June 2Jun 2 Popular Post The one degree of separation turn we've taken here makes this a fine time to admit that I've actually known Johntay Cook since he was born. My brother ran track with his aunt at Tech and decided to marry her. This past year with Tay isn't a blip on the radar of shit we've gone through with them since 2003 or so. Hoping a change of scenery does him well. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/crime/crime-reporters-notebook/family-of-dallas-woman-deanna-cook-murder-was-recorded-911-call-reflects-fight-for-justice/287-9ee149ca-4609-45dc-b01c-a530eadb26a7
June 2Jun 2 Popular Post 9 hours ago, Darth Tron said: Once Jim Edmonds glared at me from the outfield in Houston when my buddy yelled “Hey Edmonds, catch these balls” right when he was trying to make a play. He dropped the ball, loaded the bases with a credited error, and one batter later Lance Berkman crushed a grand slam for the win. To this day, we believe that we won that game for the Astros. Those were my brushes with celebrity. Like Icarus, I flew too close to the sun. Jim Edmonds was a fucking hot dog. Fuck him. Opening season of Enron Field, June 23, 2000 to be exact my bro secured front row Crawford Box tickets. First game of a Giants / Astros series. The night before there was a bizarre home run in St Louis that hit off Bonds glove and went over the fence (documented here https://sabr.org/gamesproj/game/june-22-2000-dunstons-unlikely-home-run-and-six-rbis-bring-cardinals-from-seven-runs-back-against-giants/ cant find video). So we get there early for BP and I said something smart ass to Bonds about how that would not happen with this wall, fully expecting to either be ignored or told to fuck off. To my astonishment, Barry turns to me and said "man I couldn't believe that happened! That was crazy!" He was cool as he could have possibly been. Fans around me were stunned. He hit a bomb and the Giants blew the Astros out. End of story

I kinda like @Darth Tron's Jim Edmonds story (although that seems more "encounter" than "brush") and @Foosters' Herm Edwards anecdote. But, yeah, mine was potentially more "interesting" in some ways. Piper was clearly intelligent and capable, and I've always had a thing for brunettes. She eventually became an an attorney in Houston. But her divorce from Jablin and other stuff seemed to have a devastating impact on her. edit: Just read @Dennis Taylor's story, too. That's a fine one. It's telling that we tend to use "brush" as an indicator of potentially negative or clearly negative interactions. Brushes with death, the law, and infamy are only slightly removed from fame on many occasions. Probably one of the reasons we watch stories like Johntay Cook's so closely. @Boko Bevo's story shows us how little we really know about the circumstances of people's lives at times. June 2Jun 2 Popular Post Three sports brushes with fame and autographs in various levels of weirdness. I shot an MCI commercial with Tim Landry but I made it about his experience as a B-17 pilot rather than as a coach. We had a B-17 fly in for the shoot. Spent two days with him and learned so much about the Cowboys. He loved getting to sit in the plane and had some great stories about his adventures over Germany. Fun times! I had him sign the storyboard: My wife did the PR for Jack Daniels and staged their BBQ contest in Lynchburg, TN. One year, she brought in John Stallworth as a judge. He drew up a play for me on the judging sheet: Most random one was running into Hank Stram in a copier shop in NYC. He was struggling to make copies of the lineup for an NFL game he was doing the color for. I'm made the copies for him and asked him about his TD play from his Super Bowl win, which is featured prominently in the NFL Films video about the game. He drew it for me on one of his pages. I love it. "When in doubt, call 65 Toss Power Trap." Edited June 2Jun 2 by TreatyOak

June 2Jun 2 I hung out with Jim Sorgi, his wife and his entourage at a strip club in Indianapolis. Dude was cool as fuck. He was buying me drinks and lap dances all night. After we left the stripping club, he invited me to his house to play poker with him and his crew. $100 buy in... and of course the millionaire won all the money. While I was there, he let me wear his colts super bowl ring. Damn thing fit like it was made for my finger. I also met Riddick Bowe at a Sesame Street themed theme park in Levittown, PA. He was very nice. Took some pictures with me and talked about some of his fights. Dude was definitely permanently punch drunk, though. Edited June 2Jun 2 by Lou_Sassle
