Despite political rhetoric, the reality on the ground is clear: the dairy industry depends on these laborers — many of whom work 12-hour days starting at 4 a.m., like “Chepe,” an undocumented worker and father of three who has become an advocate with Migrant Justice.

“I used to feel safer here,” said Chepe, who hasn’t seen his children in eight years. “But since Trump came back, it feels like we’re going back to the dark ages.”

Still, amid fear, a remarkable show of unity is growing. Chepe now helps lead protests and organizes for better protections, while Vermont’s farming families — many of them Trump voters — are voicing concern not just for their livelihoods, but for the wellbeing of the workers they’ve come to rely on.

Legal advocates, like Brett Stokes of the Vermont Law and Graduate School, are stepping in to defend the detained workers, who were quickly funneled through deportation proceedings. “They pay taxes. They do essential work. They’re part of our communities,” Stokes said.

The growing awareness has also reignited calls for immigration reform, especially the lack of a visa program for year-round dairy work. Unlike Vermont’s apple or berry farms, which can hire seasonal workers legally, dairy farms have no such option.

“Replacing your whole crew every few months isn’t realistic,” said Machia. “It takes time to train people, and locals just don’t want to do this work anymore.”

Even though Machia says he would still vote for Trump, the recent crackdown has prompted a deeper reckoning within his community — and perhaps, unexpectedly, a new sense of appreciation for those they once took for granted.

In a state where farms rely on undocumented hands, Vermont is waking up to an inescapable truth: immigrant labor isn’t just a political talking point — it’s the force that keeps the barns running and the milk flowing. And now, with fear in the air, farmers and migrant workers alike are standing up — together.

A hot bed of gangbanger activity.

I spent close to a week in Montpelier once, so this hits close to home.   Lovely town.

Fuck you Dustin you absolute cunt.

The fact that everyone associated with the vile Fox News propaganda that has demonized all immigrants is not already burning in hell is absolute proof there is no good and omnipotent God.

The crew that mows my lawn didn’t show up last week. For a couple of days, I was concerned they were gone.

They showed up yesterday. I mean it would be a pain in the ass to find a new crew.

I can’t fathom the stupidity of someone who has a farm’s and/or dairy’s worth of work to do every day, not realizing their entire labor force is undocumented, and voting for the candidate that is going to cause your labor force to disappear on any given day. It’s immeasurably stupid.

Come on, friend, you haven't even tried. Sure we can measure it. The question is, how?

But first, are we talking one sliding scale from zero possible stupidity to maximum, or are there multiple axes for like, say, a Juggalo Amway Maga Autotuned Speakerphone-in-Restaurant Spam-clicking Flat-Earther?

Do we use some Godless French decimal system, or quirky medieval soup of twelves, eights, and body parts?

In honor of the departed milking crew, maybe we should throw in some intricate wheel-within-wheel calculations.

The third story is that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has denied North Carolina’s request that it honor a commitment made by President Joe Biden to pay for 100% of the costs for removal of debris after Hurricane Helene devastated the western part of the state in September 2024.

...

Trump suggested he would respond more effectively to voters in North Carolina, and two of the hardest-hit counties there, Avery and Haywood, backed him in 2024 by margins of 75.7% and 61.8%, respectively, similar to those it had given him in 2016 and 2020.

Once in office, though, Trump began to talk of eliminating FEMA. Now the White House has told North Carolina residents they’re on their own as they try to dig out from Hurricane Helene.

That's a real shame.

Occam's Razor

In the summer of 1995 I was in the middle of the Wisconsin country, around a place called Cataract, which was nothing but dairy farms and wheat fields. I knocked on this door of an old, white house, with wood siding that desperately needed a paint job, and packed inside were about 50+ of the darkest-skinned Latin Americans I've ever seen. None of them spoke a word of English.

I'll never forget it.

Not here, but I do have empathy for those who found it a source of anxiety and angst. I grew up in a multi-generational home and it was considered by those elders as one of the marks of a good student, ergo, it was done.

Which ever axis stupidity is on will have to use a logarithmic scale.

They do know them that’s the thing. They truly thought this regime would not go after “the good ones”

if you know anyone in Texas with a working ranch it’s the same thing. All the cowboys are immigrants. You can’t get young white or black kids to fix fences, run cattle, or even shred a pasture. Hell you can’t get the immigrants’ kids to do it. It’s bonkers.

I guess there’s still a few FFA kids raising show calves pigs and goats, but not enough to keep a ranch afloat

That’s one of the reasons Yellowstone is so fucking unbelievable to me.

Is this recovering pain pill addict Dustin Machia?

Quote

Recovering addict Dustin Machia, 25, attended Shumlin's speech and was singled out by the governor as someone who quickly became addicted after being offered Oxycontin, a powerful opioid, in high school.

"It led me to places I didn't want to go, never thought I'd be," Machia said.

He soon became a $500-a-day addict who stole $20,000 worth of equipment from the family farm before his mother introduced him to a local physician who helped him. It took him more than a week to get into a rehabilitation program.

Machia, who lives in Swanton, just a few miles from the Quebec border, managed to overcome his addiction with the help of family, friends and hard work. He said that his experience came before heroin reared its head in Vermont and that he hopes the Legislature can find ways to get people help when they ask for it.
