2024 - 2025 Dallas Mavericks Season Thread - This time we're not happy to just be here.

Featured Replies

It's almost here. We host Wemby on Thursday 10/24 for the season opener - odd start time of 6:30p.

Special games of note

Thanksgiving Wednesday 11/27 6:30p - We host NYK, will Brunson actually play this time?

Christmas Day 1:30p - We host the Timberwolves.  Someone's going to be looking for revenge.

New Year's Day 7pm - We're in Houston.

Saturday Jan 25, 2025 4:30p - In Dallas, first game against the Celtics.

Thursday Feb 6, 2025 6:30p - In Boston.  Has Kyrie exorcised those demons?

We start a brutal stretch of games immediately after the ASB.  Thirteen games from Feb 21 to Mar 16 without more than a day's break in between.  Our opponents during that stretch? NO, GS, LAL, Cha, Mil 2x, Sac, Mem, Phx, SAS 2x, Hou, Phi.

On the flipside we have a decent last 10 games to end the season.  NYK, Orl, Chi, Bkn, Atl, LAC 2x back to back, LAL, Tor, Mem.

The season hinges on:

- How healthy will Luka be going into the playoffs?

- Can Kyrie stay healthy?

- Does the Klay experiment work?

- Will our team collectively take a step forward and be able to maintain the cohesiveness displayed last season post ASB through the playoffs?

- Will THjr be our third scorer?*

- Are QG and Naji > THj and DJj?

I'm excited to see:

- Individual improvement:  namely Lively and especially Hardy.  Towards the end of last season I saw glimpses of Hardy that reminded me of Brunson right before he went on his playoff run.

- Nico: He's a wizard and what I appreciate most is his decisiveness to act when he knows something doesn't work or he sees something he wants.

- Excited probably isn't the word.  Anxious.  I'm anxious to see if Jason Kidd can steer this ship.

*lol so glad that's behind us

Dirk going to LA for Luka’s debut. Probably the biggest FU yet to this front office.

Isn’t trading your star player and having all your good players injured and then raising ticket prices the plot of major league II?

My random thoughts:

You had me with the THJ third scorer.

I don’t love our depth at SF/PF

Would love to see Hardy get more minutes and make a big leap as a legit 6th man type

I am tempted to buy a Lively jersey but that usually doesn’t work out well for the player so I won’t put the jinx on him

Does Maxi have anything to contribute or is he washed? Same for Spencer

I hope Klay can regain some of his glory and be a killer from 3

What shape/condition will Luka be at the start of the season

Two things:

1) This is the second most talented Mavs roster ever (behind 87-88). Like that team, the best two players are head cases, but in much more benign and far less toxic. This team also doesn’t have to face the best Lakers team ever to get to the finals or the 87-88 Celtics if they make it.

2) MFFL

TV Option is here.

I don't think Luka's a head case, just immature.

The MavsTV thing is great.  Unfortunately Austin's not included, so not only do we not get an over the air station to broadcast these games but we can't even stream from MavsTV.  Ironically MavsTV is charging $125 per season to stream whereas NBA League Pass only costs $90 to stream (one team only).

Good value. Hopefully he makes a leap with more minutes and it becomes great value.

Interesting. Also gives him a very tradeable contract as well.

Very excited to see QG bully guys on the perimeter. Wish we could have locked up his extension but if he plays his way into a fat deal it probably means Dallas has gone pretty deep into playoffs again.

I’m going to try to figure out a way to find a stream of one of those HD channels, but SURELY they could find an Austin HD station to carry it.

Totally forgot we picked him and Naji Marshall up this offseason. Damn this could be a fun year.

Game day for defending western conference champs. Let’s make this the first win of 60.

Excited to see Luka's next level. This is by far the best team they've put around him.

fuck reggie miller, fuck chris paul, fuck the spurs, MFFL.

You really appreciate Kleiber's role in a game like this - to give you quality bench minutes and play interior defense well.I used to get frustrated because of his obvious limitations, but he's really very good at what he does well, and he's good enough to hang in there at the rest.

Jaden Hardy improvement in shot selection is super encouraging. Very happy to have gotten that contract done before season started.

some beautiful passes tonight

Fucking amazing!! Love making Wemby look foolish

That got out of hand in a hurry. Positive that I’m seeing is we are way deeper than last year. Hopefully that means a somewhat reduced workload and usage rate for Luka.

No offense to THJ, but having guys in that position who can hit the open shots Luka creates with some regularity is pretty great.

Hey jerrah, this is how you get better in the offseason

I wonder what type of return the Spurs will get for Wemby when he asks out in 3 years.

Still will always love Timmy, but yea, we had reached our ceiling with him being a major part of the rotation.

Look, Wemby is a problem and even on an off night he is unique.
BUT - man, is there a player in the NBA with more upside than Derrick Lively? How did we even get this guy at 12? He's physically gifted, his skills seem to improve game to game and his hustle and intuition are off the charts.

Agree about lively. Lives up to his name.

15 pts, 11 rebounds, and 6 ASSISTS?! What a stud.

For sure Wemby is gonna be a problem for sure so I’m enjoying it right now

He’s great and has so much promise. Also, if you play your whole career with Luka, does that boost your career stats and earnings by 25%?

The amount of cutting and movement from Grimes, Marshall, and Klay is so refreshing. Felt like it was the least Luka-centric we've seen our offense and despite not hitting shots at a good clip in the first half, the offense looked pretty smooth. Great hustle on defense as well.

A little concerning with defensive rebounding and the free throws are still a problem.

Very exciting overall.

From the first half of last season to now feels like we just skipped to the other side of one of those 4-5 year “trust the process” building cycles. Just massively, radically upgraded, seemingly without a loss of chemistry or damage to the culture.

Nico is The Man.

Having a guy that can take 12 3s a game and make half of them is going to make the regular season easier.

THJ used to get these shots. THJ.

Klay is gonna get so many good looks.

So our only option to watch the Mavs tonight is to subscribe to the Mavs app?

Or watch on antenna.

Naji is a huge downgrade from DJjr in almost every way but especially noticeable tonight was his terrible perimeter defense.  He also over two games has shown a low basketball IQ so put that together with PJs low IQ and we're finding ourselves on a lot of trouble.  Bad fouls, ill advised shots, leaving the wrong guy open, missing assignments on transition defense, it was bad from those two tonight.

The foul discrepancy was frustrating too.

I ordered a $30 HD antenna from amazon and set it up on my samsung. Getting the tv to scan and find the channels took a bit of trial and error but I’m pretty sure I got ‘em. Channel 29-1 KFAA is coming through.

Production test is tomorrow night mavs vs jazz.

I added the mavs schedule to my iCal from this link.

I’m liking the new management group.

Wanted to keep track of ref crews over-asserting themselves last season post-ASB when there was a noticeable difference in how physicality was being called.  Gonna see if I can keep this up.

They called 28 fouls on us to PHX's 17.  We shot 18 FTs, PHX had 37.

There was a PHX challenge on a blocked shot that overturned a foul call late in the 4th based on the defender getting ball before the lower part of his body made contact with the shooter.
