This could go in any number of different threads, but given what we're doing to the planet, I've occasionally wondered if humanity is just a terraforming tool for some long-lived and technologically advanced underwater species - perhaps direct relatives (or employers?) of the octopus.

This article and it's predictions and conclusions (scientifically disreputable source acknowledged) all seem pretty straightforward that if humanity is wiped out, the octopus is in the on-deck circle for control of the planet.

Not sure if you're referring to me or Tim Coulson (I haven't; can't speak to Coulson...), but it's not exactly a huge leap for a stoned brain to consider what sort of unknown extraterrestrial entity might have a vested interest in us ruining our planet by melting the ice caps.

An equally obvious criticism is that any space-faring civilization could likely microwave Earth more easily and efficiently that planting the seeds of humanity and letting evolution do the rest, but I would counter that the reign of humanity (and perhaps even the existence of Earth itself - Big Bang was 14 billion years ago, while Earth is "only" 4.5 billion years old) is pretty goddamn brief in a cosmic time scale.

Earth did just fine without a civilization, and will likely do just fine without one when we eventually crash-land.

But I do hope octopi are still around.

Can an octopus beat an orca?

It can hold 8 switchblades.

With the camouflaging ability of the octopus, there could be a species out there that’s hundreds of feet long and we wouldn’t know it unless it wanted us to.

I won't eat octopus in restaurants.

Carlin I believe had a bit about the earth going through the evolutionary process simply because it wanted plastics. That once complete it would shake us off like a bad case of fleas.

Maybe the octopus wanted plastics and the earth obliged. I'm good with that, and okay as such with our forthcoming demise.

It's been a good run for we monkey kind.

Ha! Same on all counts...

I like octopus, but gave up eating it a long time ago. They're just too cool and too smart for me to not be a little bothered by it. I've converted a few people along the way.

I also realize and acknowledge that makes me a bit of a hypocrite because I still eat plenty of pork products, and pigs are pretty smart too.

Fuck y'all.  I'd eat filet o' human if 1) it was delicious and 2) it was on the menu.

Also, my decision to be completely amoral going forward is going to lead to a pretty enjoyable lifestyle.

True, but I thought switchblades went better with the 8-armed leather jacket.

You're full of shit.

I know your finicky ass would demand wild raised, lean, South or Central American athletic human and you'd be picky about the cut.

Like you'd just eat any old "Murican blend" cut of soilent green.

Own it you food snob!

You talking like probing and shit?

Nah.

But ... just in case I'll  stock up on spinach and study Popeye's moves vs the Octopus. Mostly jabs and then one super fast, spinny wind up uppercut should save me.

I'm not sure how or why you inferred that I'm somehow opposed to cannibalism.

Most animals that we eat are actually domesticated for food production and so their life would not exist but for being livestock. And it’s on that distinction that I decide it’s different. But it does make me want more humane treatment as they are raised before their way to the end.

If you're not familiar with Temple Grandin take a look at her Wiki below. I saw her speak a the Chicago Public Library when I lived there. She was promoting one of her books, and just as importantly her cause. She's an extremely interesting person, on spectrum and walks the walk she talks. I won't dive too deep into what she advocates as it's complex as is her logic and the cool story of how she came to her conclusions. In short..

Humane Treatment+Humane Slaughter = Reduced operational cost AND increased quality of product. Which, at the end, is more profit. Of course, it's been over a decade so her views/ideas and the realities of the beef industry may well have changed. I should look back into my damn self.

Octopus is delicious. Sounds like we aren't gonna run this planet for much longer so I am gonna eat every animal I can while I still can.

I agree. And I'm not saying we even have to kill them.
