Living the "Nightmare" of Nebraska

This summer, a long-time female friend (with benefits, fortunately) asked me to drive with her from DC to Tucson. She needed to spend time with her aging mom. I rented a car and drove back to East Coast.

-- In one of the football threads, I told what happened when we encountered two 70 year old Tennessee fans in an empty Starbucks outside Knoxville. Hilarious! "Them damn Longhorns!"

On the way back, I drove through Kansas and Nebraska for the first time. Flat and boring and corn for miles.

Stopped to gas up at a convenience store just outside a super tiny farm town on a two-lane highway in Corn Land. (I avoid interstates when possible or practical, just to pass through small towns and get the vibe.) Went inside to use the rest room and grab a snack.

After pouring a soft drink from fountain and turning to look for a snack, a middle-aged (45 or so) lady who worked at the store said in a nice perky voice:

“How are you doing, sir? Can I help you find anything?”

— She had on tons of make-up, but was trying her best to dress and look contemporary and of this era. I mean this as a compliment. She was legit trying to look good while working in a convenience store, probably for not much more than minimum wage. She has enough pride and sense of self-worth to dress nice for a freaking convenience store. I respect that! Maybe she was the manager, or it is part-time second job, who knows.

Me: “No thanks. I am getting some jerky. How are you today?

Lady: “Oh, I’m living the dream!”

Me: “That’s nice. So I assume this is a small farming community."

Her: “Yes, this is what we do.”

Me: “Is that the dream?

Her: “Well, some people say dreams can be nightmares.”

— This came totally out of nowhere! Her perky manner disappeared. She was being introspective and her voice reeked of desperation. She suddenly looked very sad.

Me: “A nightmare... Really?” I was legit surprised.

Her: “Well, it’s not all its cracked up to be here.”

Me: “Sounds bad. Can you exit the nightmare?”

Her: “I gotta son here in high school. Wouldn’t know where to go.”

Me: “Well, ma’am, I am very sorry you feel trapped in a nightmare. I wish you the best and I hope you can get out with your son. Ya know, some people say America is becoming a nightmare and want to leave. Most of the people is this state voted for the nightmare.”

This line surprised her, her eyes kinda bugged out and she arched her eyebrows -- like she had never heard it.

Her: “Sir, can I ask where are you from?” With an exclamation!

Me: “A big city…. a very big city.”

Her: “I knew it!”

[ Let me qualify this. When I walk in a small town America stores or restaurants, local people can tell I ain’t no farmer, rancher, redneck, local, small town dude, family man, corporate clone, etc. They can tell I am from a big city and fucking cosmopolitan. I’ve aged, but I’m 6’0, slender, weigh what I weighed in grad school, exercised since high school. I am always in Levis that fit snug with a great cotton or linen shirt and sleek shades, graying hair combed back, cool ankle boots or cowboy boots (no Lucchese corporate conservative BS) of some kind. That’s it.

Her: “Wow, can I ask which one?

Me: “Lived in several big cities. Maybe you try a big city within a day’s drive like Kansas City or Dallas.”

Her: “Oh, I don’t know about living in big cities.”

Me: Well, if this is a nightmare, then maybe look for a larger city that might be less a nightmare, with more economic and cultural opportunity”

It looked as if she tried to smile, while her eyes wanted to cry.

Her: “I guess I got some thinking to do….”

Me: “Ma’am I gotta go. Best of luck. I’d say get the hell out of here!”

Postscript:

I feel genuinely sorry for her. I imagine she will never leave the nightmare. Her intuitive common sense tells her something is fucked up in Corn State, but does not really know what to do because her station in life. The big city seems like a glittering temptation, but a temptation too far.

I wonder how many others in red state sense they are living in a nightmare in MAGA world.

Oh, and fuck the Cornhuskers.

Farming challenges

Carter says farmers are facing challenges from several angles. Earlier this year, several countries imposed tariffs on U.S. exports.

Carter said while businesses can fight tariffs by raising their prices, farmers can’t do this. “Our price is set by global markets,” he said. He said tariffs are costing farmers their biggest customers. “Mexico and China are the two biggest rice buyers; they buy more rice than anybody,” Carter said. “When they stop buying rice, we have nowhere to go.”

These morons always blame the countries doing the retaliatory tariffs.  Never one thought about why it's happening in the first place.

I don’t think they are blaming anyone per se. they are observing objective data that show why isolationist policies can’t work in a modern global economy. The light bulb just hasn’t quite come on yet

I mean, how many time/ways can you describe what a tariff is though? At this point I guess it takes experiential learning for these idiots to learn.

Yeah, that all became painfully obvious over the past decade.

"That is a hot stove burner.  If you touch it, you will burn yourself."  It's a simple and direct an explanation as you can give.  And what follows?

[sizzling sound of hand on burner]

"OUCH!  I didn't think the hot stove was going to burn MY hand!"

1) you can’t understand it for them

2) they want Trump so went instead with the “he wouldn’t lie to us or say it if it isn’t true” opinion completely against all explanations that may have accidentally filtered to them

3) what would they be watching (or reading hahaha) where they would be exposed to the truth?  It’s not like Fox News lets democrats on their airspace to speak freely for 5 minutes.

The amazing logic of Trumpers of "it's Biden's fault you made me vote for fascism" is EXACTLY -- not a little bit, but EXACTLY -- like the reasoning of an piece of shit abusive husband saying "it's your fault that I hit you" to his battered wife.  "If you wouldn't have burned my grilled cheese, I wouldn't have lost my temper and knocked out one of your teeth.  So, really, my criminal violence is YOUR fault."

No, you fucking pieces of shit, the number of times it's excusable to vote for a fascist piece of shit who promises to install a fascist regime is exactly the same as the number of times it's okay to beat your wife for serving your soup too hot: zero point zero.

WaPo Opinion

My workers voted for Trump. Now they’re absorbing the impact.”

Spoiler

Sachin Shivaram is chief executive of Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry and a member of the Main Street Alliance.

It’s a hard truth that some kinds of manufacturing are never going to come back in the United States, and no amount of protective tariffs will change that. This truth is ignored at great peril for American workers.

American manufacturing workers don’t ask for much: a fair wage, steady work and the dignity of knowing their job matters. At the aluminum foundry in Wisconsin where I am chief executive, those jobs start at $27 an hour with a pension, a child care stipend and the security of long-term employment. Many of our people have built careers here, sending kids to college, buying homes and retiring with pride. They are exactly the kind of workers President Donald Trump says he wants to help. On that, we agree.

A disclosure: I didn’t vote for the man. But I’m not just writing this for myself. I’m writing on behalf of the roughly 1,000 workers who power our company — and who overwhelmingly did vote for him. One reason I know that is because in 2020, we hosted then-candidate Joe Biden at our factory in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and a substantial number of our workers turned up in red MAGA hats, spoiling many a photo op. They made sure management and ownership knew how they felt.

I believe that the president truly wants to help our workers, who form a crucial part of his base. But recent tariffs targeting aluminum imports work against my employees’ interests. I honestly believe this isn’t intentional. Ironically, the president has probably helped me more than anyone at the company, thanks to the increase in the state and local tax deduction and other provisions included in the One Big Beautiful Bill.

Our business had been growing, and demand was strong in the first quarter of this year. But unfortunately, it has all been downhill since.

Our primary product is aluminum castings. We melt metal, make a mold, pour the metal, machine it, and sell custom metal parts for engines or for equipment built by our customers. All of that is done here in the United States, and we serve storied national champions of industry — think tractors, trucks, rockets.

Of any type of manufacturer, we are among the least exposed to the impacts of the new tariff regime: Our input costs are minimal because most of what we buy is raw aluminum and sand for our molds. America doesn’t make aluminum. It is so energy-intensive to refine naturally occurring bauxite into the familiar metal that it’s sometimes referred to as “solid electricity.” We buy aluminum from places such as Iceland and the Middle East, where energy costs are cheaper.

The Trump administration’s tariffs are meant to encourage domestic aluminum smelting. But they will cause real economic pain. Our input costs are up. The Midwest Premium — a fee that largely determines the cost of buying aluminum in North America — has tripled in the past six months. Our nonaluminum inputs rose 7 percent last month alone. We’ve had little choice but to pass those increases on to our customers, who are no doubt seeing even greater increases from other manufacturers. We saw the first evidence of this in the producer price index numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in early August. Wholesale prices are starting to climb, and consumer prices will soon follow.

I get notifications all day and night about big price changes. One would have to be clairvoyant to make capital investment decisions in such a situation, and opinions wildly differ as to what will come next. Will the tariffs hold? If not, when will they change? During this administration? Not until the next?

What is not debatable is that our order rate is down 35 percent to 40 percent since the start of the year. At other companies, too, demand is crumbling. In such a situation, companies have a fiduciary duty to bring costs down, and the one surefire way to do that is layoffs. At our company, we’ve had little choice but to lay workers off at all of our plants. Shareholders aren’t suffering — not yet — because the impact is being absorbed first by the very people Trump’s policies are meant to help.

I know that our challenges are not unique. We have relatively little exposure. In fact, our industry was singled out for assistance. In a different political environment, corporate America would be raising hell. Almost everyone in the business community thinks the tariffs are a bad idea, but CEOs are all too aware that saying so could put their job and company at risk of retaliation from the administration. Is that fear powerful enough to keep corporate America quiet even as consumers start to see prices increase and inflation begins to creep up for reasons that are entirely avoidable and independent of economic conditions?l

Time will tell. For now, I feel as though I’m watching a tsunami video that begins with a shot of a beachside paradise on a sunny day. I encourage everyone to batten down the hatches, because a big, bad wave is coming.
