I woke up and told my wife we would make more money, have more fun, put our phones down, put our phones down, find another charity, take a walk, find another sport to play, find another hobby, take a hike, etc. etc. we have a lot to be thankful for and we will find our way. our purpose is in our work, our family, my kids, our relationship and helping others.

There you go.

I'm trying to remember that I have a good job, enough money to travel, relative health and safety, and a lot of other things that a lot of people are missing out on right now.

I know I'm one of the lucky ones.  I'll have options if I need them.

But god damn, it's depressing to think of all of the unlucky ones, here and elsewhere, because of what's coming.  This shouldn't be happening.  This world is hard enough when we don't intentionally make it worse.

Shit-posting aside, the thread is called Trump’s America. In your opinion, what do you think is “coming”?

Agree. I also maintain that seeing the world through a screen has broken people’s grip on reality.  TV, phones, social media. People cannot differentiate between what is on the screen and what is real

The person just elected to President is verifiably: a convicted felon, convicted of sexual assault, a serial liar, a crook who stole from his own foundation, quite possibly a traitor to this country, identified as unfit for office by his entire administration and countless others, potentially a pedophile, a bully, a hate monger, appeals to racists, may also be racist, and is a terrible human being.  So that means people either don't believe all of this, or they don't care. Either way, they deserve every bit of shame they receive for being either so dumb or such a terrible human being.  Eff em.

A few thoughts.

The Dems "Big Tent" gives them a broad and diverse voting base, but it's clear that loudly progressing the platform of every demographic within that base does not resonate with those outside the tent. I thought it was absurd that the only ads Ted Cruz ran were about trans bullshit and "men playing in women's sports". I thought, "there's no way people really give a shit about this, right?" But boy was I wrong. They polled prospective voters and those voters said "we're tired of this shit." They knew what they were doing, and it worked. Identity Politics is a losing game. The path forward to protect and expand the rights for marginalized groups will probably require first obtaining a political mandate by gaining the public's trust on handling the meat-and-potatoes issues that do resonate with the broader electorate, and then passing legislation enshrining those rights for marginalized groups, even if the general public isn't necessarily comfortable with it. Dems need to stick to the meat and potatoes issues that resonate with voters and tune out the social issues that give middle America the ick. Jobs, economy, diplomacy. It sucks, but it's true.

My very real concerns about Trump's legislative and personal-retribution agenda are somewhat mitigated by the fact that he's too fucking lazy to do any real work, although spite is a great motivator. My concerns is who will be the person(s) setting and executing the legislative agenda. Donald Trump is not a fascist because of his political philosophy. Donald Trump has no philosophy. He's a political nihilist. (I mean, say what you will about the tenets of national socialism. At least it's an ethos) He will support anything that he believes is popular and will get people to vote for him. He's the very definition of a puppet. The question then becomes, who is he going to let put their hand up his ass and make him dance?

But he is a fascist in the sense that he believes the presidency gives him absolute authority. And his stacking of the Supreme Court and their ruling that the executive office is immune to prosecution only reaffirms that belief. How motivated will be to go after his enemies, and what will that look like? I truly don't know.

I'm also very nervous about diplomacy. This man is so unstable. It's terrifying that he could literally order a nuclear attack at any time. Also, hey Ukraine - you're fucked. You should probably start walking west if you live there.

As a straight white man, I try to reflect upon, appreciate and understand the incredible privilege with which I've been blessed. My life wasn't dramatically impacted by the first Trump presidency. And if my daughter were to need access to exercise what I believe is her right to get an abortion, we have the means to facilitate that. But I do feel for marginalized groups that will be affected by those setting the legislative agenda. Buckle up buttercup. It's gonna be a terrible fucking ride. It'll be like when those people boarded an architectural boat tour in Chicago on August 8th 2004 only to have Dave Matthews Band's tour bus dump 800 pounds of human waste all over them as the bus passed over the Kinzie Street bridge.

I think the days of having honorable grandpa types like Reagan are over. Since then, we’ve had multiple presidents who’ve done coke, gotten blowjobs in the Oval Office, have been unfaithful to their wives, etc and whatever Trump has done.

Oh, and another thing - pre-election polling data is worthless, especially when you have a candidate like Trump in the mix. People did not want to voluntarily admit that they were gonna vote for Trump. They know it's distasteful. And it skews the polls.

They’ve been trained to believe that politics is a team sport. What else do you think motivates them to vote against their interests?

Chomsky had it straight many decades ago, and sadly, we haven’t done much as a whole to prove him wrong:

”When I'm driving, I sometimes turn on the radio and I find very often that what I'm listening to is a discussion of sports. These are telephone conversations. People call in and have long and intricate discussions, and it's plain that quite a high degree of thought and analysis is going into that. People know a tremendous amount. They know all sorts of complicated details and enter into far-reaching discussion about whether the coach made the right decision yesterday and so on.

These are ordinary people, not professionals, who are applying their intelligence and analytic skills in these areas and accumulating quite a lot of knowledge and, for all I know, understanding.

On the other hand, when I hear people talk about, say, international affairs or domestic problems, it's at a level of superficiality that's beyond belief.”

And it’s certainly turning out its ugly head again today. We’ve got motherfuckers coming here to talk shit…but when the red flags about the economy were coming out in 2019 and when they horribly botched the response to one of the worst pandemics we’ve ever seen? Fucking crickets. They can’t defend his policies (to the extent they even know what they are, which is doubtful), but they love to talk shit about “cuck lib tears.” And they think “libruls” are the problem.

No, motherfucker. The problem is dickheads like that who refuse to learn anything. If they have one talent in this world, it’s the complete inability to understand simple things and when called out for it, act all butthurt and indignant.

One of the big problems the Democrats had last night was low turnout. Sadly, the wrong people turned out. But that’s how it always is. When Trump said that he could shoot people on Madison Avenue and his numbers wouldn’t go down, he wasn’t joking and he wasn’t wrong either. There’s a reliable contingent of people who will vote for a fucking convicted felon as long as they have the magic R next to their name on the screen. They have no moral compass, and they think the biggest problem is people like me saying that they have no moral compass. Them not having a moral compass is their issue, not mine.

It’s like I tell my MAGAt cousin every time he spews out one of his baseless, chickenshit conspiracy theories without the slightest shred of evidence to support it:

if you don’t give me a reason to believe you, I have no reason to believe you, and not having a reason to believe you is literally the best reason not to believe you.

Foreign policy hasn't exactly been a highlight the past 4 years., I'd hate to see it get any worse

Other than our sickeningly unflagging support of the Israeli slaughter of the Palestinians, our only other notable failure was caused by the GOP by obstructing military aid to Ukraine.

Our prestige was restored. Of course, that's out the window now. Seems we've kept up our end of our alliances. No big hiccups in trade policy. We seem to be cooperating to a much better extent in the global efforts (such as they are) to address climate cataclysm.

Our foreign policy is generally cheap theater for the rubes at home mostly involving useless invasions or airstrikes. Nothing abnormal there.

Yeah it's the Stephen Millers that we have to worry about. Dudes that are straight up more evil than Trump.

I 100% agree with all of this.   The only sliver of hope is that at the end of the day, Trump does whatever the fuck he wants, period, so maybe he's just not in the mood to deal with criticism for the worst of the worst ideas.  I fully acknowledge possibility that doesn't happen and the Miller's and Musk's of the world actually get their way.

That's the other shocking thing, people's memories of how things were under Trump, and Trump himself, are so bad.  I really thought more people were sick of his shit than this.
Tangentially related thought.  I didn't much like Harris back in 2018-2019, I liked Warren and was ultimately ok with Biden, but given the circumstances, I thought she ran a fantastic campaign and was a genuine, likeable candidate.  If you vote for the person, not the policies, or against the person, she seemed to be a winner.
I am guilty of casual misogyny, but I don't think even deep down I am a misogynist.  It barely entered my mind to consider it a negative that she is a woman, or a person of color. My only thought there was "it's about time" and that it would be historic.
I think a problem for Democrats is that traditional government appears to have failed a lot of people, or they perceive it that way.  But I don't really see how Democrats can campaign except on more or less traditional government grounds.  Are they going to have to campaign as more benevolent dictators?  What the fuck.
And, I had hoped that a Harris win would maybe start undoing some of the shit we've got going on in Texas, which is going to be a long, slow process, regardless.  Fucking fuck.  Ken Paxton is going to be our governor.

You are half-right. People do not remember how bad it was under trump, and Biden got so much shit done, so quickly, that people no longer noticed or cared how much was fucked up.

Where you are wrong is about people voting for policy or for their own interests. The reason conmen and scammers work is because of the momentarY flattery and entrenched identification with the group.

Now that coupled with the demands of our daily lives we turn to an oligarchic controlled media and get fed a steady diet of bullshit when we are fatigued.

Bread and circuses.

On this point, I have a couple of counterpoints.
Some states are at least trying to make it illegal to leave the state for such activity.  So you and her would be putting yourselves in some amount of legal peril anyway- especially if they decide that it’s murder and that’s the charge attached.
And then there’s the issue of emergency complications that need immediate treatment, where a long drive or plane ride don’t help.
