Hooray, raw milk is a vehicle for bird flu transmission! It's a good thing we have a standard of pasteruization to protect against such spread of diseases.

For context, we have already been observing bird flu in raw milk bound for shelves

Most stores won't sell it even if this is allowed to pass because of the legal liability (it's been through the legislature multiple times in recent years and was always shot down). You just think we see a lot of recalls with grocery stores, but raw milk can really fuck people up.

What's the grift here? I've heard Republicans pushing this raw milk thing, but I don't understand why. Is there some sort of raw milk lobbying group I'm not aware of?

Not to go CR, but it's tied to the current political trend of radical oppositional defiance disorder.  The reason to want to fight for raw milk on the shelves is because "they" don't presently allow it.  It's not much more complicated than that.

We are days away from people fighting for the right to eat actual shit wherever they want, because "you can't tell me what to do."  And to truly note that this isn't CR, the fact that you're seeing similar behavior on the right as you used to see on the far left (hippies who weren't gonna follow the man's rules) is important -- horseshoe theory and all that.

It’s the patented Dunning Kruger Diet, contrarian stupidity for morons who look to Joe Rogan for medical advice. But as an added bonus: raw milk is currently a vector for spreading mammal-adapted bird flu, so this particular stupidity might kick off a plague that would make Covid-19 look like seasonal allergies.

We had this hippie base player who used to take a shit in a bowl and then use it to fertilize his garden.  When we informed him of E. coli, he smiled and nodded and then went back to talking about how good his corn grew.  Which devolved into more scatalogical humor, as you might have predicted.

Don't know if he ever got sick, but I can't imagine carrying bowls of his own dookie around did him any health favors. /csb

Frankly he probably had an immune system firing on all cylinders from constant low dose exposure to bacteria A to Z.

That’s NOT an endorsement for drinking raw milk or putting your shit in your own garden.

There has been a push to take fluoride out of the drinking water despite its dramatic impact on caries prevention.  I thought that was coming from anti-vaxers though. And those people are a mixture of left and right wackos.

If the bird flu that made the leap to cows gets spread widely to humans through the raw milk dairies, I imagine a lot of people might have their immune systems tested.

Milk is such a weird thing - we were not meant to drink it, it’s meant for baby calves to fatten up (if you’re a heavy milk drinker, go off it and watch some weight drop).  Over 65% of people in the world are lactose intolerant to some degree as it is - especially Asians, Africans, Native Americans, even quite a few Hispanics (which ties into the pre-Spanish colonization).

But here we are.  I have a conspiracy theorist sis-in-law who thinks we poison ourselves with pasteurized milk, and she drinks a lot of raw milk. A lot.  She has multiple farms up by Waco and down by Luling that she gets all of her raw dairy stuff from (3-4 places).  She used to have more, but I jokingly told her that every farm she buys raw milk or whatever from, she should ask the owners to consume whatever they are selling with her and if they don’t, they aren’t true believers.  Not surprisingly, about half the places she used to use, the owners wouldn’t drink a glass.

If this bird flu shit takes off because of these people,, it will truly be Darwin in action.

I have a conspiracy theorist sis-in-law who thinks we poison ourselves with pasteurized milk - right winger or left? Of the conspiracy theorists that I know one is a libertarian, one voted for Harris (but may not be liberal), and one is a holistic nut (who I think is right wing as she was against the Covid vaccine and couldn't figure out why she got so sick, but who knows).

The funny thing to me is that I have a ton of holistic nut patients who are annoying as fuck, but they all like me, presumably because I listen to their BS and don't try to argue.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/02/health/raw-farm-raw-milk-products-distribution-suspended-california/index.html

Distribution of Raw Farm raw milk products has been suspended after bird flu virus was found in milk samples, the California Department of Food and Agriculture said.

“All Raw Farm operations are currently under quarantine, from herds to bottled product, which means that all raw milk product distribution is suspended,” Steve Lyle, director of public affairs for the agency, said in a statement on Monday.

Quote

CDFA dairy inspectors sampled milk from bottled products and bulk milk storage at Raw Farm’s bottling facility on Wednesday, Nov 27, and laboratory test results made known on November 28 showed the presence of the bird flu virus. All milk tested by CDFA remained at the Raw Farm plant and was not released to consumers.”

Federal, state and county officials are continuing to investigate, Lyle said.

Quote

California health officials previously warned consumers not to drink two lots of recalled Raw Farm products — lot code 20241119 with a best-by date of 12/07/2024 and lot code 20241109 with a best-by date of November 27 — after testing identified bird flu virus in the milk.

In information sent to CNN, Raw Farm said products from before state testing may still be on store shelves but no new supply will be added until the quarantine is lifted. There are no signs of symptoms of bird flu in the dairy herd, it said.

As bird flu has spread among poultry and cattle in the US this year, raw milk has seen a new wave of interest and some high-profile supporters, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Raw milk was on a laundry list of items that faced “aggressive suppression” by the US Food and Drug Administration, Kennedy said in a post on X in October. In a fact sheet shared with CNN on Monday, Raw Farm said its CEO, Mark McAfee, “has been asked by the RFK transition team to apply for the position of ‘FDA advisor on Raw Milk Policy and Standards Development.’ ” CNN has reached out to the Trump transition team for comment.

The guy whose company has a problem with bird flu getting into its milk supply and is under quarantine has been tapped to…checks notes….be the “FDA advisor on Raw Milk Policy and Standards Development”.

Pasteurized milk goes through a heating process that kills harmful bacteria. Raw milk is not pasteurized and can carry disease-causing pathogens such as listeria, campylobacter, salmonella, E. coli and bird flu virus, according to the California Department of Public Health. Anyone can get sick from raw milk, but children, older adults, pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become ill. Past outbreaks linked to consumption of raw milk or raw milk products involved miscarriages, still births, kidney failure and deaths.

It used to kill a shitload of people before pasteurization. If you look through the records, it contributed to a lot of child deaths in the 1800s (not as many records before that). I’ve seen over half-a-dozen such deaths in the immediate siblings/children of my ancestors.   At least these days, modern medicine can save a lot of these people.

But the fucking bird flu is here now.  Fingers crossed it peters out before things go south on us.

Fingers crossed it kills/incapacitates quickly enough, or that a major symptom of it is that it increases the desire to stay home and not talk to anybody so that any dumb motherfuckers drinking raw milk don't spread it to the rest of us.

Unlike COVID whose major symptoms include a need to fucking travel cross-country and hang out in crowds of people.

And we got this going for us - they are still finding Anthrax at WWII sites in China formerly run by Japan's Unit 731. Thankfully most of this stuff was destroyed during or right after the war.

And with respect, I'll say you're going a bit hard on milk.  Medieval northern Europeans would not have survived the winter without fresh milk.  Very difficult to get all the nutrients they needed without it.  No fresh fruit, limited vegetables, etc.

And I've read white folks have higher lactose tolerance than others because of it.  A lactose-intolerant baby back then did not survive long.  Major selection pressure.
