LHP and Guillerme is his platoon partner against RHP?  Probably just Dana collecting more trash.

That’s a solid 69 win team right there.

That roster only gets to 1st base.

This is a down year.

I feel with the Abreau $ holding us down and wanting to keep under luxury tax, our only strategy is to hope for our island of Tommy Johned toys to get back to 100% and we strike at least silver on our trash heap finds.

Realistically a division win and playoff appearance is what we should be shooting for.

A trip to the Division series appearance would be an overachieve.
Anything after that would a significant overachieve / lightning in a bottle kind of stuff.

Feels like you have to sit and hope that a rookie comes up and has a Diaz like year.

Also cost us a draft pick by not letting him win ROY

Eh/ division title is most likely result.
as I say every year when I write my annual I hate (love) mlb playoffs it really is a crapshoot man. Anything can happen.

Dezenzo, whitcomb, Matthews, Melton and Cam are 5 decent chances at it. Just need 1 to break through. You can absolutely look at pedigree and performance for all of them and believe it to be possible. When you have 5 chances you would think it’s plausible that 1 should make it happen.

Some morning updates:

-Garcia has thrown “a few” times off the mound.

-Ort (oblique) could take “a little bit of time” in his recovery.

-Melton is dealing with mild soreness in lower back and isn’t working on field.

-Altuve’s first game action of spring will be in LF.

I completely agree, and why moving Tuve to LF opens up more options than running Meyers Gammel and Chaz out every night.

Altuve is bad at 2B, getting worse and signed for 4 more years. He can’t play dh because of Yordan. He’s too small for 1B. LF is the only thing that makes sense longterm.

Not playing 1st base has nothing to do with his size. Its a difficult position to play and requires high level of skill. Altuve could be 6'3" that doesn't mean he can play 1B.

No, he is too small regardless of the other skills.  The number of errant throws would skyrocket just because he can't physically reach a lot of throws a typical 1st basemen can.

If you are talented enough to play 2B athletically you are almost always talented e Pugh to do the stuff you are talking about to play 1B. Unless you are 5’5’’ tall in which case it’s a complete non starter and we don’t need to talk about, speculate or ponder any of those “high level of skills” you are talking about and we can say he can’t play 1B bed he’s a midget. You don’t need any reason beyond that even if they exist.

Probably. Shoulder surgery. Marginal to begin with. He’s supposed to be good to go but I wouldn’t light a candle for him or anything.

it would also be nice for Diaz to have a ‘23 Diaz like year. OPS went from .846 to .766 year over year (60% increase in PA).

I agree he is too small and that eliminates him from contention. But I feel that people always want to put guys at first base because they think it's an easy position. Its not.

I agree 100% with you on that.  It doesn't matter how good the rest of the infield is if the 1st basemen sucks.

If we're depending on JP France to do more than pitch for a couple of weeks because a starter is on the 7 or 10 day DL then we're in trouble.

He needs to get his fly ball rate back up. Last year his power numbers were down because he hit too many ground balls.

Most balls are long hopped these days anyways so I got no issue with him playin 1B actually.

Hi Ron Washington from Moneyball.

It is literally the easiest position on the field to play.

Yep. 1B and LF in that order require almost no skill to play. You catch the ball when it is thrown or hit to you. Now Walker is legitmately a bad-ass defensive 1B, but he's not a great athlete by any stretch of the imagination. The only reason LF is more difficult is because every park is different, whereas at 1B you have the same dimensions every game.

You have to have good hands to be good at 1st base.  Not everyone has good hands.  See Abreu, Jose.

astros can't mess up this replacement ....

️The Astros are going to miss Kyle Tucker's bat and glove.

🎶The clubhouse may miss Tucker's DJing more.

Spencer Arrighetti: "Tuck was the vibes guy, for sure."

It sounds like Mauricio Dubon is the leader in the clubhouse to be the next Astros DJ.

Based on the longevitiy of the DJs, this is excellent news.

As opposed to the positions where bad hands are preferred?

FG has the positional adjustments as:

C +12.5
SS + 7.5
CF + 2.5
2B +2.5
3B +2.5
RF -7.5
LF -7.5
1B -12.5
DH -17.5

Basically that’s the adjustment they get for their offense based off their position.
