I want him to reach the end as much as you but, sadly, I'm not sure how much this will change in the near-term. There's very little chance he's even involved in these matters at this point. Oh, he's for them. But he ain't making many of the decisions. That's Miller and Vought and the rest of the racist ghouls at the controls in this country.

US to suspend visa processing for 75 nations, State Depar...

The Trump administration is suspending all visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, a State Department spokesperson said on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - The Trump administration is suspending all visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, a State Department spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The spokesperson did not elaborate on the plan, first reported by Fox News, which cited a State Department memo.

The pause will begin on January 21, Fox News said.

Somalia, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Brazil, Nigeria, Thailand are among the affected countries, according to the report.

The memo directs U.S. embassies to refuse visas under existing law while the department reassesses its procedures. No time frame was provided.

The reported pause comes amid the sweeping immigration crackdown pursued by Republican U.S. President Donald Trump since taking office last January.

In November, Trump had vowed to "permanently pause" migration from all "Third World Countries" following a shooting near the White House by an Afghan national that killed a National Guard member.

I think there was some comms misfire because the official account is saying this is “only” for immigrant visas. Tourism, business, etc still back on although some of these on the list are also shut down for any entry.

Point of order. No non-citizen is entitled to federal welfare.

Certain immigrants, those on Temporary Protected Status or Permanent Residents, can qualify under state laws for state-administered "welfare" benefits. But, typically, one condition of Permanent Resident status is gainful employment such that one is self-sufficient. And Temporary Protected Status aliens are, by definition, humanitarian cases where aid is appropriate.

Second point of order. Aren’t republicans against anyone on welfare, citizen or no?

Highly contingent on the definition being used for “welfare.” Traditionally for immigration purposes (based on executive interpretation, not statute) only a small set of cash-programs counted as “welfare” for public charge purposes.

SNAP and Medicaid, for example, were not included. And green card holders were eligible (still are for kids and adults after five years). My understanding is that new instructions on public charge are being drawn up.

Here is a poem Amanda Gorman wrote on the murder of Good.

For Renee Nicole Good Killed by I.C.E. on January 7, 2026.”

by Amanda Gorman

They say she is no more,
That there her absence roars,
Blood-blown like a rose.
Iced wheels flinched & froze.
Now, bare riot of candles,
Dark fury of flowers,
Pure howling of hymns.

If for us she arose,
Somewhere, in the pitched deep of our grief,
Crouches our power,
The howl where we begin,
Straining upon the edge of the crooked crater
Of the worst of what we’ve been.

Change is only possible,
& all the greater,
When the labour
& bitter anger of our neighbors
Is moved by the love
& better angels of our nature.

What they call death & void,
We know is breath & voice;
In the end, gorgeously,
Endures our enormity.

You could believe departed to be the dawn
When the blank night has so long stood.
But our bright-fled angels will never be fully gone,
When they forever are so fiercely Good.

The Trump administration will halt visa processing for visitors from 75 nations starting January 21, affecting countries like Somalia, Russia, and Iran.

Quite a few people in my office are from several of those countries. Gonna hate to see most of them go, but good riddance to the few shitbirds in the group.

The legal profession is going to hold one of its own accountable? I laughed.

My point stands, though, that most immigrants are ineligible for most forms of welfare until they've at least been here a while and are on a path to citizenship, ie Permanent Residents (green card).

So trying to keep up with the news today

  • Reports that US is preparing to strike Iran

  • Germany sends some troops to Greenland

  • Mobile carrier power outages throughout the US

  • Suspending visas from 75 countries

  • ICE continues terroristic actions on the state of Minnesota

  • FBI raids home of Washington Post reporter

That’s a significant difference from your original post, it’s millions of people.

The five year change is relatively recent, it was part of the last big funding bill. Eligibility for CHIP, SNAP, Section 8, etc used to not have the five year eligibility bar. Biden reverted to a rule where people sponsoring immigrants could be on non-cash assistance and it was not factored into the support affidavits as part of public charge.

There is absolutely no gainful employment rule for LPR status. Never existed.

Most of my staff are on visas and one is in China this month doing his periodic visa run. Luckily, China's not on that list. I guess Xi gave Trump the directive not to include China.

What does this do for citizenship applications by people here on a green card from one of those countries?

Because we have a legal relationship with someone who falls under that set of circumstances -- and is a dream American, incredible kid -- who has reached the age of majority and would like to pursue citizenship. And I am quite afraid that he can't now.

No. Applies only to people actually overseas. No impact on citizenship processing.
