The Venables comparisons to Herman are accurate.  I'd say Herman is a better HC between the two though.

No no...Venables is comparable to Strong.

Venables is still a much better coach than strong. Y’all seem to forget just how dog shit we were under Chuckles.

Would love to see a reality where he didn't get fucked 2 maybe 3 games by refs he did

Not saying his Texas pecking order would change but, he may just be better than BV

3 star. Track background. Good genes. High upside. Ah the Rhule Model. We’ll see if they can nail their evaluations, retain, and develop.

Checks notes, Jerry “Puke Bucket” Schmidt is still their S&C Coach. Ok, let’s forget about player development

“The Rhule Model”. That is a strategy. For it to work you have to:

1. Actually develop players. This means elite positional coaching, and not every program does that.
2. Be patient. Rhule recruited two and three stars with traits, and developed them into all B12 and even draft picks. That took a few years. The best of these won’t show for a couple of years.
3. Have a plan for line play in the SEC? In the B12 and ACC, OL and DL can be a little less massive, because they only go up against massive, elite counterparts in a few scattered games. Not so in the SEC.

Interesting strategy

About as dog shit as Oklahoma has been under Venables. They're almost carbon copies.

We had a bad environment in total around Strong. He was a shitty coach in a tough situation.
Venables has all he needs to be much better than he is performing.

Herman was an average coach buoyed by Greg Ward at UH, then here with Sam Ehlinger.

It won’t work, but they don’t have a choice. They’re not going to beat Texas, Georgia, and Ohio State for Texas 5 stars. Fasusi might be it for a long while.

Correct. Different Derrick Johnson:

And even if they absolutely nail the Rhule Model, they're not touching us at our current level of recruiting and developing. Maybe they can catch us in any given year for a game, but we're just separating as a program right now.

With the internet, (at least mostly) legal payment for even unofficial visits, and other changes, there seems to be an increasingly open market for talent to shop schools and for schools to shop for talent. What better way to lower yourself in the eyes of all the elite talent that is clearly considering Texas and is obviously not stupid enough to go full land-thief retard than by making this the public face of and the recruiting visit picture ask of your program?

EDIT: the more schools that do this the better for us, IMO. It basically says that Texas is the standard that they bother to hate. It's like saying, "I'm a good enough and smart enough to beat that jerk Saban, doggone it-- play for me!"

Drop his nuts on fat boy’s forehead on the way to the QB.

I was just thinking it had been a while since we took a shit on the Sooners. This is very satisfying.

QB commit for them getting flip picks to FSU, but they are going after Beau Bentley from Celina.  So is LSU.

OU’s strategy is to “moneyball” this.

(In MLB, it turned out that having resources like the NYY is a better approach)

As an Oakland fan (sigh), Moneyball was great given our payroll and fan expectations.

I don't think OU fans are going to be very understanding about "Well, we were solidly competitive. Can't hope to compete with the really big boys, though."

Yeah, I get (like Texas does, I think) having a staff to sift through all the HUDL video to provide a slate of recruits for the assistant coaches to review, after basic minimal physical and athletic traits are vetted. That saves a ton of time (so the assistant can actually coach) and allows a wider net.

But, having a personnel staff prepare the list of offers? In a properly working system, the assistant actually should be a value-add in scouting, more than just a recruiting-monkey. They should be able to tell qualitatively if the player has traits that make them more or less coachable, objective metrics aside. (And it helps in signing a kid if he and his parents can tell that the assistant really wants him).

It’s like if you have ever worked for an organization that only hires “A” students. Eventually, you meet the “B” candidate that works a full time job at night while going to school, to support a family, and you pull your hair out trying to get the organization to hire this kid that you know would be a tremendous asset. Or to not hire the “A” candidate with a great resume that flippantly admits he really just wants to bide his time with your company until he can get into the industry he really wants.

On one hand, I deeply, deeply hope this is true. Because it would mean Oklahoma is still falling off their cliff and hasn't hit the bottom yet.

On the other hand, the idea that their "Football GM" is giving that kind of insight to a mish mash of individuals, and admitting their most problematic tendencies publicly makes them look so fucking toothless. How can you admit you're more willing to sniff around the Southern Miss type kids instead of big game hunting like the rest of the SEC? Even Mississippi State and South Carolina will chase big game in their own back yard.

I can't imagine going to that Meet and Greet and coming out confident as an OU fan. Holy shit they may be more cooked than A&M at this point.

Nagy telling Venables who to play is awesome. This keeps getting better and better.

My thoughts exactly. I hope Nagy turns into their version of Trent Baalke and Littlefingers his way into sticking around for the next decade and driving off any good candidate who would otherwise consider OU. No fucking way any legit, proven coach would want to step into a situation where Nagy has the higher ups' ears and is getting to decide who they have to take while operating on a shoestring budget.

Took a look at the current OU class.  They have 10 commits and from what I can tell only 1 has a Texas offer.  OL from Midlothian, Noah Best.

Was that even a legit offer?
