I have a strong affinity for this.  While recognizing that Israel is the only democracy in the ME, for which I have some sympathy, Bibi is a total asshole.

One of the Founding Fathers' great ideas was "let's not bring all that European infighting over HERE. Let's get us a fresh start."   I thought that was somewhat true for the intractable Arab-Israeli conflicts of the last 50 years.  We can argue about who bought it here first, but it seems to be a cancer to the body politic from where I'm standing.

Given what’s happened in the US, why should anyone care about Israel being a democracy. MAGA only loves because Revalations etc

We do to some degree.  My middle school child had interest and compound interest taught in a math class with a finance context included.

That’s great. Teachers at school teaching basic finance. Dad at home teaching them to fight chimpanzees with their bare hands.

Sounds like a well rounded education.

You need to pull back on how closely you follow politics.  There's no point in making yourself miserable over something we clearly have no control over.  The next 4 years are gonna suck, but they will suck less if you only have a vague idea of what's happening.

Yea this is where I’m moving towards. I was genuinely considering moving back mainland to be closer to family in the next couple years but now I’m just going to stay out here and disassociate from the regular US for awhile. meh. at a certain point it becomes equally condescending and pointless to look with pity and say 'forgive them, they know not what they do!'

i mean god bless anyone taking specific action, but it's not difficult at all to understand natural instincts.

I need to figure out a balance between tuning the fuck out for my sanity, and actually doing something to help. Maybe a monthly donation or something, and going along with my life paying no attention while everything burns to the fucking ground.

I've cancelled my NY Times and LA Times subs, removed Instagram and reddit my my phone. My profile on this site is all I've really got left and I removed my auto login on my phone as well. Have to do a bit of work to get back on. My goal is to stop by this site maybe 1-2 times a day.

I got rid of the newspapers before the election, and the social media after.

There is no doubt that Trump and co. are a threat to the nation. But I've done this before. I spent 2016-2020 doom scrolling. Every day was a new "BREAKING" news story in which Trump had broken some norm, betrayed an ally, or broken the law. And what did I do with all of that info? Nothing. Didn't motivate me to volunteer, didn't become politically engaged. I just internalized it and it would impact my day-to-do. Part of it was always thinking the "next" scandal would finally wake up my old friends, classic conservatives, and the body politic. Then the resulting frustration and disbelief that none of it mattered.

I actually found the 2020 election perhaps the most demoralizing of them all. I was certain that after 4 years of Trump we'd see a collective repudiation. Nope. Election wasn't called for a couple of days due the margins in the swing states. That's what did it for me. I gave up any and all hope that our future is a place I want to be a part of. This most recent election was more a confirmation of my fears than a surprise. In a weird way, giving up hope has been freeing. Its only been a week since the election, but despite the turn for the worse in the news, I've had a lovely week. My phone pretty much stays in my pocket unless I'm texting or calling someone. Started carrying my Kindle with me again. Would recommend.

So anyways, I'm done. Done reading the news. Done paying attention. I've lived in a foreign country that was, at the time, ruled by an autocratic dictator. Did I spend my days thinking about the erosions of the rule of law or the dissidents that were being tortured and killed? Nope. Just went about my day. Enjoyed life. I can certainly do the same here.

So, burn it down. Or don't. Whatever.

You're not alone brother.

This is where a lot of people are, myself included.  All you need to do is look at CNN's ratings.  Look at the Washington Post's subscription numbers.  People are tuning out.  And they need to do so for their basic mental health.

And this is where we'll get scolded because that's exactly how the autocrat wins--by getting people to tune out rather than stand up for their principles and resist.

But at the same time, I just don't care.  I don't care about this country, and I care even less about it's people.  They can all go to the devil for all I care.

Same. Spent the last 9 year invested in politics on a daily basis. Did it make my life better in any way? Hell no. Deleted all the political podcasts/substacks/emails that I invested time in.

I don't think CNN's ratings or NYT's or WaPo's subscriptions declining will necessarily be indicative of people tuning out. I think people realize those institutions are fascist collaborators and want to get their information elsewhere. I do think a lot of people don't want to repeat 2017-2020 and want to figure a different way to approach things this time and that may look different from obsessively following mainstream media.

Everyone likes a winner.

But ditching legacy media with no real replacement for a counter message also has its downside.

Fox isn’t going away. So the state media channel remains. This reaches the olds.

And the right wing social media podosphere also continues.

The left does need to build some sort of counter culture to highlight the hypocrisy of legacy media first and then go after the right second.

You can’t replace something with nothing.

And yet I don’t have what that something is so I’m no real help.

I beg to differ a little bit with wildcat and agree with DNA. I admittedly spent time in the news game and have a journalism degree. I wouldn't call WaPo or the NYT "fascist collaborators" really. Leadership really let us down but more than anything, they failed in doing their civic duty in letting somebody like Trump and his endless stream of bullshit go unchecked. For the first time in this nation's history, one candidate (and now cult party) weren't playing by any of the rules that were adhered to for the first 250 years of this nation's existence. They're used to people playing by the rules. MAGA doesn't do that. Add in something like FOX News which isn't a news organization and never was. It's a propaganda machine that was created to combat a perceived liberal media slant.

The answer isn't to create the liberal version of Fox News. That won't work, certainly not on those that could possibly see the shit sandwich we're all about to be served and perhaps stray slightly to other sources of news. They aren't all of a sudden tuning into hyper-partisan liberal media. I think the "old guard" institutions need to decide to get in the fight -- the real fight -- or die of obsolescence.

It's been a long day with body blow after body blow so what the fuck do I know really? I'm just stressed to the gills thinking about the next two years at a min before we can hopefully start cutting into the MAGA/GOP cabal in the legislatures. I just hope there's a country left to save at that point.

Some may argue that repeated pattern of behavior makes it not really matter if they're pro fascist or not, since they're making room for the fascists to make their moves by giving cover to polite society to ignore the problem.

Not sure if this should go here or not, as it’s just for Texas. But, I hope everyone is REAL happy in their marriage. This is being filed for 2025 session.

Another Vasut bill would make Texas one of four states that allow “covenant marriage,” a legal arrangement that has been favored by some conservative Christians, including U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson. Under House Bill 931, both parties would have to agree to a divorce in order for a court to grant it. Before that, they’d also have to undergo at least five hours of counseling by a member of the clergy or a licensed mental health professional.

Would that be for all marriage/the default option, or would that just allow nutjobs to enter into a more stringent arrangement if they both consent?

I mean, I know it's a slippery slope either way but there is a distinction.

All the pro-Trump subcontractors I’ve talked will be holding their butts in January.

NGL, our SoCal group is struggling a bit because a few projects, about $600M worth were put on hold, because… interest rates.

At this point, we might as well just archive those because they probably won’t be back before the next midterm election.

Wife's had some bouts of homesickness after relocating out of TX earlier this year. On election night, in the window where it was pretty clear Harris was going to come up short in the Sun Belt but there was some hope to hold out for the Blue Wall, I remarked on the returns in Texas and Florida (Trump +9 in TX and +13 in FL at the time).

"We are never fucking moving back." It was a really sad moment.

I'm more or less with you. No interest in riding out a second Trump term in TX. WA is a state that's grown a lot over the last 10-20 years and is only going to be more attractive to those looking to get out of red states - to say nothing of climate change - in the coming years. I feel like the most productive thing I can do is lean into building community here and trying to contribute to making things better at the local/state level.

And Canada's only a couple hours away.

Ain't paying no $80/day in rent or whatever it is to hang out inside like I still live in Houston, that's for sure. Summer was great and fall's been surprisingly lovely, actually. A little worried about the dead of winter in Jan-March when fall color and holidays are over, football winds down, and it's been dark for a couple months with plenty more to go, but cross that bridge when we get there.

Yeah I don't know what I thought you were referring to, but it wasn't the vitamin lol. So I've heard, though.

Definitely, an asshole I may be, but it was torture my first year. I seriously was depressed. I don't want that for anyone going through winter up here.

I'm from here, and yeah - lights are your friend during the "cozy season" lol. I've been to a lot of places (maybe almost as many as Inka) and the summers up here are unparalleled anywhere, but the piper must be paid and now is the time. Getting up into the mountains helps if you get into the snow stuff; the sun is normally out more up there on the east slopes. I've met quite a few expat Texans in the past few years who've made the move.

Where is the propaganda?  In the quote from the tweeter, or the video of the FEMA employee?  Where is the lie?
