what exactly? of all people in the world, what does even a malicious politically motivated d.o.j. going to possibly be able to get jack smith on? or alvin bragg?

what do you expect a grand jury to indict them on?

Alvin Bragg works for the state of NY. Actually, he doesn't even work for the state of NY. He works for the city of Manhattan. Not sure what Gaetz is going to do to the guy.

I don’t really have the inclination to think it through. But, I’ve seen some things up close in my time and a motivated prosecutor has a lot of power.  Kind of like when they go after someone for something and they turn over every rock and find some transaction and label it tax fraud even though it had nothing to do with why they were looking at them in the first place.
Sometimes I wish people really understood what goes on in the justice system. You probably think judges are impartial too, right?

There's no payoff to paying this much attention to this stuff.  None of it matters, we can't change it, we all need to log off and just hope there's a nationwide "vibe" necessitating change in 2026/2028.

I am confident that 95% of Americans cant name more than 4 supreme court justices. It's crazy. I know tons of "smart" people that cannot do this.

well, he could open a federal investigation of him if he broke federal laws.

i am not aware that prosecuting a suspected felon, prevailing in a jury trial, and getting 34 felony convictions against said defendant is a federal crime.

yet.

Yes. I'm operating under the notion that he hasn't in fact broken any federal laws. Technically anyone who broke federal laws might get fucked by Gaetz.

he can tie up doj resources investigating jack smith all he wants. that's for sure. he may even get a friendly judge to sign off on an fbi warrant to go rearrange his house and harass smith (though i doubt it).

but anyone that knows anything about jack smith knows that there is nowhere to go with any of it and getting a grand jury to indict him for jaywalking will be a real challenge.

Read about Andy McCabe. Read about how Barr fucked around with Cohen when he wouldn’t agree to not write a book.  Here is something from today.

Sure, but you understand that just being under investigation can cause someone to expend a significant amount of resources.

So we have a guy who’s never really practiced law as our country’s head attorney. And we have an attorney who’s never practiced medicine at any level as our chief medical expert.

mccabe arguably violated federal law while at the fbi authorizing improper releases and was fired. i don't doubt that gaetz would fire smith.

that said, substantially more skilled and higher quality u.s. attorneys than matt fucking gaetz tried their damndest to get him indicted by a grand jury and the grand jury refused to do so and the feds were left holding their dicks.

also, jack smith is not andrew mccabe.

In a grotesque way, you are correct.  It would be funny as fuck if we weren't talking bout the government of our country.

We might hope we're going to find out how little department heads really matter in the grand scheme of things because civil servants do all the real work.  But then there's that Schedule F/P2025 thing.

Bingo - I think we're about to see how dysfunctional our govt truly is when putting the dumbest of the dumb as these dept heads barely moves the needle.  It's pegged at zero or damn close already in many instances.  See POTUS for starters as Trump part 1.

Yup, Feds have unlimited money and time.  Person under investigation has to spend their own time and money defending themselves.

once they are indicted and being prosecuted. not really to be investigated.

especially when there's absolutely nothing there.

the more concerning thing to me about gaetz being in charge of the doj is not politically motivated revenge investigations, it is incompetence in actually investigating and prosecuting real crimes mixed with a healthy dose of corruption and an unwillingness to pursue actual crimes stemming from said corruption.

i would not be surprised if gaetz got outwitted by el chapo's kid and el mayo in the most slam dunk trial of all time.

Prosecutors (and judges) have very strong (bigly, huuuge) immunity from civil and criminal action.

Some of the shit that drove us nuts with Trump is about to prove its worth in the general case.

Basically, the fact that the indictment was not dismissed, and the jury convicted, completely isolates them from civil and criminal liability.

Well, the AG normally isn't involved in prosecution, either for or against, other than to approve or disapprove certain prosecutorial decisions.

The worry really is that the DOJ is the enforcement arm, mostly civil, for most of the agencies and things like civil and voting rights, etc. and it will therefore do a big fat nothing.

Of course, if he runs off all the good "street level" lawyers, we'll have a problem.

Well, if after granting POTUS, or this POTUS very strong immunity, it will at least be laughably ironic if they start cutting back everyone else's.

Wondering what RFK Jr.’s stance is on 64oz Big Gulps in New York, I remember there was some kind of debate on those.

I don’t claim that. The 17 year olds he had sex with does.
