Stupid people in NJ look up at the night sky for the first time, believe every moving light is a drone

Tonight a moderately dim dinner guest brought it up out of the blue.  I was remarkably cool-headed (for me) and refrained from calling her an idiot, but I couldn't avoid a little debunking.  I don't think I convinced her, but another guest was laughing out loud so the whole discussion sort of wilted on the vine.  People, the worst.

Please send up a few A-10s with mini guns blazing, maybe some of the morons standing outside and spreading BS will get the cure and the rest will take the hint.

For the record, the GAU-8 30mm autocannon is not a minigun.  Similar concept, but different.

Alternately, the “aliens” will really be demons pretending to be aliens to carry out the same scam. This has strong potential to be the new QAnon.

I've actually heard this before, my freshman year one of those campus crusaders types shared this theory with me.

The only reason the conversation sticks out was because of the aliens are actually demons theory, which sounded crazy. Fortunately, the conversation ended quickly when I said as a Methodist I subscribe to historicism and he looked at me like I was the one talking about aliens and demons.

We really need to hit these people with the night-time drone show equivalent of this.

No fly (NOTAM) issued for air space over Picatinny base in Jersey.  11/25 through 12/26.  Ends the day after Christmas.  Not sure if this is Santa Claus related or not.  I think the best guess about the drones is they're ours, and it's either a drill, or it's not.   I just don't think so many huge, winged drones are being piloted by civilians in a concentrated space for weeks on end.

Foolish mistake because I know better.  Saw my first A-10 fly at a show in the late 70s and have been fascinated with them ever since.

It's hard for me to take that Joe guy seriously unless he's wearing Oakleys and recording from his truck.

Yea. Here is the flightaware path - it was Cory81. Landed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River 7:18 minutes after taking off from the air base in Tulsa.

I’m the red dot. Definitely some type of training exercise - this plane was around while the drones were overhead. You could hear the hum - flying at 700’ for a good chunk of time.

Joe Rogan isn't worried. He wants dumbasses to be worried and tune into whatever episode of the Joe Rogan Experience he brings on some dipshit to talk about this.  The road goes on forever and the grift never ends....

Just so happens Tugg came out with a video covering the best and worst conspiracy theories yesterday.  I can’t stand him yet I had to listen.  Then I forwarded it to my conspiracy-minded relatives.  He does get all sciency at times.

And already covered. Someone's going to kill Santa and the reindeer when they mistake him for alien drones.

Also aren't politicians in NJ bitching about this from both sides?

Am I wrong about that?

So the head of Homeland Security is confirming people are seeing drones. This isn’t a surprise to me. They are around. And he reminds everyone that the rules for flying them have changed.

I don’t understand why posters in this thread are calling all people idiots. Some people are seeing drones, and there is a concern about whether there is something going on. Why is that wrong? Is it because some idiots are claiming aliens or foreign adversaries? Sure, but that doesn’t mean that every drone sighting is fake and/or automatically harmless.

No, we are calling people idiots who take blurry videos of airplanes, helicopters, stars, and planets and call them a drone invasion. Mayorkas said pretty clearly that there are over 8,000 normal and legal drone flights per day using recreational and commercial systems.  People are going to see those, and sometimes they will even stray into military or commercial airspace.  He went on to say “we are not seeing anything unusual.”

The narrative of a mysterious drone invasion in New Jersey is stupid and now people are flashing lasers at manned aircraft.

I haven’t been following this as it’s in fucking New Jersey but… With such vague government answers that added to speculation rather than deescalation concerns, I think that it is more than household drones. Not foreign though, and probably not testing, but possibly surveillance looking for something. I was at Brushy Creek a month ago where homeland security was looking for a 12 yr old Indian boy using drones. However the drones that they used were small and looked like the recreational hobby ones.

While I agree the federal communication has not been awesome, they have been seriously hamstrung by irresponsible local authorities and a truly stupid situation.  They train and practice all the time to effectively communicate good information during a real emergency.  But over a set of perfectly normal December days, half of the eastern seaboard woke up and asked the feds to explain why everyone was freaking out over nothing.

So yeah the first step was to act in good faith and dispatch some people to see if there WAS anything to flip out over. And in the interim issue a few “we are looking into it, but no cause for alarm statements.  And now people are hearing directly that there’s nothing unusual so calm tf down, but they’ve had a stream of UFO kooks and grotesquely irresponsible sheriffs and mayors assuring them that they have every right to freak out until the negative is definitively proven.

Followed by the “if somebody flashes their headlights at you that means they are going to shoot you so you better shoot them first!” craze.
