Try what parents did when I was a kid, take the child to visit someone who has measles so they can catch it and get it over with.  Likewise for chicken pox, mumps, etc.  (Not a good idea for smallpox, polio, anthrax, ebola and the like).

The advent of the printing press fuelled the spread of misinformation and the emergence of witch trials across Europe in the second half of the 15th century, according to a new study.

A new study? That’s not exactly breaking news. It also fueled the spread of Protestantism which is well documented and not in the least unrelated.

It is astonishing to watch.  Sure, my usual suspects continue to post MAGA crap.  One, who is currently proudly morphing to her new maralago face, is kind of entertaining to watch.  But, it is seeping into people and places that surprise and scare me.  It is not just that there is little resistance; it is that some people from whom I expected resistance (or at least a little empathy), are diving right into the ugly pool.

I'm also seeing this.

My Church of Christ grandma told me (a child) point-blank that her daughter (my mom) and all of our family were going to hell because we were Southern Baptist. Attending her nearby country church as a kid was made especially painful by the awkward-as-fuck way that every hymn started without instruments or universally understood downbeat.

Parents dropped me off once when it was Revival Week. Five straight days of country preaching and music like you described. Showed some scary ass films saying that 5/7 natural disasters had occurred which signaled the end times.   I also remember some talk of women going to hell for wearing pants.

My CoC youth group wasn’t allowed to wear shorts. To six flags. In dallas. In august.

One kid got heat exhaustion but at least no one turned on by exposed ankles.

May I suggest another approach?

 I'm still in shock that this dumbass country elected a guy on his way to prison for things he did the first time he was elected, which is the only reason he was even running, is an obvious Russian asset, told us a lot of the bad shit he was gonna do, and I could go on for hours. This is great and on-point FAFO because the fact is that veterans do get preference during a standard, organized reduction in force done legally. But that takes too long and makes it look like DJT is not just firing people so instead they are just firing everyone in their probationary period for non-documented “poor performance.”  There’s no veterans points to overcome being bad at your job.

Almost like giving people the illegal power to hurt others will inevitably be used against you.

But, even if you accept that, Russia has a long history of illiberalism, autocracy, brutality, and repression that they have never escaped and are a natural poltical/philiosophical enemy, regardless of the current regime.  Putin just makes that worse.  The notion that they are a more Christian western power in a secular world is completely absurd.

This is something I've tried to explain to people for years, but to no avail. Russia is the eternal enemy, not just to the US, but to the entire world. They are, without any hyperbole, the most malign global presence for the better part of 500 fucking years.

This represents the streetfighting phase of the fascist takeover. Visiting the National Holocaust Meuseum and Memorial page on hitler's rise to power is rather chilling when you realize how similar it is to today:

Quote

During election campaigns, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis won followers by playing on people’s hopes. The Nazis promised to

  • fix the economy and put people back to work;
  • return Germany to the status of a great European, and even world, power;
  • regain territory Germany had lost in World War I;
  • and create a strong authoritarian German government.

But the Nazis also played on people’s fears and prejudices. They falsely claimed that Jews and Communists were to blame for all of Germany’s problems. The Nazis promised to unite Germans along racial and ethnic lines. The Nazis planned to exclude Jews and others from German society.

Just to really hammer home how similar trump and hilter's rhetoric is, lets update those bullet points for current trump talking points:

During election campaigns, Donald Trump won followers by playing on people's hopes. He promised to

  • fix the economy and put people back to work (no change needed there)
  • return America to the status of a great and RESPECTED world power again
  • Make claims on new territories based on century-old misinterpretations of history (Panama Canal, Greenland)
  • create a strong authoritarian executive office ("I will be a dictator on day one")

May be some interesting reading and a small history lesson for @Texasborn91

So we find ourselves in a situation where the President has an army of morons who will do whatever he says. Then after they do whatever, he just pardons them. And he himself is now free to commit crimes, thanks to the Supreme Court. And he can't be impeached, because those who vote for impeachment will have the mob sicked on them, and rinse and repeat. This is great.

Must have run in the blood, because not long afterwards, Gramama ditched the church over how they used back-stabbery on the preacher.

Der Sturmabteilungen, ja?

Once trump has his official paramilitary force that's only answerable to him and him alone, we will be in the "reign of terror" section of the holocaust memorial

Currently reading Shirer's Rise and Fall.  The SA is exactly what came to my mind when reading Jive Turkey's post quoting Brian Stelter.

Boo-fucking-hoo, Jesse Watters. Go. Fuck. Yourself.

https://www.mediaite.com/tv/jesse-watters-makes-on-air-plea-to-trump-for-veteran-friend-who-got-doged-in-pentagon-cuts/

Quote

Fox News host Jesse Watters made an on-air plea that the Trump administration be “less callous” when implementing when laying off federal employees after a military veteran friend was “DOGE’d” in Elon Musk’s Pentagon cuts.

A report on Wednesday revealed that the Pentagon had provided the Trump administration with a list of probationary employees who could be targeted in the next wave of federal workforce reductions.

Watters took to the air on The Five to raise the case of his friend, a veteran of 20 years, who was months into a new role at the Pentagon and still under probation but discovered this week that his job was set to be terminated as part of DOGE’s initiatives.

“Let me tell you a story about Chris. Chris was a guy I met at a shooting event in New Jersey,” Watters began.

“Was Chris in the interview or another guy? Male or female?” panelist Harold Ford Jr. jibed.

Watters continued: “Let me finish: a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Military, one of the guys who has killed a lot of bad guys. Put his life on the line. He punched out after 20 years of working for the Pentagon. And he’s only been there a few months, so his probationary period he just found out he’s probably going to get laid off. He’s going to get DOGE’d.”

The host added: “He texted me and said: ‘Jesse, this is not good. I’m really sad. I’m upset.’ This guy is not a DEI consultant. He is not a climate consultant. This guy is a veteran. So when you’re talking about DOGE-ing people, veterans should get priority. Because if you’re going to go out there and kill enemies, put your life on the line, you should not be in the same category as people that are doing DEI.”

Pivoting to Ford Jr., Watters hit back: “Now, Harold and his ilk, they like to talk about the slash and burn corporate ethos – he just need to be a little bit less callous with the way, Harold, we talk about DOGE-ing people. I want that to sink in.”

“You’re arguing with yourself!” Ford Jr. replied.

“No! I am not guilty of that,” Watters said. “I finally found one person I knew who got DOGE’d, and it hit me in the heart.”

He concluded: “Talking about big-ticket items, right? Let’s talk about those. The Pentagon, you have a weapons program in some influential congressman’s district, it is showing no promise in the theater of war. You cut that! And that’s big savings! So, besides saving my friend, Chris, we want bigger dividend doge check rebates. I don’t want to pay down the debt, put it back into the economy.”
