November 9, 20241 yr special. and he’s been better than advertised. he’s already shown that he’s more than just a scorer. he’s silky smooth, he gives great effort on both ends, he’s got really nice vision, and he’s under control at all times. he’s easily our most polished freshman since KD. he’s the kind of guy who can lead a roster like this on a deep tourney run as a freshman. really looking forward to watching him hope for his one season on the 40. 🤘🏼 Edited November 9, 20241 yr by Derka
November 9, 20241 yr Yep. I find myself watching Texas basketball in the same way I watch the Mavs. I want Tre (or Luka) to have an assist, rebound, or basket on every possession.
November 9, 20241 yr Tre looks to be moving in stealth mode . Makes it look easy. he quietly goes about his business. Nearly dropping 30 a game. I won’t be surprised if he gets 50 once or twice just for fun
November 9, 20241 yr Author x/post: i would never compare anyone to jamal crawford in terms of handles, but Tre has that same lanky frame and ability to dribble low to the ground despite being a taller guard.

November 9, 20241 yr I mean it could happen. Brandon Miller may have gone for 50 in like an overtime or double OT game? *nah - looks like 41 was his highest and I remember that was a huge deal. It's almost impossible in a league like the SEC. Any cupcake on your schedule you aren't going to be in there for garbage time. Edited November 9, 20241 yr by ztejas
November 10, 20241 yr He's actually from Garland. He just went to Lake Highlands because his Dad coached there. Edited November 10, 20241 yr by Catdaddyhorn

November 11, 20241 yr Absolute stud. He’s working his way into the top five of an absolutely loaded draft. He’s a walking bucket. Great shot mechanics. Great range. Great handles. Really good finisher at the rim. Gets his stuff in the flow off the offense and doesn’t force anything. Good effort on defense. Way better than advertised.

Kid might be the most skilled sophomore out of Texas High schools that I've seen in a longtime. January 14Jan 14 ESPN's latest big board draft rankings 1. Cooper Flagg, SF/PF, Duke 2. Dylan Harper, PG/SG, Rutgers 3. Ace Bailey, SG/SF, Rutgers 4. VJ Edgecombe, SG, Baylor 5. Nolan Traore, PG, Saint-Quentin 6. Kon Knueppel, SG/SF, Duke 7. Egor Demin, PG/SG, BYU 8. Kasparas Jakucionis, PG, Illinois 9. Khaman Maluach, C, Duke 10. Tre Johnson, SG, Texas -Height: 6-6 | Age: 18.7 | Prev. rank: 14 One of the most talented scorers in the class, Johnson is taking on a huge workload at Texas, which has predictably led to some ups and downs. A gifted athlete with an aggressive mentality, Johnson has shot the ball well from distance (43% from 3 on seven attempts per game) and been key to Texas' good start 921 points on 48% from the field). His mix of size and fluid athleticism in the backcourt makes him a difficult cover, with a range of ways to score from all over the floor. The big-picture concern with Johnson's projection is whether his style of play will be conducive to winning basketball in an NBA context, due to the number of tough shots he takes, and bouts of tunnel vision and questionable decision-making. He's not adding much value yet on the defensive end to prop that up. Johnson has displayed these shot-happy tendencies for some time, and it's unclear how it will translate in a situation where he's not given the green light to constantly shoot. His gifts are obvious, but teams will be working to figure out how his game scales down if and when he's not the focal point of an offense. Their latest mock draft has him going at pick 9 to the Nets.
January 26Jan 26 Author tre johnson is legitimately up there with kevin durant and jim krivacs as the best shooters in Texas history. his shot mechanics are damn near flawless, and with his height, length, and athleticism he can get his shot from anywhere. it sucks for us fans that we won’t get to watch him develop into a NPOY candidate over 2-3 years, but assuming he gets the proper coaching and continues to grow, he is going to be in the NBA for the next 15 years to come. he’s a seriously special player, the kind that truly doesn’t come along often. i’m going to really appreciate watching him as long as he’s here.

His scoring arsenal for a 19 year old is unreal. One of the best I've ever seen. He takes care of the ball and has pretty good shot selection for what he's being asked to do on this team. It also seems like he gets better as the game goes on which is a sign of maturity and BBIQ that is again rare for freshmen. Leading the SEC in scoring on 45/38/87 splits (18.8 ppg). He's a bit of a 2/3 tweener and doesn't defend or rebound past his frame - I think those are the main question marks at the next level. If he can become a replacement-level defender at the 3 spot to give coaches some lineup flexibility with him - like you said - he will have a very long career with all-star upside. Jalen Green feels like a decent comp but Tre is a bit bigger and frankly much more polished already than Green was. He probably isn't quite the athlete Green is. Edited January 26Jan 26 by ztejas
January 26Jan 26 Tre’s draft profile, measurables, and stats aren’t that different from Klay Thompson coming out of college. If he can get drafted by someone who will develop him as a defender, it will help his all around game. He is a very aggressive competitor, but it needs to be channeled.
January 26Jan 26 Hey @Rex Kramer - care to revisit your prediction that Tre would be a JAG at the college level from several years back
January 26Jan 26 Tre is much more talented than Klay. Klay played 3 seasons in college. But if he could be 70% of the defender that Klay was he'll be just fine.

February 16Feb 16 Just now, Derka said: only flagg and broome do. they’re way out ahead of everybody. should be tight race. Thanks. I don't really have the bandwidth (or the interest) in following college ball nationally. Would think that 1st team SEC is very much in the cards for him still.
February 16Feb 16 Author if broome hadn’t missed time he’d be dead even (or possibly ahead of) cooper flagg.
February 16Feb 16 Author walter clayton, zakai zeigler, wade taylor, tre johnson, mark sears, and jason edwards all fighting for two spots on the all-sec first team. gonna be tough for tre to crack that. he’s probably got freshman of the year locked up however, and there’s some pretty damn good freshmen in this league. Edited February 16Feb 16 by Derka
February 16Feb 16 I think he has moved into the top 5 now. He could be a no 3 depending on the team. I think it's Flagg, Harper and then open for the taking.
February 16Feb 16 Author tre reminds me some of brandon jennings. just very smooth, able to hit really rough jumpers, and can score from all three levels.

That's the guard lineup, right? Just put Tre as a SF. The leading scorer in a conference as good as this should make first-team all conference. Especially when the dude is carrying a borderline tournament team and putting up damn good shooting numbers. After tonight he is going: 19.8 PPG (conference lead) / 3.2 RPG / 2.6 APG .438 FG% / .373 3P% / .876 FT% - .566 TS% And Texas is through the toughest part of its schedule. He could bump those numbers down the stretch, and Lord knows he's only getting better and works his fucking ass off.

Jennings was fucking tiny, though, man. Tre is a polished three level scorer at 6'6" at 19. I struggle to find a great comp because he is really unique in that regard. Again - I think NBA GMs are high if this dude slips past 5. Then again there are a lot of really fucking stupid NBA teams out there.
February 16Feb 16 Reminds me of a James Harden starter kit. Athletic but not the most explosive. Strong as hell, shot maker/creator at all three levels.
