Rhetorical question I know, but can anyone honestly articulate what we are standing up against?

I'm libertarian/conservative.  I didn't vote for Trump.  Right now I'm going through all the emotions, but mostly I'm just sad. Sad, embarrassed, and angry.  It's apparent on its face that Russia invaded Ukraine.  Even if one of my kids is doing the "I'm not touching you I'm not touching you" to the other, when the other hits them, that's on them. Fuck Russia.  For the U.S. this is a terrible look in every way: we look every part of the bully, we're cozying up to Russia/Putin, we're denigrating a democratic partner, we're selling out an ally, we're abdicating any type of leadership role and moral authority, we're taking advantage of the weak and stealing their wealth.  We're so far from the "shining city on the hill" that Reagan described, it's sad.  I'm sad.

And I get why people voted for Trump.  They feel marginalized, overlooked, like the economy left them behind.  They see DEI as quotas reborn and are told that if they're white, male, or straight that they are essentially evil.  Trump tapped into that anger and rage. What I can't square is how they overlook all the stuff above because it's their guy.  "Yeah he's an asshole and he's hurting me, but he's my asshole and he's hurting everyone I hate more."

How, exactly, did Dotard “stand up for America”? Because Z didn’t thank us enough times? Standing up for America would be helping our democratic ally defeat the invading dictator, wouldn’t it Little Marco? As opposed to humiliating him and us for no reason.

Democracy.

he went out of his way to thank every american 2 years ago but trump wasn't president so it doesn't count.

Stood up for America bent over for Putin.

So next steps now, there is no way Zelenskyy stays in office, right?  His relationship with Trump and necessity of U.S. support for Ukraine precludes it.  Playing out the chess game, Ukraine's moves are:

  1. He stays as President and capitulates to Trump's demand for subjugation and sells out mineral rights and accepts whatever shit deal Trump cuts with the Russians.  Or,
  2. He stays as President and remains steadfast in a "fair" deal for Ukraine, and sees Trump sell him out vs. Russia and withdraw all U.S. support going forward.  His only play here would be to backstop U.S. support with EU support, I don't think there is enough to go around to make up the gap.  Or,
  3. He resigns under pressure from the Ukranian parliment.  Either through appointment or election he is replaced by a new personality, probably more malleable to Trump and more friendly.  Takes whatever deal he can get, or as Lindsay Graham says "He knows his place."

Are you fucking serious? Zelenskyy is not going to be pressured to step down.

He was willing to play charades with Trump's fake mineral agreement to buy time to get more support from Europe. But it became immediately clear this morning that wasn't really on the table and there was no hope for continued US support. There is no deal with a Zelenskyy replacement either, unless that replacement was a Putin puppet, but unlike us the people of Ukraine wouldn't stand for that.

I am sure they will make the Saudi leadership step out of their dresses right?  No, of course not.  This wasn't set off by wardrobe selection, this was theater,  entirely planned to be an asshole to him, to make him seem disrespectful in attempt to justify their cozying up to Putin and trying to create peace agreements like an 1800s European colonizer.

If he wore a suit, they would have just latched on to whatever thinly veiled distraction they could manage.  You didn't thank us.  Well you didn't thank us enough.  You campaigned for the guy who beat our guy's ass and helped your country, how fucking dare you!

How many years is it going to take before you realize you’re wasting your time? You’re operating at cross-purposes. If he was attempting to engage in honest, thoughtful, rational discourse then you might have a point. But he’s not. He’s intellectually dishonest. He’s an impulsive contrarian who gets off on the attention from being a fly in the ointment. And he’s not half as smart as he thinks he is if you haven’t caught on to that yet.

I put him on ignore back when he was parroting Trump’s “collusion delusion” catchphrase, that was around 8 years ago now. I’ve got him figured out. Nothing I’ve seen in the years of other people quoting him has revealed anything new to me. He is now exactly who I thought he was then.

He’s a troll. He adds nothing to the conversation other than disruption and distraction. By engaging with him you reward him and help him disrupt and distract. Are you surprised by anything he says? Or does he say exactly what you’d expect him to say because you’ve got him figured out and have for a long time?

Preach, brother.

I find myself just sitting and shaking my head, a lot, these days. it's all I can muster anymore

What we've learned in three years is Russia's military is absolute dogshit.  The EU armed forces would have no problem toting the mail after we leave Ukraine high and dry.

Hell, the EU should cut a deal with Japan and tell them after Russia collapses they can retake Sakhalin.

I'm all for it; I just doubt Europe's resolve once the U.S. drops out.  Easier to just let Russia take Ukraine, Moldova, etc.  They'll grasp their pearls but other than Poland I'd be surprised if they put troops down there to act as peacekeepers. They've already donated their spare gear and are just now spinning up their military industrial base.

I was trying to explain this to someone based on a previous example. The Eu and US did not want the Bosniaks at meetings during the war. So an argument used was They did not dress likes statesman enough. meanwhile the two murderous neighbors, Croatia and Serbia, were allowed in. They dressed like "statesmen."

Maybe Srebrenica would not have happened if we did not care so much about the dress. And the SS uniform was designed by Hugo Boss.

If dress determines this shit I am getting a shirt that says Tech Support.

Nobody ever told them that, they made that shit up in their own head to justify their own hatred for "others." Be aware that when you type something like that most of us see nothing more than idiots with their "Diversity = White Genocide" t-shirts and you lose all credibility in anything you say on the topic.

A new leader will make no difference. The current US regime will accept nothing short of Ukraine giving itself up to Russia. Zelenskyy's best move, in my opinion, is to go to Europe, beg them to please find enough support to help him win the war, then admit Ukraine into NATO. The writing is on the wall, there is no reason whatsoever for any decent European nation to expect anything from the U.S. going forward but bullshit. If Europe can provide victory for Ukraine they can surely muster enough collaboration to stop giving a single shit about what happens over here. We are not an ally to them in any way shape or form anymore and it's clear they need to proceed accordingly.
