Yeah but did any of those losers have almost 40,000 pos rep points on an college-themed message board?

Little known factoid: every astronaut who walked on the moon was an former Eagle Scout.

FIFY.

I shared this fact with all the new Boy Scouts when I was an Assistant Scoutmaster. I also told them Charles Whitman was an Eagle Scout.

The more important thing is what you do with it.

My former business partner was an Eagle Scout. I thought about that when he told me, "I know we have a contract, and I know we owe you money, but we're not going to pay you anymore. If you don't like it, sue us."

I did. I won, they lost. They paid me my money, late. I froze their back account. That was kind of a big deal for an energy trading company.

I encouraged my scouts, and their parents, to complete their Eagle Scout requirements when they were older. Most young teenagers who grow up in affluent areas have little concept of service to others.

RIP, Jim Lovell.

As I have heard it said to a number of scouts, “Don’t be a Life for life.”

It’s tough to get them to finish their Eagle requirements once the fumes hit:

My oldest brother is an Eagle Scout - He attained that rank at the age of 13. (Had over 100 merit badges).

I didn’t make it past my Cub Scout Wolf badge after we moved back Stateside in 1954.

Mom was our Den Mother at Fort Brooke in Puerto Rico. I’m 4th from left:

For a moment I thought you meant this guy, and all I could think was who assassinated him this time.

Seems that they did whatever the could to get as far away from the Scouts as possible. How many were Catholic altar boys?

Yeah, if there's a heaven, Dobson probably shouldn't be allowed in.

My dad was the Scoutmaster and my mother was my Den Mother. I was in the Cub Scouts; got kicked out for eating a Brownie. Just kidding!

If we stayed in Florida, my brother would have earned his Eagle Scout rank. We moved to Austin in '66, he got a guitar, and rest is history.

Bergstrom did not have the parental involvement that Eglin had. Too many short cycle dads were sent to Vietnam, and Austin, TX was a lot different than Valparaiso, FL.

I always tell my Eagle Scouts or soon-to-be Eagle Scouts that plenty of people achieve Eagle but never really live up to its ideals, while others who never set foot in scouting carry those same values through grit, upbringing, or just their own choices. The rank works more like a magnifying glass—it emphasizes and enlarges the character of the Scout, rather than magically bestowing character to the Scout.

He also called for the death penalty for anyone dealing drugs, but when his son was busted transporting hundreds of pounds of weed, he cried like a bitch and begged for leniency.

And of course, he himself was an actual convicted crook who took millions in bribes while he was a congressman.

Meh.  Glad he could fly an F-4 really well.  Otherwise, he was a giant piece of shit.

My high school buddy was finishing his eagle scout stuff before we graduated. I'm not gonna say he hated it, but he was so over it by the time he was done. His older brother was an eagle scout as well, I think there was some pressure from his mom to get it done. He never spoke about his scout stuff unless it was to bitch about something he had to do for his eagle program. After the ceremony, he never talked about scout shit ever again.

I bet it was on resumes he sent out at some point, and probably on his college application.

I got my Eagle as a freshman in high school.  My parents didn't usually have to issue ultimatums/ae, but it was pretty clear to me that my only way out of Scouts was to get my Eagle.  I didn't hate it, but felt dorky about it and it did absorb some time that I wanted more to myself.  Also, part of advancement in my troop was acting as an assistant patrol leader and patrol leader, which was considerable work and responsibility.

Even so, I stuck around for a year after getting my eagle on "staff," which meant general supervision of patrols, patrol leaders, etc. and was more fun, because you basically just had to handle your own shit and not anyone elses.  I also did the national Jamboree, which took place after my year as patrol leader and earning eagle.  I thought I'd be on staff there, too, making it more fun.  Instead, I miscalculated and they wanted experienced patrol leaders, so I had to fucking revert.  In the BSA footage from the 1983 National Jamboree, I can be seen slugging one of my more annoying patrol members in the stomach as we "marched" to some assembly.  Not real proud of that, but everyone, including the victim agreed he deserved it for being a pain in the ass.
