The singing was excessive, and I felt it could have been much better executed by restricting the singing to major plot points instead of every minor plot change. That could have cut the run time by about 30 minutes and made it a more enjoyable watch. They were not shy with the political allegory, way more apparent that the original wizard of Oz. The animals representing migrants and minorities, the Asian Sorcery fascism enabler representing Trump, fox news, and Republicans, and the wizard representing Zuckerberg, Musk, Bezos, Koch's, Thiel, etc. Oh, for fuck's sake.

He was really anticipating seeing it and he said it lived up to his expectations. This is a movie that is not really one for me so I am going to take his word for this being a great experience. He is not prone to hyperbole either which makes me think it must have really been a fantastic movie.
December 2, 20241 yr Saw it this weekend and really enjoyed it. I've seen it live multiple times and nothing can beat a live musical when it's done well... you can feel the music and it's an awesome experience, but this came pretty close. Looking forward to the 2nd part.

The 2nd half of the musical is not as long so I would imagine they are going to pad for time with more story and maybe having more with Dorothy. There are going to be 2 new songs added. But this is Wizard of Oz adjacent like Maleficent with Sleeping Beauty adjacent.

Yeah... yeah, quoted myself but it was too late to edit my spoiler above. Spoiler We already saw the lion's origin story in part 1, but many folks might have missed it. This will get confirmed in part 2 as well.
December 5, 20241 yr I think we're going to get a Wizard of Oz story reboot in part 2. And to answer an above question, this is more Wizard of Oz adjacent where it's a retelling of the story similar to Maleficent was a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It's not a prequel. More like an alternate version.

More like an alternate version. It's both... so far we've been given a lot of backstory leading up to the events of "The Wizard of Oz" and that will continue for most of part two, so that is all prequel. Towards the end of part two, we will get a story concurrent with the events of TWOZ from a different perspective. There are years and years between the end of part one and TWOZ.

December 7, 20241 yr I'm going to see it tomorrow. I've never seen the stage version. My friend sent me this, and the first part is definitely me right now, so we'll see if I end up crying at the end like this guy. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTYy57Qst/

January 7Jan 7 I read the book when it first came out. Never saw the show. The movie was very well done. The themes of the book are readily apparent in the movie. Part of the reason I never saw the musical is I didn’t know how well those themes would translate. Obviously, better than I thought they would.
January 7Jan 7 There’s a podium of 3-5 best female music artists (vocals only) currently active, this and the video below solidified Ariana on there for me. Just absurd what comes out of that frame. Edited January 7Jan 7 by Hank_Hill
January 12Jan 12 Saw it today at the theater with my fiancé. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I really paid attention to things based upon what I learned about it on this thread. Ready for part 2.

One distracting thing is that the love interest for both the witches is clearly super gay and plays the role that way. To the point I was expecting it to be a plot point for him to end up with a guy. Obviously plenty of leading men in Hollywood have been gay and played straight heartthrobs successfully but it’s just super distracting in this movie because he very clearly does not like women. December 8Dec 8 I have now taken my daughter to see both of these and they were the longest 4000 hours of my life. I simply do not understand why anybody would enjoy this.
December 8Dec 8 My wife said the same thing about Top Gun. In both cases, the movie makes no sense to folks outside its target audience.

I am secure enough to enjoy a decent musical for what it is even if it isn’t the flick I’d choose first. That is where this fails, a musical isn’t doing it right if I exit the theatre and am not humming one of the numbers. Music was forgettable and boring.
December 9Dec 9 Defying gravity is ... fine. Everything else is completely terrible. Just annoying noise.

December 9Dec 9 I enjoyed that they tried to pass off two gay people as being in love with each other and somehow made the guy look even more gay in the process. The first one was good. The 2nd felt like it was going through the motions.
December 9Dec 9 I'm a sucker for musicals, so I thought it was OK, but the first one is much better with better songs and more humor. Not much fun in the second one.
December 9Dec 9 It was... fine. I mentioned earlier in the thread that the second act felt rushed on stage, so I guess I liked that they fleshed it out a bit more. There's more connective material between the scenes here to make the sequence of events make more sense. The two additional musical numbers ("No Place Like Home" and "Girl in a Bubble" were absolutely forgettable. That said, if you think "For Good" is annoying noise, you have no heart. I did enjoy that they got Ryan Reynolds to cameo as Scarecrow at the end. I've seen rumors online that the moneygrubbing studio is talking about "expanding the universe" in a spin-off about one of the characters or a sequel. Please, God no.

Please, God no. Those stories were coming out mostly after the huge opening weekend box office. But since then, the box office numbers have tanked when compared with the first one, so I wonder if they may have second thoughts about developing the universe further.
December 9Dec 9 Norm’s SNL skits on musicals completely ruined musicals for me. I just can’t take them seriously. Same with what Walk Hard did with musical biopics.

December 9Dec 9 That would be very few threads since he hates pretty much everything. Let me scan the first page of this board….. Pluribus, Stranger Things, Severance, Chair Company, Sopranos, Fallout, Task….. that’s just a quick peak of recent threads and not counting Star Trek, Star Wars mega type threads. If you’re going to be a dick for no reason, at least try to make it sensical.
