IMO, the machines are much more likely to be tampered with by folks in the chain of custody than Joe Public Saboteur.  What's needed is a system that can be audited to ensure the vote totals reported to the County Clerks / Secretary of State are correct.  There are many ways it could be done.  As per the link I already shared, existing electronic voting machines already have the technology in them to facilitate it.

Yeah. It was pretty weak that the latest Kansas primary had precinct or counties faxing in numbers to the state and the person receiving the fax basically re-typing it in a spreadsheet.  Even if you assume no intentional total changing, the chances of a mistake have to high.
