During Covid, I Zoom interviewed Paul Goldschmidt for one of my classes about how he invests.  I opened his Baseball Savant page to introduce him and noticed the "Random highlight" button, set it to HR, and asked him to name the type of pitch and location before I hit play.   We did it 4-5 times and he acted like it was about as difficult as remembering the names of his kids.

Greg Maddux talks about this phenomenon in this clip. Cliff’s notes: Maddux gave up a meaningless HR to Bagwell in July because he knew that Bags would remember that pitch when they met in the playoffs.  Sure enough, Bagwell was looking for that pitch and whiffed on three straight change-ups.   Maddux’s exact quote - “hitters remember success.”

Is Nick Pivetta fucked?  Dude should probably have taken the QO of 21.5M or whatever.  I would think no team is going to pay him more than that on a per year basis, and I get while he wants a longer term contract I would also think no team wants to give up drat pick + international pool $$ or whatever to sign this dude.
He is either going to make waaaay less per year than he wanted, or not get signed unless some starter gets hurt during Spring Training?

If a team waits until after the draft to sign him I guess the draft pick compensation part goes away?
Could the Red Sox sign him still to a 1 year deal for like 10M now and lowball the fuck out of him?

Seems like the dumbest decision of the offseason so far was to turn down the QO

Why is this making the rounds again?

this is old news….and possibly fake news.

I tend to agree with bagwell when I heard him on a broadcast not long after this came out questioning 1) a guy willingly giving up a gopher ball regardless of the reason, and 2) to try and set something up that may or may not happen 3 months later?

….and then you have this from ~20 years ago:

You know the contracts are insured, right? He’s not costing the Angels a dime, only a luxury tax hit.

The White Sox announced the signing of Joey Gallo to a minor league contract. The Boras Corporation client will be in camp as a non-roster invitee.

IMO, the fact that he still sucked after Helo talked mad shit about him is definitive, unassailable proof that he's done.

It was the third straight season in which Gallo has had a tough time offensively. His bat has dropped sharply since the Yankees acquired him from the Rangers in a big deadline trade in 2021. Gallo had hit .211/.336/.497 over parts of seven seasons in Texas. Since leaving Arlington, he owns a .165/.289/.384 slash in more than 1200 trips to the plate between four teams.

Unlikely they had a 100% covered policy, not even including premiums of course. It certainly cost them more than a dime.

For someone who says a lot of dumb shit, this might be the dumbest.

@Helobious do you like the Yankees no facial hair policy? Seems pretty outdated. Odor looked pretty weird when he had to shave lol85e17e91c87f3c062c3a16f60f5cf989.jpg

I like it. It’s a privelege to play for the Yankees. It’s not special to play for any other teams, they’re very individualistic, and things like appearance and personal conduct on/off the field mean nothing to them. The Yankees have always represented class and doing things the right way, so no facial hair, and no names on the jerseys fits the team well.

Anthony Rendon bobblehead giveaway this year in Anaheim.

*privilege.

And the long list of FA's who have signed with the Dodgers may refute your bolded statement.

It’s special to make it to the MLB no matter what team. But does anyone give a shit that they play for the Brewers, Dbacks, Rays, etc? Of course not. But being a Yankee actually means something, former players say as much and how different it is. No kid grows up imagining themselves playing on the Padres or the Astros. You grow up dreaming about being on the Yankees.

Edited by Helobious

Every single kid only dreams about playing for the Yankees. Yep sounds right. Sure if you go ask anyone who has ever played will just say it was thier dream to play mlb baseball regardless of team.

I never dreamed of playing for the Yankees. I wanted to play for the Braves or Astros. With probably the Cubs as my 3rd choice (day baseball).

Mike Trout arrived at spring training on Sunday and took part in a meeting with the Los Angeles Angels' coaches, during which they determined the three-time MVP would move from center field to right field in an effort to preserve his body and keep him healthy.

Trout, 33, is seemingly on board.

"I knew it was coming," Trout said before the team's first full-squad workout Monday. "I just wanna be on the field."

Trout has spent his first 14 years as a dynamic center fielder, never winning a Gold Glove but continually turning in spectacular, highlight-reel catches while establishing himself as one of the sport's most dangerous offensive players. Injuries, however, have limited him to 266 of a potential 648 games over the last four seasons.

The Astros are in agreement with Brendan Rodgers on a one-year contract, reports Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. The signing is pending a physical. Colorado non-tendered the former Gold Glove winner in November.

If the Rockies non-tendered him, he's probably going to have a big season.

If you really want to clown the Rockies, read this beauty.

Jordan Beck has the inside track on the Rockies’ right field job, manager Bud Black said this week. The second-year outfielder is “the guy who probably gets the first crack at what you would call everyday at-bats,” Black told Saunders.

Beck is positioned to make an Opening Day roster for the first time in his big league career. Colorado called up the Tennessee product late last April. Beck played regularly in left field over the next few weeks, but he only hit .190 before breaking a bone in his left hand while making a diving catch. He underwent surgery and wound up missing over two months. Beck spent some time in the minors before returning to the MLB team in the middle of August. He continued to struggle after his second call-up, hitting .187/.282/.242 over the season’s final six weeks.

It clearly wasn’t a good rookie season. Beck appeared in 55 games and hit .188/.245/.276 across 184 trips to the plate. He struck out more than 35% of the time while drawing walks at only a 6.5% rate. Hand injuries can impact a hitter’s power, so that may have contributed to his modest output. Beck hit only three home runs with poor exit velocities and a subpar 32.1% hard contact rate.

Beck certainly has greater power upside. Prospect evaluators have credited him with plus raw power in his 6’3″, 225-pound frame. He’s a .284/.380/.509 hitter in nearly 900 minor league plate appearances. The offensive ceiling will largely be determined by how much he develops as a pure hitter. He’ll need to markedly improve upon his rookie-season strikeout and walk numbers. The righty hitter has taken plenty of walks in the minors, but scouts have questioned his elevated swing-and-miss rates since his college days.

It seems the Rockies feel the majors present the best place for that development. Beck only has 39 games of Triple-A experience. He has a full slate of options remaining, so Colorado could start him at Triple-A Albuquerque if they felt that’d be beneficial. Based on Black’s comments, it appears they believe he’s ready for an extended opportunity despite his tough rookie season. Beck tells Saunders that he fought through some mechanical issues with his swing after the injury but is coming into camp at full strength following a typical offseason.

Colorado projects to run a starting outfield of Nolan Jones, Brenton Doyle, and Beck from left to right. Jones is looking to rebound from a .227/.321/.320 showing, a disappointing follow-up to his .297/.389/.542 performance during his first season in Denver. Doyle is one of the biggest bright spots for the organization. He’s a Gold Glove center fielder who hit 23 homers while making major improvements to his plate discipline last season.

Sam Hilliard is lined up as the fourth outfielder, while Sean Bouchard and former top 10 pick Zac Veen could compete for right field work if Beck struggles early in the season. Kris Bryant could still see action there, but he’ll work primarily as a designated hitter after multiple injury-wrecked years.

Has anyone ever done Spring Training? Do you know if the same teams go to cactus and grapefruit every year or do they mix it up.

Always been a bucket list type trip for me. Can’t make it this year but maybe in the next 2-3.

Same teams every year. Go to Arizona though, all the spring training sites are right next to each other in Phoenix. In Florida they are spread across the entire state.

This is the way… even from an Astros fan (who admittedly, has never been to Florida for spring training). But Cactus League is great

And if a music fan, considering planning around: https://www.inningsfestival.com/

that’s what pulled me out there last year for the first time and had a great time

i almost went to that last year, but the problem is that they have the music festival at the start of ST, when the games will feature the guys you want to see batting one time and the majority of the play coming from guys wearing wide receiver numbers.

The festival is two weekends, with the first geared more rock and second more country (at least the last two years). The first weekend of the festival is this weekend. The second weekend is Feb 28-Mar 1.

So agree it’s early and you won’t get to see an extended innings by the big names. But you also miss spring break crowds (although the last weekend in Feb when I went last year was still plenty crowded). And most of the fun of spring training isn’t watching the exhibitions but the practices/back fields.

that said, in the two games I went to, I saw Betts hit a HR, 3 PAs by De La Cruz, Tatis homer off Luis Castillo and Darvish start that game with an immaculate inning.

The best part of ST is seeing if the prospects you’ve been following can hold their own at that level. I creamed myself when George Lombard Jr homered last spring

You'd have a good point if they weren't batting against pitchers wearing WR numbers, too.  The Googles tell me that Lombard's homer that excited you so much was off of the legendary Jimmy Robbins, who had a 6.39 ERA in AAA last season and ended the season playing for the Long Island Ducks.

Are tickets cheap? Preliminary research showed them at $50 and up. I was hoping to walk up for around $20 or less for GA but maybe I’m living in 1997.

Part of the appeal would be to see multiple games a day for 7+ days. But couldn’t do that if I’m getting stung at the box office each time.

Lol. $50 is on the cheaper end. Most Dodger ST tickets are over $100 for example.
