November 27, 20241 yr First one had a lot of magic for the kids. This one is a lot closer to Frozen 2 than Toy Story 2. Evidently it was supposed to be TV series that they re-rigged into a movie because Disney needed something in the box office given the losing streak they were on. You could tell. There are some giant electric eels that just appear, are there for a scene, are fought with, then are gone. What the hell was that all about? Then you understand it was probably some bad guy in one episode of a series. Kids left the first one singing all the songs. This one felt like level of quality of songs.

I've heard a lot of similar takes about this one, which sucks cause the first one was a bright spot for recent Disney movies. The Bolded, however is baffling a bit. They literally have had the biggest Box office of the year with Inside Out 2 and Deadpool/Wolverine being the top 2 grossing movies this year. Like by a LOT(the only movies this year to crack 1 billion)
November 27, 20241 yr Author Re:Disney’s tough time. Who knows if that motivation is real or not but I think they were referring to 2023 Disney bombs. They (publicly) said Moana 2 would be big screen Feb 2024. So the guess was it was a reaction to earlier bombs and 2023 was a rough year for Disney. https://m.imdb.com/news/ni64568982/
November 27, 20241 yr This was supposed to be a Disney+ show and was reworked so Disney could have a Thanksgiving release like they do every year. It will still do good numbers. It already did 11M in previews.

Lin-Manuel Miranda composed the songs for the first film. Didn’t work on Moana II. I think we discovered the problem.
November 28, 20241 yr Just saw it, was kind of surprised how ADHD it was. It felt like a Frankenstein script with a bunch of different scripts cut up and slapped together without any thoughts of how it flows as a story. There were a lot of quick cuts to completely different locations without any transition. They would switch locations and conversation topic without any transition or establishing shots, felt really weird and disjointed. There were a lot of songs, and I honestly can't remember any of them. I will check YouTube later to figure out which one has our kids excited and dancing and report back. There was 1 they really really liked when the other lady that lives in the big clam was singing.

November 28, 20241 yr Lin Manuel also wrote a horrible rap for the Little Mermaid live action so maybe let's not kiss his ass too much. He like many a prolific artist needs someone to tell him "no" every once in a while.

This year that group is taking in less overall money, but are profit positive.
November 28, 20241 yr I took the kids yesterday-it’s not terrible but isn’t going to be a classic like its predecessor.

The main characters were already deeply developed in the first one, this one is just about action and progressing the story. I do think there was a missed opportunity to go into a bit more depth on the god who sunk the island and why he trapped the other demigod there in the clam, but that wasn't really the point of what was going on like the first movie where the god was a main part of the story restoring the world as it was etc. Tafiti was only in the movie for like 1m45s but the lore was the entire movie. The other boat characters were just extras, they aren't main characters that contributed much except for the plot that moana has become a leader of people and they are willing to follow her to the end and that she was willing to sacrifice everything in order to fulfill her role as THE wayfinder. My 5 year old just told me his favorite part of the movie was "The songs and Maui was his favorite" Also if you don't think this is a banger idk what to tell you. Absolute banger. The point of this movie isn't to be a standalone classic. What standalone sequel is there that's better than the original story?

And she has a great voice.
November 30, 20241 yr Well it made a fuck ton of money so smart move by Disney Spoiler Big step down from the 1st in quality, there was no "You're Welcome" , "Shiny" or "How Far I'll Go" this time around as most of the songs were meh. The side characters weren't any good and there was no conflict. Also nothing at all seems to happen in this movie, they fight a cloud and then it ends in a cliffhanger for season 2. December 2, 20241 yr We liked it. It's a Disney sequel so it's not exactly treading new ground. Toy Story 2 and 3 are the only ones that really did that and those were Pixar. A couple of the songs were good and I didn't mind the main characters. It's definitely setting up Moana 3. I believe the genesis of this was the Disney+ were showing Bob Iger what they had for 2024 and beyond when he watched this and asked them why it wasn't a movie versus a Disney+ series. It didn't have any absolute bangers like this one that might be one of the best sequences Disney has come up with in a long while. It was very Frozen 2 in that regard. Decent but not something we'll rewatch like the first one. But that's true for most Disney sequels. Edited December 2, 20241 yr by mdmost
December 4, 20241 yr Best song from original Moana for sure. All those YouTube views of that video on my phone are definitely because my 2 year-old wanted to hear it all the time, and not because I want to imagine I'm exploring the remote Pacific hundreds of years ago for 2 minutes instead of being trapped in a concrete hellscape.

Sidebar to the thread, pick up the book about Captain Cook's final voyage, A Wide Wide Sea. It's great and will scratch that itch. Edited December 4, 20241 yr by mdmost
December 4, 20241 yr I've read Blood & Thunder and On Frozen Ground, so I definitely like the author. Newborn and toddler have my brain feeling like mush at the moment, but one day soon I'll be ready to put down my phone and read a real book again. Back to Moana II discussion...

My 4 and 3 year old watch Moana at least 3x/week. They laugh like hell when I sing the song and do my best impression of the dances. lol

December 16, 20241 yr Finally went to see this yesterday with the kids. This movie was terrible. It lacked everything that made the first movie so great. The songs were written like a bad LMM tribute band. The plot had zero cohesion. The bad guy was.... a storm? What was the conflict? Why did they need to find the island or connect with other people when things seemed to be going great for their people on their island? What was the existential threat? This film was a total mess.
January 19Jan 19 Wouldn’t you like to go back in time to the 1990s and flash that headline up on a screen at a comic book convention?
March 13Mar 13 For those of you with little kids, Moana 2 is now on Disney+ as of yesterday. I was treated to 2 consecutive viewings last night and started another this morning when my 4 yr old awoke. Edited March 13Mar 13 by Trey3216
March 13Mar 13 Watched it with my kids at the Gatesville Drive-In this weekend. I did not enjoy it. Music wasn't near as good. Story and writing were worse. Looks like there will be a 3rd. I'll pass.
March 13Mar 13 Maybe I was just harking back to a time when my kids were younger during the first Moana, but I actually enjoyed this movie.

March 13Mar 13 It wasn't nearly as good as the first...but it's far from bad. Was pretty entertaining. The music wasn't nearly as good, of course.
March 13Mar 13 This title sounds like a porn parody.Italy agrees!https://variety.com/2016/film/global/disney-changes-moana-title-in-italy-where-it-has-porn-star-connotations-1201921745/
