October 14, 20241 yr Popular Post Some observations... It's fucking wild that the Georgia game will only be the 3rd AP top 5 matchup in Austin. I don't think anyone really thought we were #2 in 2006 I think the pollsters were just being nice to us as defending champs so you could argue this is the biggest game in Austin since 1970 when we stomped on the Hogs the year after Nixon's game of the century. We really have been in shitty conferences.... (till now) 4 in the Big 12 in 28 years (all Oklahoma) 4 in the SWC in 60 years (3x Ark, 1x A&M) 1 in the SEC in 1 year Non-Conference has been the bulk 7 vs Big 7/8 (6x Oklahoma, 1x Mizzou, never in a bowl) 6 vs Independents (2x Notre Dame (f ND), 1x Miami, Penn St, Navy, & Syracuse) 5 vs SEC (2x Alabama, 1x Auburn, Ole Miss, & Tennessee) 3 vs PDF (2x USC, 1x Washington) 2 vs Big Ten (all Ohio State) Remember this Saturday is really fucking rare especially in Austin. Hopefully we will see this sort of thing happen more reguarly given we are in a conference with teams that represent 65% (21/32) of our all time top 5 matchups. October 14, 20241 yr Quick tally, I might be off -- in only 4 of those losses we were the higher ranked team.
October 14, 20241 yr The '06 team wasn't bad. If Colt doesn't get dinged against K State we win that game and play for a B12 title and have a better shot against aggy to finish 11-1. Still went 10-3 and finished in the top 15.

October 14, 20241 yr I know that this is referencing AP, but Tech 08 was #5 in the coaches poll/#6 AP. That was as brutal a schedule that year as anything in the SEC. #1 OU, #11 Mizzou, #7 OSU, #6 Tech in consecutive weeks.

October 14, 20241 yr Am I missing something? We played Michigan as #1, right? Or who was #1? Georgia?

Not even the rankings, but playing your biggest rival (who was ranked #1) and ended with playing a team who would nuke their own program just for a win against you, on the road, at night. And everyone just sort of forgets we only won that OKST game 28-24. It was a nerve-wracking afternoon game.

October 14, 20241 yr Pretty interesting information, thanks OP. Confirms my gut feel that since the mid70’s anyway (when I started paying attention to Texas football) we’ve lost more than we won these types of games, but not by much.
October 14, 20241 yr That was a nice little 20ish year run from 62 to 84. 12-5-1. Then wheel disconnects from wagon. Thank you VY.

Granted but it's still surprising that 50% of our top 5 matchups have been in that rickety pile at the state fair. 16 Cotton Bowl 8 Road 4 Non-Cotton Bowls 3 Home 1 Neutral (reg season non-OU)

If Gavrilo Princip hadn't assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 and sparked World War I, the Unites States might never have taken advantage of the power vacuum created by the Great War, and never evolved into an international power with a huge population growth, which might have meant that Colt's parents had never been born, and then Colt would not have played in the '06 game at all, which Texas would then have lost handily. October 15, 20241 yr It would have been pretty easy to work the roommate angle into all of that text.
