June 25Jun 25 It's 2 hours of a family drama and 10 mins of zombie action. That's why it's become a love it or hate it movie. I think a lot of the "hate it" crowd forgets that 28 Days Later was 80 mins of human drama and 10 mins of zombie action.
June 25Jun 25 next day I think I like it even more. it is definitely an odd movie. if you go in craving a basic story with zombies and a bit of death you may be disappointed. keep an open mind to plot and also to the filmmaking aspect; boyle takes some chances. the ralph fiennes character was especially great. that storyline was so creepy and strange while also, maybe, the most human aspect of the movie. so yeah definitely weird but I loved it. curious if anyone else ends up feeling the same. I wouldn’t say I loved it but I agree with this take in general. There were a couple of things I didn’t like (including the tonal whiplash at the very end), but there was some really cool/fun shit. The chase at night was especially awesome. But yeah, it is a very strange movie.
June 25Jun 25 I liked it as well viewing it solely on its own terms and look forward to the sequels. However, I think the one thing working against it is its affiliation with the other two 28 movies. It doesn't feel at all to me like those movies and I would have prefered to have watched it as solely the first in a new set of zombie/infected stories.
June 25Jun 25 yeah I was disappointed that the end of 28 weeks, with the infected taking over paris, was buttoned up with a brief prologue stating that the virus had been eradicated from mainland europe. really? how? no way in hell that happens.
June 26Jun 26 My unpopular opinion is that, while 28 Days is no doubt considered the better movie, I find 28 Weeks to be the more rewatchable movie

I haven't seen it since it came out. At the time, I favored '28 Days' over 'Weeks' because it just didn't have the same je-ne-sais-quoi of "reality" that the first had. I did a rewatch of 'Days' recently and plan to do the same with 'Weeks' soon before going off to see 'Years.' Looks like it's available on Hulu.
June 26Jun 26 We watched the first two movies in the week leading up to seeing this one over the weekend. The tone of this one is different, pretty sad. The kid actor did a good job. Ralph Fiennes was great too.

I love where they took the story and don’t begrudge tonal changes that might seem discordant, particularly from Boyle/Garland (who pretty much do something akin to this on every one of their collaborations).
June 29Jun 29 WTF did I just watch? The last 3 mins threw me the fuck off. And why did none of the zombies look like the “rage” zombies from the first 2?

June 30Jun 30 I left thinking it was a pretty weird movie. I watched a YT review of the movie (after the fact) that explained some of the symbolism of the movie that he eluded me and I came to realize it was actually a deeper movie than I had given it credit for. There’s still shit that makes no sense to me. Spoiler 1. The mom didn’t have the guts to tell her son she likely had cancer but she was suddenly OK with being euthanized? Even thought she still had the strength to trek across fields and fight off a zombie… 2. How did the doctor survive years without the zombies getting him? The kid was on the mainland for a day and a half and had already been attacked a half dozen times. 3. In every encounter with zombies, the kid survived because someone else stepped in and saved his ass. But at the end he chooses to stay with the zombies instead of going home. 4. So many more….

There were several times during the movie that I wondered if they filmed it with decades old lenses because the aberration or distortion gave it a certain period correct look.
July 7Jul 7 Rewatched 28 Days Later over the weekend and it doesn’t hold up super well. The lo-fi video is tough to watch on a 4K screen. I think what made it novel was the “fast zombies” which we had never seen before. The cast and acting is pretty good. Gonna rewatch 28 Weeks as well.
July 7Jul 7 It also restarted the whole Zombie genre. There hadn't been anything, at least mainstream, since the 70's. I didn't see it when it came out, only watched it a few weeks ago. Agree the lo-fi was a bit tough, but still enjoyed it. I neither love nor hate 28 years later. I was ok with the heavy human drama aspect, but the more out there stuff the director did (which I know is his style) and the tone shift at the end, didn't sit well with me.

The Zach Snyder Dawn of the Dead is excellent. When he dials back the Snyderisms, he's a great director.

October 14Oct 14 Finally got around to watching this one on Netflix and the one word that came to mind to describe it was… beautiful? Step outside of the zombie world and the story of Spike risking it all to save his Mom and then learning to gracefully say goodbye when he couldn’t save her was so well done. As far as quarantined Britain goes, I find it hard to believe that the rest of the world wouldn’t air drop some comms gear and medicine in to the areas where there are known survivor communities. Minor quibbles with that logic but a very solid entry in the zombie genre, which I admit to being partial towards.
