Surly gonna light you on fire for that.  From the miniseries "True Detective," an iconic show featuring board favorite Matthew Mconnahay.

Kurds.

Who that fucking guy left hanging. So looking forward to that again…

IMO its one of the best series out there (Season 1).  Worth a watch and if you can sync the Surly recap thread per episode, it was fun to follow along.

You’re in for a heck of a ride, Brother.

Do we have our own troops on the ground fighting? Or is it US-trained troops on US-supplied artillery?

We have troops there. We’ve even straight-up fought Russians and Syrians there, and fucked them up.

If you intend to watch the later seasons I suggest watching 2 and 3 before 1. No overlap in stories/characters/actors between the three and 1 is definitely the best.

I see why those P-8's have been so busy in the eastern Med.

Looks like we need to get the Syrian rebels some of those Ukrainian naval drones.  The Black Sea should hog all the sunken Russian warship artificial reefs.  And the Med is a much better diving destination, so that's just courtesy right there - create more reefs, create more tourist opportunities.

Says right there at the top "A USAF A-10."

We've never sold them to anyone else.

Yes it does. I failed to read anything after "Warthogs in action".

The mods don't give a shit if the thread is about the middle east. Post whatever shitty info source you want, be as Islamophobic as you want as long as you don't directly attack another poster. South Korea news? They'll police that right away. Syria? Who gives a shit.

Multiple sources saying Hama fell to the rebels.

BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian insurgents entered the central city of Hama Thursday after days of intense clashes with government forces as they push forward with their week-long offensive that brought large parts of Syria under their control.

The Syrian army said it has withdrawn from Hama after insurgents broke through its defenses marking another setback for President Bashar Assad, days after losing the country’s largest city. The Syrian army said it redeployed from Hama and took positions outside the city to protect the lives of civilians.

The insurgents’s next target is likely to be the central city of Homs, the country’s third largest. Homs, which is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Hama, is the gate to the capital Damascus, Assad’s seat of power and the coastal region that is a base of support for him.

I phrased my question poorly. Are our guys actually at the frontlines doing any shooting and/or getting shot at right now?

Ground troops probably in a spotter and advisory role. Active fighting, only if needed. USAF hitting Iraqi militias heading to fight for Assad.

I haven't really paid attention to Syria in a few years--is there really a "good guys" faction to root for in this fight, or it is all just various degrees of "not as bad as Assad or ISIS."

Except for the SDF/Kurds, it’s really just “they aren’t isis.” Some are just as bad. No one in the ME comes in with clean hands.

I don’t think they can.

And it sounds like the A-10s we saw in action were basically creating a buffer between the Kurds and everybody else. I don’t know if we were directly trying to help the rebels fighting Assad, but then again if Assad falls, we have a chance to carve out a Kurdish state.

Though hope I am wrong,  a Kurdish state is not going to happen until the Turks are out of NATO and we don't have a base there. What they have as part of Iraq is as good as it will get for now. Maybe with this it can be a bit larger, but doubt it since that means changing Iraq's borders.

Maybe a Kurdish state is a bit strong of a phrase, but the current rebels going after Assad are going to be more concerned with taking over and maintaining power than trying to tangle with the US and the Kurds. Hopefully things shake out in the next month.

The problem for the Kurds is Erdoghan and Turkey.
