Just be gentle. Ojo doesn’t like it rough.

You're missing the key distinction between "gentleman's bet" and any other undefined "bet" or "wager," none of which require that money be involved. The difference is that there's no legally enforceable contract holding participants to it.

Edit:
So, what collateral are you willing to put up as part of this bet? It's got to have some value to you, or there are no stakes. If not money, is it your house, wife, children, pride, honor, internet points, time, labor, or something else?

File a habeas petition in the jurisdiction where I'm detained.  If they ship me off before I can do that then I also claim a violation of the 5th Amendment for lack of due process. My case will go through the courts and, if the courts follow the law (and their most recent opinion), I will be returned.

You sound like a child. How will you know where you’re detained? How will your lawyer know? I’m sure the regime is shaking in their boots at your 5th Amendment claim. Holy shit that’s hilarious. You still think they give a FUCK about you and your rights

I know. What hasn't happened yet is that the case has not reached the end. Gentleman's bet - the courts will order him returned and he will be.

You also can't read or understand legal opinions.

It is possible that they come to the right result -- which to my mind would also include that habeas corpus is not the exclusive remedy here, with its narrow jurisdiction and venue -- but this step on the road is pretty fucking hideous really.  It is unprincipled in numerous ways.

fuck, no, dude. no one here is saying that. but maybe, just maybe, when you're the ONLY one making particular point and there are highly knowledgeable and educated people telling you how and why you are wrong - kindly at first - and then more forcefully when you refuse to listen; it's incumbent on you to at least entertain what they are saying. you seem to refuse to do that. so much to the point that Dad (immamac) had to question your intentions. i dunno what to tell you beyond that.

Great minds and all.

Normalcy bias and lack of imagination is blinding people like rojo as to what is happening and what lies ahead. It’s going to shock a lot of people when the regime fully unveils its fascist plans, but me and others here? Nope, I see it on the horizon

I'll be pedantic if you will: look up the definition of wager. While a gentleman's bet may not wager money, it does wager something. That's what makes it a bet. What distinguishes a gentlemen's bet versus other bets is that it is not enforced by an outside party or agreement. It is strictly on the honor of the participants to fulfill their obligations under the bet.

Where is the law that states you will be returned? While I'm loathe to say it, I actually think the administration has a pretty good point on the whole the judicial branch can't force the executive branch to engage in foreign diplomacy thing. Roberts et al. are going to bite pretty hard on that. And that is why the habeas opinion is so fucking bad.

"On the horizon?"  Dude...the horizon is here. When asked about disappearing US citizens to El Salvador....our fucking dictator SAID HE LOVES THE IDEA.

Quote

Reporter: “El Salvador – The president there said he would be willing to take American citizens in federal prison population. Is that one of the ideas you’re going to be discussing?”

Trump: “I love that … I would be honored to give them. … I have suggested that, you know, why shouldn’t it stop just to people that cross the border illegally? … I think if we could get El Salvador or somebody to take them I’d be very happy with it.”

We don't have to guess, or surmise, or any of that shit.  He fucking TOLD us.

This administration openly intends 1) to grab American citizens, and 2) ship them to foreign prisons beyond the reach of US courts.  Nevermind that it's horrific and unconstitutional enough to do so with regards to non-criminal aliens.  The Regime is going to treat US citizens the same way.

Your only remaining means of defense is....the ultimate and final means of defense.  That's what "beyond the reach of the rule of law" necessarily means.

I am starting to believe that the reason the administration is fighting so hard not to return this guy is because he is dead.

No other position makes sense.  Normalcy would dictate that you would want to correct an obvious wrong if you could.  They cant because the dude is dead.

Jesus. Fine.  If I win you have to come on here and say, "Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-PTANG."

You keep carrying on about bets but that’s just a distraction from the fact that a man was legally living in America, married to a woman who is a U.S. citizen, father to an Autistic child who is also a U.S. citizen, and he was deported by the U.S. government to a prison in a different country that we have no control over, without notice or due process, and even though our government admits it was a mistake, they then tried to say he might be a gang member because he wore a Chicago Bulls hoodie, as if that somehow justifies their mistake, and their general attitude is sorry not sorry.

Even if you are somehow right and this man eventually gets returned to his family in the U.S., the fact this happened in the first place is scary and shows how far America has fallen.

Quit talking about bets. Bets usually have a winner and a loser but this situation only has losers. There is no outcome that would make the people in this discussion feel remotely good about any of it.

True. It just occurred to me that this is the first time in my life where a POTUS has gone after the legal profession in the manner Trump has. What is particularly sobering is how almost normal it feels.

Yep.  Remember how all the Trumpers wouldn't shut up about how we all need to be armed, because "that's the last line of defense against an authoritarian state - disarming the public was how them Nazis were able to run roughshod and kill all those people!"???  Turns out, the fuckers were right about that.  They just didn't tell us that they were the authoritarian state we'd have to worry about.

We're getting pretty goddamned close to "last line of defense" territory.

One position that would make sense is that backing down would pop this little trial balloon they've floated, asserting their authority to do whatever the fuck they want.

Someone needs to take her out and dye her hair purple so that shallow fuckers who are so gotdam wound up about stupid shit like that (e.g., Johnny Sack, aka Frank Drebin, but not him per se, as he's a fucking christofascist to the bone) won't give that evil cunt the time of day.

Prolly should be a separate thread, but what type of "arms" should a person who knows fuck-all about guns (me) look to invest in?  Fired my first non-pellet gun at a range during my bachelor party about 8 years ago.  Wife will be a hard sell to keep them in the house, but desperate times...

never hurts to have a shotgun or two handy for inside intruders. in that situation you don't want to worry too much about aim. beyond that, whatever you're comfortable that you're not gonna accidentally shoot yourself or your loved ones with. and no, this is entirely the appropriate thread for this conversation

Not the system per se, but definitely some of the actors.

Pretty good thread here, but it ends with a little bit too much faith in "the streets" for how I'm feeling right now (she's an activist).

The essay she writes based on this thread is worth reading if you've got 10 minutes. There are a couple of interesting points she raises in the essay mentioned at the end (https://www.cawshinythings.com/fascism-minus-kampf/) I haven't considered or heard before, especially regarding perceptions people had about the economy during his first term.

My husband and I are looking to get a couple Glocks. We have a shotgun already. I’m not a gun guy, but through some research found that a Glock is a good beginner gun

yeah that's the Reddit consensus I saw for a low recoil starter handgun.  Wife who has never even touched a gun will need something almost toy-like to learn.

And the shotgun is def on the list.  Hunter buddies have been telling me that for years - pistol-grip shotgun with buckshot for general home defense.

I doubt they know or care if he's alive or dead. It's more because if you let one person back in, it can create a legal opportunity to let more people back in or to show that you can in fact go back on the policy if something is done in error. It's an all or nothing approach that's consistent with MAGA thinking. Look at abortion.

This.  Something you feel comfortable with.  Keep it simple and mainstream.  A basic semi-auto, probably in 9mm for ammo availability.

He may have been raised by one and gone to a private school affiliated with them (according to posts regarding its sports teams), but he belongs to a Baptist church (according to posts where he mentions the specific church). But don't mention the names of either place in association with him. Otherwise, he'll cry to the mods and have them give you a timeout, accusing you of trying to dox him.

So he's the unicorn that actually joined an SBC church instead of abandoning them for a husband/wife preaching duo non-dom church in the suburbs.

I have no idea if he was ever Church of Christ but can say my mom, who was raised in that church, married and "converted" to Southern Baptist after marrying my dad. It's something her Church of Christ mom never forgave her for, saying we (our little nuclear family) were all going to hell for it.
