April 21Apr 21 That was so damn enjoyable. The musical portion was a really awesome choice and is part of why I love Ryan Coogler films. Miles Caton made a hell of debut. He joked that he'd like to be Miles Morales in the MCU. The 70mm IMAX showing was great. I haven't seen film like that in so long that the flicker effect took a while to reset in my brain and then I remembered how that used to look. The night time scenes were just so beautiful and vivid. Hats off to Coogler for shooting in IMAX.
April 21Apr 21 This movie fucks. What a world he built. Honestly, the film was best before the big showdown. I could watch some more Smoke Stack Brothers stories in this universe.

April 21Apr 21 45 million in its opening weekend. Biggest domestic opening for an original film in a decade. Going to see it in 70mm IMAX today at 4:05. Final tally was just over $48M. Good start.I was talking about the movie this weekend and I think 2 of the 10 people I talked to had even heard of it. To be fair, this is a lillywhite private school group, so they’re not scouring movie boards and podcasts, but pretty disappointing. When I told them about it, they were all really interested. It’s just crazy to me how outside of the day to day conversations movies have gotten.
April 21Apr 21 I think word of mouth is really going to help as well as large format screenings. It also is a movie that's highly rewatchable. I want to see if it now in digital to compare how it is to the film version. I also want to watch that music sequence again. My wife brought up an interesting point. Was this the first vampire movie where they wanted to make each other vampires because they genuinely loved each other and wanted to be together as a family and were visibly sad when it didn't happen? The part where Smoke stakes Annie after she's bit, Stack and Mary both cry out and not in a you killed a vampire way that other movies do. They weren't just your typical cartoon vampires. It was more because they really wanted the 4 of them to be together as a family forever. Plus, Coogler gets points again for making a villain where you kind of have to give him credit for his motivation. Remmick's point about no longer being screwed over by white society was pretty strong. Glad Delroy Lindo got another chance to shine on the big screen. Edited April 21Apr 21 by mdmost
April 22Apr 22 Saw it on 70 mm - very cool. Great movie. Terrible business model for a bar. Music was incredible.
April 23Apr 23 Really enjoyed the movie.... I've been thinking about elements of it for the entire day (just watched it last night). I described it to someone today as an Amazing, A+, hour and forty five minute movie with about 35 minutes of several other good (but lesser) movies interspersed throughout. Those other elements/scenes were good, and may have been a part of a really great movies too, but they felt out of place within this larger story. Amazing soundtrack. Best movie I've seen this year. But could have been tighter/better.

April 27Apr 27 Saw it last night, liked it. Thought it lost steam towards the end instead of picking it up Fun fact: Steinfelds real life grandpa actually was half-black, just like her character in the movie Edited April 27Apr 27 by Helobious
April 27Apr 27 Slated to do 45 million this weekend which is only a 5% drop. Already has made 161 million worldwide. This is what we need, my dudes. This is what helps original movies get made.
April 28Apr 28 Just went. Went in not really knowing anything other than the trailers and my boss saying he and his wife went and they liked it. Didn't know MBJ was playing twins. Didn't know it was about vampires. I think that's an instant classic. I liked Creed fine. Not really a Black Panther fan. Never saw Judas and the Black Messiah. This is a completely different level of film-making and I think @mdmost is hitting it on the head. It reminded me of 90s/00s Tarantino/Guy Ritchie stuff. Beautifully shot, written, acted, scored and exceedingly original and unpredictable. Just a total fucking joy to watch. That's a 3rd Oscar for Goransson barring something wacky and MBJ will have a shot at his own I think (I guess for supporting? Hard to sus that out). Also feel like this notches MBJ up a stardom level. I mean he was already an A-lister but this just felt a little different. Like he's entering that Stallone/Arnold/Bruce Willis tier.
April 28Apr 28 Author I liked how they were the SmokeStack twins. Smoke was always smoking. Stack was always counting/worried/dealing with money

April 29Apr 29 Just got home from Alamo. It was great. Solid 'A'. When they hung up the Juke Joint sign over the door I got crazy "Dusk til Dawn" vibes. I got very skittish when they started the music scene for some reason, was instantly worried this movie was about to go off the rails. (Kinda like "Sorry to Bother You", which was also great social/cultural commentary until Act 2 started.) But after about 30 seconds I started to love it. Great scene. I think the hip hop pulled me in. Michael B. Jordan did his thing. I'm impressed. Dude's a star. Surprised at the 3 or 4 LOL moments. Starting with them cutting to Stack in the car telling Sam how to put pressure like on an ice cream cone. Thought it was cool to catch Smoke's girl, who had taken a verbal jab earlier in the movie about doing her "Louisiana shit" voodoo, but at Smoke's final scene she busted out the Louisiana accent. Not sure how I missed it earlier but when she said Smoke could "hooolllld" the baby I caught that New Orleans.
April 30Apr 30 Just saw it. My apologies for Mrs. Wood (no pics), who can't separate movies from real life and reacts accordingly. About halfway through the movie, it occurred to me that I was watching an opera. A vampire opera. Good show.

April 30Apr 30 I'm a little disgusted with myself that it's only playing at the Bullock IMAX through tomorrow and it's sold out. If it's selling out the theater they should keep running it.

If it's selling out the theater they should keep running it. I saw it at the IMAX at Barton Creek mall. I know it's not the best IMAX, but the Bullock didn't get a print of the special ones that Coogler talks about in the video upthread (8-minute mark). I figured the other lesser IMAX's were enough. I did notice that it changed the aspect ratio in places, so I think it's close to the top level.
May 1May 1 9 theaters will get the IMAX 70mm print again on May 15 to May 21. I'm assuming this is due to a two week exclusive window for Thunderbolts. Those theaters include: City Walk Stadium 19 + IMAX (Los Angeles) Irvine Spectrum and IMAX (Irvine) Lincoln Square 13 + IMAX (New York) Metreon 16 + IMAX (San Francisco) Indiana State Museum (Indianapolis) Arizona Mills IMAX (Phoenix) Autonation IMAX (Ft. Lauderdale) Webb Chapel IMAX (Dallas) Colossus IMAX (Toronto)
May 1May 1 Def plan on seeing this one when time permits.. I saw a Twitter film douche saying it was a must watch in imax, yalls thoughts? This doesn't strike me as an Imaxey movie. Thunderbolts took over imax this week anyways heh
May 1May 1 It's most certainly an IMAX-ey movie. Watch the video I posted on the previous page where Coogler talks about what you'll see if you watch it on IMAX. There are multiple portions that are full aspect ratio including a great part where the camera zooms out and the full image is perfect. He shot this with an IMAX 70mm camera.

I'm sure it's marginally better in IMAX but I wouldn't not go see it just because you can't see it in IMAX. YMMV though I'm not a Twitter film douche.

There were times when it reminded me of the Nic Cage movie Mandy, with booming orchestral rock. So fun.
May 3May 3 saw today... loved loved loved the dance floor/music stuff, so good! really enjoyed it. see... this, Warfare... there ARE movies that belong on the big screen with a collective experience!
May 3May 3 I loved watching it on the Dolby screen at Clear Fork in Fort Worth - but 70mm IMAX at Webb Chapel in Dallas was so worth the hassle. They are re-releasing it there on the 15th. Highly recommend.

Fucking loved it, but definitely this. I was fine but my wife whose first language isn’t English probably missed out on 70% of the dialogue, which is unfortunate. We’ll just have to run it back.
May 7May 7 I thought the movie was fine but 1) it was so loud at the IMAX I saw it at (Barton Creek). This is becoming a recurring theme for me in movies that I see in theaters. I've quit going to the Alamo because of the chaotic screeching, especially in the previews 2) it was so loud that I ended up putting crushed up napkins in my ears as makeshift earplugs. This caused me to not catch a bunch of the dialogue. I'm going to have to wait to see it at home with subtitles turned on. Also, you kids get off my lawn.

I finally caught it yesterday at the Alamo and had the same problem, especially in the first act. I get verisimilitude, but there's something lost when stage trained Delroy Lindo doesn't get to use that amazing voice in a way that can be understood. Also, weird to see the kid from Starred Up all grown up (also another film begging for subtitles). I love that WB let Coogler make ambitious choices and that he was willing to go there. Also, Michael B Jordan might be the closest approximation to late 90's-early 2000's Tom Cruise energy. I can see him playing Jerry Maguire, Ethan Hunt, Frank TJ Mackey, Interesting reading the Variety review and the reviewer was shocked to be introduced to Wunmi Mosaku-I felt the same way after seeing her in Lovecraft Country in a more challenging role. I doubt it ends up winning many Academy Awards but the score has to get nominated and is probably going to be the betting favorite. I also noticed that Coogler gave Ludwig Goransson an EP credit. I'm sure some of that is a flex on Coogler's part, but also maybe a statement on how intertwined THIS story was with the music.
May 7May 7 You bring up Lovecraft Country and I wish more people would've watched it. Not every episode was great but when they hit, it was pretty awesome. The Topsy and Bopsy episode felt like something right out of Jordan Peele's playbook. She was also really good in Loki. Coogler and Goransson are long time friends and collaborators. It's really cool how Coogler has his core group that he makes films with.

May 11May 11 Saw it tonight and liked it a lot. Like everyone keeps saying, the music and the cinematography are really top notch. It was definitely much more vampire-ish than I went in expecting. Wife was pissed because she knew nothing about it and horror’s not her thing. Hailee looks great. And yeah, surprising amount of cunnilingus for a vampire movie.
May 14May 14 Did I miss some extra cunnilingus or something? What was the surprising amount? I saw it in Laser, who knows what that is. The aesthetic was incredibly beautiful. Seeing Black folk look like that is a mood. Reminds me of Insecure, and how we'd watch an entire episode and just be happy at how it looked. Whoever said this was a musical is correct, because the music is the star, followed by the history and the horror part comes a distant third or fourth. It's actually not that impressive, but as a vehicle for the greater story, it does the job. Happy for Coogler, hope he can keep his streak up. Also thought this was the best I've seen Michael B Jordan act. This movie fit him well.
May 14May 14 The piercing the veil scene was I think what people were saying was the surprise since it definitely added a new element to the story. Or people just couldn't handle Hailee Steinfeld talking about him burying his face in her cooz and f'ing her so hard. I went ahead and bought the pre-order for this on Ultra 4K HD. I hope the IMAX aspect ratios are included. Sinners will pass 300 million worldwide very soon. Already over 218 million domestically. It should make a ton this week being back in IMAX theaters.
