Wife was in a minor accident. Other party was 100% at fault. Allstate tried to blame 20% on her. We ended up gong through our insurance and got our decutable back.

So - going forward, I want her to have a dash cam. There are a ton on the market and I have no idea where to start.

Thank!

Have a nexar one with both modules and really enjoy it. Simple and efficient and while the price is on the high side, it's worth it.

You can see interior and exterior forward and depending on how you set up the interior camera, you can see rear as well.  So many issues can be solved with a dash camera, video don't lie.

I've been thinking about it but I wouldn't want to subscribe to a service. I would want it recording to a local memory card that only retains X hours of video and continuously overwrites. I think some devices record 24/7 so at least you might get some footage if someone messes with your car. so perhaps it is worth pushing the video to the internet in case of car theft.

Good information and advice there - along with sales (and installation if you're in central Texas).

We have Blackvue or Thinkware cams in all our vehicles.

I have a VanTrue (used it for 6 months) and it works fine and has good features.

I've used a bunch of Viofo cams, will continue to use them. Depending what car you have, Dongar has mirror power taps that make it plug and play no wiring install.

I have VIOFO 119 and 119 minion my two cars.

They work well enough and easy to install.

I don’t care much for the phone app.

If you use parking mode they will shorten your battery lifespan, even with their voltage cutoffs. On newer cars you'll usually get battery or charge system faults as well. You need to install a separate dash cam battery if you want to use parking mode. Otherwise, no effect on car battery.

Yeah. I don’t use parking mode. The cameras come on when the car turns on.

No issues on my truck but I've got dual batteries. If you want to know the actual draw, perform a parasitic draw  test before after install. Takes 5 minutes if you have a multimeter.

This sounds like a good idea for my 15yo that is about to start driving.  Can the hardware be hidden in the vehicle?

Not really as the camera needs a clear view to see forward and in the cabin. I have mine mounted behind my rear view mirror, which is easier in trucks due to space. However, they make smaller camera that could be hidden, I suppose.

I have a Vantrue n4 pro, it’s a nice unit. Vio are great economy models.
