FEMA not answering calls from Kerr

Two days after catastrophic floods roared through Central Texas, the Federal Emergency Management Agency did not answer nearly two-thirds of calls to its disaster assistance line, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times.

The lack of responsiveness happened because the agency had fired hundreds of contractors at call centers, according to a person briefed on the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal matters.

The agency laid off the contractors on July 5 after their contracts expired and were not extended, according to the documents and the person briefed on the matter. Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, who has instituted a new requirement that she personally approve expenses over $100,000, did not renew the contracts until Thursday, five days after the contracts expired.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

“We've arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.”

“I worry that, especially as the Millennium edges nearer, pseudoscience and superstition will seem year by year more tempting, the siren song of unreason more sonorous and attractive. Where have we heard it before? Whenever our ethnic or national prejudices are aroused, in times of scarcity, during challenges to national self-esteem or nerve, when we agonize about our diminished cosmic place and purpose, or when fanaticism is bubbling up around us - then, habits of thought familiar from ages past reach for the controls.

The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir.”

I'm not digging into this guy's past because I give zero fucks; but I wonder what his convictions were for.  From what I recall, Canada ain't letting you in with any felony convictions including DUI.  G7 and the like should start hosting all their hootenannies in Canada so the dotard can't show up and fuck everything to bolivia.

As someone surmised above he had some light criming as a ute. Marijuana, I believe. The thing is that crossing the border in Canada can be extremely informal and they may or may not bother to look up someone's criminal history via their passport. This time they did. Were I a non-citizen who wants to remain in the US I would definitely avoid attempting to cross the border for now and who knows for how long.

American Father and Vlogger Tricked Into Front Line Combat by Russia

American moves whole family to Russia cause "family values" and immediately gets sent to the front lines..gets caught in a shake down for "supplies".

Quote

Derek was originally promised a job as a war correspondent, then as a mechanic in a repair battalion because of his experience as a welder.

Instead, his unit of foreigners is reportedly being trained, hastily, in Russian, for frontline combat.

“Unfortunately, he feels like he is being thrown to the wolves right now, and he is kind of having to lean on faith.”

Quote

In April 2024, Michael Gloss, the 21-year-old son of a CIA executive, was killed while fighting for Moscow in Ukraine.

I haven't watched any episodes of the Huffman’s recently, but I suspect the parents have a history of alcoholism, fucked up religion, and lib derangement disorder.

The wife was talking about how she had major organ damage due to alcoholism and had her gall bladder removed.

I feel sorry for their kids.

Having seen the story, but not knowing much else other than references to alcoholism, sounds like they got big into the "church" part and maybe kinda forgot about that whole "steps" thing.  I had not connected those dots, but you're probably spot on.
