I ducked out in the middle of a funeral today to 1. avoid the rosary, and 2. to go grab a dozen tamales and sonic drink. Both places are within 5 mins of the funeral home.

Came back, waited for them to wrap up then attended the graveside services.

damn those tamales are good. I was 2.5 hrs from home and this was my chance to buy some great tamales. place closes at 2. i got there 1:30

If you don't go to your friend's funerals, then they won't go to yours.

You are definitely the asshole.  But you also made the right call.

that depends how delicious the tamales were

Pictures of said tamales? For science

How close a relative?  Barring immediate or near-immediate family, chances are good that no one noticed you missing. Hence, NTA.

someone's dead and you slip out for tamales?  you're a real piece of work, you know that?  un-fucking-believable.

What were? The tamales? Ask @BurntEyes what he would do for tamales.

You're the real asshole here. I didn't need to be brought back into this thread. Start a debate with @futuremanabout the future of tamale kind.

It'll be super productive.

Jackass!

I came here because I thought there were ABIA delays.

Evidently...not.

Eat hearty, my friend.

In my honest opinion, you don’t really seem to have cared about attending to actually pay your respects, but rather out of a sense of obligation, or just to make sure that you were seen to have been there.  In either case, it would probably have been more honest to just not have gone at all.

I am craving some tamales now though.

No one loved tamales more than Jesus Christ himself -- it's in the Bible.  So you just did what Jesus would have done.

i try to attend all services / funerals. Don’t always stay for the full services.

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and thus should partake in the saving grace of Tamales”

(I am paraphrasing but it is something along those lines)

I think a beer would have been better than Sonic drink but C’est la vie

I skipped my daughter's 9th birthday party to play golf and do cocaine at the winstar

Follow up question in order to determine this:

a) Did the decedent love tamales? If so, you were simply paying respects the way he/she would have appreciated.

b) If they did not, did you at least bring some tamales back to give out to the bereaved family? "I'm so sorry for your loss. Would you like bean and cheese, chicken or pork?"

I feel like you just made an appropriate twist to the old adage, "he died doing what he loved" into "he died, I did something I love"

@gofuckyourself I feel like anything other than pork is a bit of a dishonor to the deceased.

If they asked you where you went, just tell you went to take a shit. The men will understand. The women will be jealous cause they all haven't shit for days.

they didn't have the rosary the night before?

also, assuming it was Catholic, you are not the asshole for ducking out on that

The fact that this was NOT the first reply truly convinces me that the whole world has gone to hell, and a meteor is what we deserve.

Perhaps you missed the part where he said the tamales were really good.

I feel like I could get brisket to draft a will for me pro burrito if it included clause about having a tamale lady and tray of allsups chimichangas at my funeral

It is what they wanted. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry, I didn't read any posts; only saw the thread title and jumped in to comment.

If you are posting on Surly, and even moreso if you start a thread then the odds are........ wait for it......

Beat me to it. Although some tamaleistas make better chicken than pork.

3 putt showed up, paid his respects, and opted out of a more dogmatic portion of the services.

Who cares. The thing about funerals is that the person you are attending for is, well, they're not exactly going to judge you.
