"Not talking to me because of politics"

I tried unsuccessfully to explain this to family who were complaining about "losing friends because of politics".

Trump's mouth, associatiates and history of actions took the Presidential choice way beyond just politics.

It's entirely too convenient, aka horseshit, for them to try and limit the scope of everyone's issue with Trump to just "politics".

Of course, these family members will lose their face if ACA goes away too.

It's a tired tactic- use broad, general terms that deliberately avoid specifics. Stating you're losing friends and family over "politics" sounds petty compared to "I'm losing loved ones because I supported a guy who has stated he wants to use the military against Americans who don't support him".

Exactly. I’ve cut off friends from high school that I still spoke to. I can’t trust any of them now. They voted for the guy that labeled me the enemy from with in (plus all the other terrible shit on his platform). So, now we are enemies and I will act in kind.

Side note - being a remote employee has paid off. I don’t have to be around an office full of loud Trump supporters (Fortune 300 company in O&G).

Not sure if this should go here or not, as it’s just for Texas. But, I hope everyone is REAL happy in their marriage. This is being filed for 2025 session.

Another Vasut bill would make Texas one of four states that allow “covenant marriage,” a legal arrangement that has been favored by some conservative Christians, including U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson. Under House Bill 931, both parties would have to agree to a divorce in order for a court to grant it. Before that, they’d also have to undergo at least five hours of counseling by a member of the clergy or a licensed mental health professional.

No, no, there's going to be plenty of that too. There's a ton of businesses that saw cost increases of $1, so they took the opportunity to raise prices by $3.

When the service companies I deal with come in with price increase requests, I make them provide back-up documentation from their supplier stating cost to supply has gone up X%.  No documentation, no price increase.

Can this go here? The second it’s a secret ballot, GOP MAGA warriors get knifed by their colleagues. Lulz.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), one of President-elect Trump’s closest allies in the Senate, has been knocked out of the race to elect the next Senate majority leader after the first round of voting, according to two sources familiar with the early results.

Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) won the first round of secret balloting, collecting 23 votes.

His chief rival, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), collected 15 votes, finishing in second place after the first round.

Scott just missed advancing to a runoff, winning 13 votes.

This is a less dark spot then.  I don't see Thune or Cornyn abdicated the Senate's "advice and consent" role.  Then again, I've been wrong about other things.  And very recently too.

It will be interesting to me to see if either Thune or Cornyn fully embrace the “we want to do recess appointments for DJT” in an attempt to grab the true believers or if they will do a gentleman’s agreement to just dance about and argue on other merits.

But she WAS the party’s candidate for President. And the party declined a request by Palestinian advocates to speak at the DNC, but allowed pro-Israel speakers (which, by the way, leaders of the Uncommitted movement supported).

From my conversations with Muslim friends, merely allowing a Palestinian voice to speak briefly at the convention would have gone a looooong way. It was about showing a path forward and hope. The party fucked that up as badly as it possibly could have, which is a high bar for our lovable blue losers.

Haha--holy fucking shit.  These dumb motherfuckers pulled the cord on the political suicide vest because the Democrats didn't let them have a speaker at the convention?  And you expect me to feel an ounce of sympathy for them?

pre-tax corporate profits:

fredgraph.png?g=1AM1M

$2.4 trillion in Q4 2019 to $4.08 trillion in Q2 2024. 68% increase in fewer than five years. from 2019 backwards, it would require you to go back to Q4 2004 to see that level of growth in before-tax corporate profits controlling for the financial crisis (as i did for covid). What took 15 years previously achieved in 4.5 years.

after-tax corporate profits:

$2.12 trillion in Q4 2019 to 3.41 trillion in Q2 2024. 60% increase in fewer than five years. from 2019 backwards, it would require you to go back to Q2 2005 to see that level of growth in after-tax corporate profits controlling for the financial crisis (as i did for covid). what previously too 14 years achieved in 4.5 years.

Just look at what the markets are doing.  Stocks are up nearly 10% over the last week; bond yields are also rising.  Everyone fucking thinks inflation is going to bounce back up and corporations are going to use that as an opportunity to make windfall profits.

The investing classes are going to make a killing.

It's the working classes that are going to be killed.

So, you know--the yoozh.

Not exactly. But I do expect decent people to feel sympathy for millions of innocents trying to survive an onslaught in Gaza (and, likely soon, the West Bank).

I know this thread has moved quickly, but this discussion started when a few of our resident assholes cheered on the coming slaughter in Gaza as if it were some sort of karmic justice for the poor choices of Muslims in Michigan. Then said assholes doubled down on it.

We can debate whether American Muslims who declined to vote for Kamala deserve what’s coming. I personally believe their decision presented a unique moral conundrum. But are you really going to defend Brisket and 956 as they celebrate the massacre of innocent non-Americans who had literally no choice to make?

Dude. Again. They are not celebrating the deaths. They are celebrating the fact that all of these morons that voted against their own interests are going to find out hardcore what it means to be an uninformed or naive single issue voter, most likely swayed by propaganda because they didn’t take a microsecond to actually learn about the geopolitics of the situation.

But to be fair, I'm an equal opportunity shithead and hope Israel gets wiped out too.  I'm tired of hearing about the bullshit over there and that somehow it's our problem to fix.  Fuck 'em.  Let both of them fight it out and sort out their own problems for a change.

The discussion moves quickly, but not that quickly.  I was specifically addressing the American Muslims you identified in your post--the dumb assholes in Dearborn who voted 85% against Harris.

There is no fucking "moral conundrum."  American electoral politics is a binary choice: either the Republican or the Democrat.  One of those two is going to get elected.  Voting for one helps that candidate get elected; deciding not to vote for a candidate hurts that candidate's chances of getting elected.  It's that fucking simple.

I didn't make the choice to elect the candidate who wants to ban Muslims from entering the United States.  I voted against the candidate who wants to deport Muslims and strip naturalized Muslims of their citizenship.  I voted against the candidate who will allow Israel to kill absolutely every Palestinian it can lay hands on.

The Muslims in Dearborn overwhelmingly voted to elect that candidate.

There ain't no fucking moral conundrum here.  One candidate was going to be elected: the candidate who supports all those things, or the candidate who opposes them.  The fine people in Dearborn chose the former.

They get to fucking live with that decision.

Or not.

Either way, I don't give a fuck.

Yeah, I grew up 5 minutes away from Mexico, and it always struck me how different life was there.  I was born into a privileged family.  We had far more than most and never were concerned with money.  Then I would go to Mexico and see all the shanty towns on the hills, and kids trying to sell you chicles to help their family, the prostitutes in boys town trying to survive selling what they had to sell.  And I was taken aback by how much lower their standard of living was compared to mine, and that the only real difference between them and I was that they were born 5 minutes south beyond an imaginary line drawn on a drying riverbed.

And then I would pass all that by and get to my real destination.  The house of the wealthy, politically connected family that was the ruling class in Mexico.  I was friend with their son who was sent to private school in the U.S. to be educated.  I was taken aback again by how much higher their standard of living was compared to mine.  The thousands of acres, the mission-style mansion, the landing strip and private plane in the backyard.  It was disconcertingly difficult to try and not be taken aback by the extravagance.

I think we are on a similar road in the United States, just behind the curve.

I get the impression that neither Brisket nor 956 celebrate the massacre of innocent non-Americans.  Instead It's schadenfreude for those who were complicit in allowing the greater of two evils to come into power by voicing their protest through voting against the interests of those innocent non-Americans.  More like, "STFU you were responsible for this" rather than "yay, more innocent dead people."
